Book No Day Without a Line

Download or read book No Day Without a Line written by I︠U︡riĭ Karlovich Olesha and published by Northwestern University Press. This book was released on 1998 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "First published in 1965 and reprinted many times in the Soviet Union and Russia, Yury Olesha's No Day without a Line is a series of thematically assembled journal entries which together form an unusual and extremely engaging personal memoir." "Ranging from Olesha's prerevolutionary childhood, to notable cultural figures, to Russian and Western literature, the entries are artfully composed units in which an image is developed, a memory precisely delineated, or an apercu elaborated. Occasionally, the units coalesce in a chain of reflections on a common theme, such as Olesha's memories of the 1905 Potyomkin mutiny, his recollections of the poet Mayakovsky, or his discussion of the writings of Tolstoy or Hemingway." --Book Jacket.

Book No Day Without a Line

Book excerpt: "The only thing I have ever truly called my own are the set of unique letterforms fashioned by my hand, mind and heart. They have provided delight, furstration insight and a lasting supply of play toys. A child in a grown up's body, imbuing letters and designs with as much humor as possible. Serving these 26 soldiers is all I have wanted to do since I fell in Love with the Pen and its ability to landscape a page. The 26 letters are truly the flora of my own personal garden. Because I do not use traditional methods, or tools, to achieve certain results; so I have included a "key" in this book as to what I have used to execute the pieces with: [Red-lettering] Tools: PP, Pointed Pen, Speedball A; SB. Speedball B; FP. Fountain Pen; and finally the CE- Chisel Edge, Speedbal Elegant Writer, Mitchell or Sonnecken. One thing you can be sure of is that there was a 3 x 0 rapidograph employed in the final touch-up in the preparation of the these pieces for print. [Back to black lettering] To Rick Cusick and Michael Podesta whose work will alwasy represpets thoughtful and incisive calligraphic design."--

Book Introduction

Download or read book Introduction written by Fridtjof Nansen and published by . This book was released on 1897 with total page 660 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In September of 1893, Norwegian zoologist Fridtjof Nansen and a crew manned the schooner Fram, intending to drift, frozen in the Arctic pack-ice, to the North Pole. When it became clear that they would miss the pole, Nansen and his companion Hjalmar Johansen struck off by themselves. Racing the shrinking pack-ice, they attempted, by dog-sled, to go "farthest north." They survived a winter in a moss hut eating walruses and polar bears, and the public assumed they were dead. In the spring of 1896, after three years of trekking, and having made it to within four degrees of the pole, they returned to safety. Nansen's narrative stands with the best writing on polar exploration.

Book The Southern Version of Cursor Mundi Vol I Lines 1 9228

Download or read book The Southern Version of Cursor Mundi Vol I Lines 1 9228 written by Sarah M. Horrall and published by University of Ottawa Press. This book was released on 1978 with total page 431 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The medieval poem Cursor Mundi is a biblical verse account of the history of the world, offering a chronological overview of salvation history from Creation to Doomsday. Originating in northern England around the year 1300, the poem was frequently copied in the north before appearing in a southern version in substantially altered form. Although it is a storehouse of popular medieval biblical lore and a fascinating study in the eclectic use of more than a dozen sources, the poem has until now attracted little scholarly attention. This five-part collaborative edition presents the Arundel version of the poem with variants from three others. In addition, it provides a discussion of sources and analogues, detailed explanatory notes, and a bibliography. Published in English.
