Download or read book The Blood Spilt written by Asa Larsson and published by Delacorte Press. This book was released on 2007-01-30 with total page 354 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It’s midsummer in Sweden—when the light lingers through dawn and a long, isolating winter finally comes to an end. In this magical time, a brutal killer has chosen to strike. A female priest—who made enemies and acolytes in equal number—has been found hanging in her church. And a big-city lawyer quite acquainted with death enters the scene as police and parishioners try to pick up the pieces.... Not long ago, attorney Rebecka Martinsson had to kill three men in order to stop an eerily similar murder spree—one that also involved a priest. Now she is back in Kiruna, the region of her birth, while a determined policewoman gnaws on the case and people who loved or loathed the victim mourn or revel in her demise. The further Rebecka is drawn into the mystery—a mystery that will soon take another victim—the more the dead woman’s world clutches her: a world of hurt and healing, sin and sexuality, and, above all, of sacrifice. In prose that is both lyrical and visceral, Åsa Larsson has crafted a novel of pure entertainment, a taut, atmospheric mystery that will hold you in thrall until the last, unforgettable page is turned

The year is 1956, and the Axis powers of the Third Reich and Imperial Japan rule. To commemorate their Great Victory, they host the Axis Tour: an annual motorcycle race across their conjoined continents. The prize? The resistance has given Yael one goal: Win the race and kill Hitler. A survivor of painful human experimentation, Yael has the power to skinshift and must complete her mission by impersonating last year's only female racer, Adele Wolfe. This deception becomes more difficult when Felix, Adele's twin brother, and Luka, her former love interest, enter the race and watch Yael's every move. But as Yael grows closer to the other competitors, can she be as ruthless as she needs to be to avoid discovery and stay true to her mission?

Book Every Drop of Blood

Download or read book Every Drop of Blood written by Edward Achorn and published by Atlantic Monthly Press. This book was released on 2020-03-03 with total page 490 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This vividly rendered Civil War history presents “a lively guided tour of Washington during the 24 hours or so around Lincoln’s swearing-in” (Adam Goodheart, Washington Post). By March 4, 1865, the Civil War had left intractable wounds on the nation. Tens of thousands crowded Washington’s Capitol grounds that day to see Abraham Lincoln take the oath for a second term—and witness what was perhaps the greatest inaugural address in American history. Lincoln stunned the nation by arguing that both sides had been wrong, and that the war’s unimaginable horrors might have been God’s just verdict on the national sin of slavery. In Every Drop of Blood, Edward Achorn reveals the nation’s capital on that momentous day—with its mud, sewage, and saloons, its prostitutes, spies, reporters, social-climbing spouses and power-hungry politicians. Swirling around the complex figure of Lincoln, a host of characters are brought to life, from grievously wounded Union colonel Selden Connor to the embarrassingly drunk new vice president, Andrew Johnson, to poet-journalist Walt Whitman; from soldiers’ advocate Clara Barton and African American leader Frederick Douglass to conflicted actor John Wilkes Booth. In indelible scenes, Achorn captures the frenzy and division in the nation’s capital at this crucial moment in America’s history. His story offers new understanding of our great national crisis, and echoes down the decades to resonate in our own time.

Book By Man Shall His Blood Be Shed

Download or read book By Man Shall His Blood Be Shed written by Edward Feser and published by Ignatius Press. This book was released on 2017-05-10 with total page 426 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Catholic Church has in recent decades been associated with political efforts to eliminate the death penalty. It was not always so. This timely work reviews and explains the Catholic Tradition regarding the death penalty, demonstrating that it is not inherently evil and that it can be reserved as a just form of punishment in certain cases. Drawing upon a wealth of philosophical, scriptural, theological, and social scientific arguments, the authors explain the perennial teaching of the Church that capital punishment can in principle be legitimate—not only to protect society from immediate physical danger, but also to administer retributive justice and to deter capital crimes. The authors also show how some recent statements of Church leaders in opposition to the death penalty are prudential judgments rather than dogma. They reaffirm that Catholics may, in good conscience, disagree about the application of the death penalty. Some arguments against the death penalty falsely suggest that there has been a rupture in the Church's traditional teaching and thereby inadvertently cast doubt on the reliability of the Magisterium. Yet, as the authors demonstrate, the Church's traditional teaching is a safeguard to society, because the just use of the death penalty can be used to protect the lives of the innocent, inculcate a horror of murder, and affirm the dignity of human beings as free and rational creatures who must be held responsible for their actions. By Man Shall His Blood Be Shed challenges contemporary Catholics to engage with Scripture, Tradition, natural law, and the actual social scientific evidence in order to undertake a thoughtful analysis of the current debate about the death penalty.

Book excerpt: Carlos The past has a way of always following you and whenever he's involved, I never mind. Isaiah has called on me for help before, but the new favor he asks of me is one I never expected to receive. His beloved husband has been taken and he needs help tracking him down. One good quality I've always had was the ability to find people. I should say no and turn my head. Except the word no was never in my vocabulary when it came to the man I've been secretly in love with for the last ten years. Once my job is completed, will I be able to walk away this time? Isaiah As much as I've been looking for an excuse to call on my old friend, this wasn't it. My life has had its ups and down but I'm finally at the point where I thought I had everything. Or at least, I did until the other piece of my heart was taken away from me and every good thing in my life was threatened. There's only ever been one other person besides Joey I could always trust, and he's never completely left my mind or heart all the years later. As much as I hate putting another person I care about in harm's way, I know he's my only hope. Joey One minute I'm safe in the arms of the man I love, and the next I wake up in the back of a dark van half naked. Out of all the things I feared in the past, being sold to the highest bidder wasn't one of them but here I am and I won't make it to any auction without a fight. I never was one to need rescuing, but Isaiah was never one to leave me fighting alone either. The man he sends is nothing I've expected him to be. What starts off as pretending for the sake of surviving, turns into something else. I'm not sure I can let him go once this is all over. ***Sold Blood is an MMM gritty romance and some things may be triggering for some readers. All books in the Cartel Wars series must be read in order. This story is a continuation about the couple from Cold Blooded
