Download or read book Maxed Out written by James D. Scurlock and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2007-03-06 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Foreclosures are hitting record highs; Americans are declaring bankruptcy at rates ten times that during the great Depression; more college students drop out because of debts than due to poor grades; reports of debtor suicides proliferate in the media. In other words, it's a great time to be in the banking business. Maxed Out takes us on a road trip that is sometimes hysterical and often horrifying: from Las Vegas to the Bible Belt, from the backwoods to inner cities, where the world's largest financial giants troll for their next victims. Welcome to a country populated by debt pirates, corporate predators, human credit card billboards, debt evangelists, megamillion-dollar spec homes, and, of course, trillions of dollars of easy credit. Combining startling facts with even more startling examinations of individuals, institutions, the government, and modern religion, James Scurlock separates the myths (there is "good debt" and "bad debt") from the harsh reality (corporations partner with colleges to target today's youth; credit reports are riddled with errors that will never be fixed; and death, for many of those in trouble, is the only way out). At a time when the financial industry posts ever-higher profits even as its clients drown in the flood of easy credit, Scurlock exposes very real, potentially disastrous systems and policies that are consuming millions of Americans. Maxed Out takes readers on a wickedly smart and entertaining tour of what one interviewee calls "the last taboo."

Book No One Ever Drowned in Sweat G R I T The Stuff of Leaders and Champions

Download or read book No One Ever Drowned in Sweat G R I T The Stuff of Leaders and Champions written by Scott Petinga and published by . This book was released on 2017-10 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Life is full of resistance seeking to sink your dreams. It takes hard work plus a daily dose of G.R.I.T. to overcome this resistance and reach your goals. G.R.I.T. stands for Guts, Resilience, Initiative and Tenacity which Scott Petinga, Chief Troublemaker at The Scott Petinga Group, says are the foundational ingredients necessary to get the journey started, keep momentum going, effectively handle hurdles along the way, and stick with the task until the destination is reached. Scott knows about adversity . . . and failure. He flunked out of school, was kicked out of the Marines, has been fired from jobs, went through a divorce and is suffering through one of the greatest tests of all . . . being diagnosed with cancer. In spite of the harsh setbacks, Scott has used G.R.I.T. to get back up after being knocked down and forge ahead toward the fulfillment of his dreams. In No One Ever Drowned in Sweat, Scott breaks down each trait of G.R.I.T. and how to successfully use them to reach goals. Besides sharing his own experiences, Scott adds words of wisdom from interviews of over 50 notable CEO's, entrepreneurs, non-profit heads, thought leaders athletes, everyday heroes, academics and forward thinkers from all walks of life. You'll learn how these traits are the driving force that makes things happen, even if you don't have a formal education. As a matter of fact, Scott explains how it is the elements of G.R.I.T. that are needed to restore the business world which has grown basically weak and unproductive because corporate heads have valued those with educational parchments and alphabetical titles over those with the characteristics of G.R.I.T.

Book Russian English Dictionary of Proverbs and Sayings

Download or read book Russian English Dictionary of Proverbs and Sayings written by Alexander Margulis and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2015-08-13 with total page 495 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This dictionary contains 2,375 Russian sayings and proverbs and their English counterparts. Variants of each saying are included, and careful attention is given to the differences in British and American versions. For example, the Russian saying that is interpreted as “Children behave in a childish way, and they cannot be expected to act like grown-up people,” is first given in Russian (in the Cyrillic alphabet) and then in English, and is then followed by the nearest English-language equivalent sayings in Britain and the United States: “Young colts will canter” (British) and “Boys will be boys” (American). The proverbs and sayings are arranged alphabetically by the first Russian word (in the Cyrillic alphabet) and are cross-referenced so the reader can find analogous Russian versions of English sayings. There is a keyword index for each language (one in English, one in Russian in the Cyrillic alphabet), which allows the reader to find a proverb or a saying without knowing the first word. Proverbs and sayings are current and include those popular in both spoken Russian and literature. The prefatory matter is in both English and Russian, for readers who have a command of either language.

Book Literary Theories of Uncertainty

Download or read book Literary Theories of Uncertainty written by Mette Leonard Hoeg and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2021-08-26 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As the first study to examine the concept of uncertainty of meaning as it relates to modern and contemporary literature and literary theory, Literary Theories of Uncertainty demonstrates how this notion functions as a literary feature, narrative device and theoretical concept in 20th and 21st-century texts. Calling upon theories of interpretation and challenging the distinction between literature and theory, this exploration is broken down into three sections: Poststructuralist legacies of uncertainty; life-writing and uncertainty; and contemporary literary uncertainties. The volume takes into account related terms such as undecidability, indeterminacy, ambiguity, unreadability, and obscurity, and the topics examined include: undecidability and the motif of suspension in deconstruction; Derrida and Bataille; poetry as a mode of critical discourse and point of convergence between logico-mathematical ideas of undecidability and literary forms of uncertainty; uncertainty in relation to speech and the impact of Robert Antelme on Mascolo and Blanchot; Proust and temporal uncertainty; uncertainty in relation to death, trauma and autobiography; moral uncertainty in the Scandinavian welfare state and Nordic Noir; the aesthetically disruptive and anti-authorian effect of uncertainty in in the works of German-Turkish writer Emine Sevgi Ozdamar; uncertainty in the form of 'the double' and in relation to meta-fiction; and many more. Literary Theories of Uncertainty collates original and diverse discussions by some of the most prominent, inquiring minds in literary, cultural and critical theory today to map out the contours of the field of 'theory of uncertainty'.

Book God The Woman And Their Enemy

Download or read book God The Woman And Their Enemy written by Joseph Brice and published by BCMG. This book was released on 2021-12-04 with total page 229 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the beginning, has the Woman really been misunderstood? The truth of the matter is, she was targeted by her enemy from the start. This enemy was aware of who she was and is, but unfortunately, she did not have a clue as to her own majestic power. He purposely took advantage of Adam's inability to recognize this treasure from heaven, his inexperience in protecting such a gift and of course, Eve's naivety. The fallen angel from heaven on the other hand has unprecedented knowledge and experience. His relocation brings a difficult reality check; he is in need of a fix and has discovered how much he is addicted to, "Glory" and not so much to God! He knows that Adam is anointed, he’s a son, created by the glory of God, but in himself does not fully acknowledge the glory that he's grown so accustomed to having at his disposal...so his new enemy waits. The man is in a deep sleep. Something is taken out of him; it is a vessel, and it reminds the fallen angel of something he saw while falling from heaven. It is that creation! "God's Masterpiece" from heaven! But why was it hidden inside of the man? The fallen angel is now in need of a vessel to use, that he may get close enough to the woman and get acquainted. The fallen one is in need of a creature synonymous with his nature, so he chooses the "Serpent!" His focus is now the woman because he knows that she is the glory of God down here on earth, he can feel it! This message is to all women of every race; no matter the religion, economic or social status in this world, you have a true enemy, simply because you are his replacement from heaven and is the greatest revelation of the "Glory of God." "God, the Woman, & Their Enemy" will open your eyes to the truth and act as a spiritual "DNA Test", revealing to you of who you truly are and who is your real Father. God is Love and Life and there is no hate nor is there death in Him...

Book Churches of Christ in Oklahoma

Download or read book Churches of Christ in Oklahoma written by W. David Baird and published by University of Oklahoma Press. This book was released on 2020-01-23 with total page 398 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the 1950s and 1960s, Churches of Christ were the fastest growing religious organization in the United States. The churches flourished especially in southern and western states, including Oklahoma. In this compelling history, historian W. David Baird examines the key characteristics, individuals, and debates that have shaped the Churches of Christ in Oklahoma from the early nineteenth century to the beginning of the twenty-first century. Baird’s narrative begins with an account of the Stone-Campbell movement, which emerged along the American frontier in the early 1800s. Representatives of this movement in Oklahoma first came as missionaries to American Indians, mainly to the Cherokees, Chickasaws, and Choctaws. Baird highlights the role of two prominent missionaries during this period, and he next describes a second generation of missionaries who came along during the era of the Twin Territories, prior to statehood. In 1906, as a result of disagreements regarding faith and practice, followers of the Stone-Campbell Movement divided into two organizations: Churches of Christ and Disciples of Christ. Baird then focuses solely on Churches of Christ in Oklahoma, all the while keeping a broader national context in view. Drawing on extensive research, Baird delves into theological and political debates and explores the role of the Churches of Christ during the two world wars. As Churches of Christ grew in number and size throughout the country during the mid-twentieth century, controversy loomed. Oklahoma’s Churches of Christ argued over everything from Sunday schools and the support of orphan’s homes to worship elements, gender roles in the church, and biblical interpretation. And nobody could agree on why church membership began to decline in the 1970s, despite exciting new community outreach efforts. This history by an accomplished scholar provides solid background and new insight into the question of whether Churches of Christ locally and nationally will be able to reverse course and rebuild their membership in the twenty-first century.

Book Socrates at Verse and Other Philosophical Poems

Download or read book Socrates at Verse and Other Philosophical Poems written by Christopher Norris and published by Parlor Press LLC. This book was released on 2020-03-07 with total page 217 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These poems by a well-known philosopher and literary theorist take a lead from Plato’s intriguing account of how Socrates turned to composing verse during his last few days despite having famously denounced its corrupting moral, social and political effects. Writing as a convinced formalist, Christopher Norris deploys a range of meters, stanza-forms and rhyme-schemes by way of exploring how the discipline of verse might relate to that of philosophical enquiry as practiced across the ages. Some of his poems have to do with individual thinkers, such as Berkeley, Hume, Kant, Schopenhauer, Kierkegaard, Nietzsche, Wittgenstein, Adorno, and Derrida. Others are concerned with wider debates like those around the nature of time, the status of mathematical truths, the enduring puzzles of quantum mechanics, Kurt Gödel’s Undecidability Theorem, the mind/body problem, the ontology of art, the nature of rules, and the role of luck in matters of moral judgment. Others again are philosophical in the non-specialist sense of confronting often-asked questions about love, memory, identity, character, social roles, choice, evolution, and animal sentience.
