  • Pages : 273 pages

Download or read book Fewer Better Things written by Glenn Adamson and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2018-08-07 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the former director of the Museum of Arts and Design in New York, a timely and passionate case for the role of the well-designed object in the digital age. Curator and scholar Glenn Adamson opens Fewer, Better Things by contrasting his beloved childhood teddy bear to the smartphones and digital tablets children have today. He laments that many children and adults are losing touch with the material objects that have nurtured human development for thousands of years. The objects are still here, but we seem to care less and know less about them. In his presentations to groups, he often asks an audience member what he or she knows about the chair the person is sitting in. Few people know much more than whether it's made of wood, plastic, or metal. If we know little about how things are made, it's hard to remain connected to the world around us. Fewer, Better Things explores the history of craft in its many forms, explaining how raw materials, tools, design, and technique come together to produce beauty and utility in handmade or manufactured items. Whether describing the implements used in a traditional Japanese tea ceremony, the use of woodworking tools, or the use of new fabrication technologies, Adamson writes expertly and lovingly about the aesthetics of objects, and the care and attention that goes into producing them. Reading this wise and elegant book is a truly transformative experience.

She’s slowly working her way back to good health and has even signed up for a challenging open water swim, but something’s still missing - there’s no spark, no excitement, and she’s a little lonely. One day one of her clients tells Lily and a group of fellow students about an autopsy that was accidentally performed on the wrong body at the hospital where she works. She was hoping to send the body to the funeral home as quickly as possible, but when the medical examiner’s report is complete, it states that death was due to homicide! Lily (along with the clients who were present that day) is intrigued and can’t help doing a little investigating. The murkiness of the woman’s death sparks the very type of passion and interest she has been yearning to feel. A second murder, and a blossoming friendship among the group as they bond over discussions about motive and suspects, move the action along. The symbology of the Eye of Horus, the name of Lily’s studio, weaves throughout this tale, inviting the reader to explore deeper metaphysical concepts within the construct of an amateur detective story. Set against the idyllic backdrop of Washington, DC and the Potomac River, Sleuth of Bears is an engrossing and entertaining mystery.

Book The Untold Story of the Teddy Bear

Download or read book The Untold Story of the Teddy Bear written by Patricia Thorne and published by Dog Ear Publishing. This book was released on 2012-09-01 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Untold Story of the Teddy Bear solves a mystery in the history of the Teddy Bear. When the Steiff Company of Giengen, Germany created what we know as the classic Teddy Bear in the fall of 1902, the first to be made of mohair with movable arms and legs, no one would buy it. After being presented to toy buyers in the United States and Europe, no one was interested, partly due to its cost, size, and weight. Then along came a toy buyer, in the spring of 1903, who saw it on display at the Leipzig Spring Fair in Germany, and bought 3,000. According to the Steiff Company, they have no document that reveals the buyer's name. The only record they have is the amount of the sale, though they know he was an American representing an American company. Having financial troubles at the time, Margarete's small shop of handmade toys was about to be taken over by its creditors, so it was this sale of the little bears that saved the company. Not having that many toy bears on hand to fill such a huge order, however, many townspeople were enlisted to help so that the shipment would arrive at its destination in time for Christmas. As revealed in The Untold Story of the Teddy Bear, the first true history of the Teddy Bear, the author's grandfather was the American buyer, representing Carson Pirie Scott & Co. of Chicago, who placed that first large order of Steiff's new toy bear and gave it the name "Teddy," now referred to as the "Teddy" bear. The author tells the dramatic story of her grandfather's life and the difficulties he had to overcome, before becoming a successful international buyer, and the remarkable story of Margarete Steiff, founder of her little company of handmade toys. The text also documents the history of the now famous toy bear, in advertisements and editorials, from the time it arrived in the United States in 1903 to its sudden rise in popularity by 1907. Included is the story of the revival of handmade Teddy Bears after World War II, with colorful photographs that illustrate the work of today's talented, award-winning artists. With this book, the author ties together the people, dramatic events, and circumstances that resulted in the establishment of the world's most beloved toy and what these endearing bears have come to mean to children and adults all over the world.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: His mother's neck broke while he vaguely watched . . . The ocean that was once a blanket for the village, smothered the village and killed her sister . . . And both wind up in a school that seemingly has the motto "From savage to civilized." Hotah Often getting pneumonias and being conceived by rape, Hotah lived in a Hopi village with his great-grandmother deep in her nineties but said, "The hell with a walking stick." His whole life, he had seen war sprout, such as witnessing his grandmother's brutal death and severed body parts thrown to the railroad. But most of that had not given him troubled thoughts. It was mostly his mother's hanging, perhaps, because he had to help carry her dead body back home. As an eighty-one-year-old man, Hotah recaptures his time at both home and the St. Mary's Indian Mission School he was sent to shortly after his mother's dismiss. Traumatized at the school, his memories play to him over and over again while meeting his first crush and someone he shares an unlikely bond with. Kai Kai was the only Hawaiian at the Indian Mission School, as there were no records of Hawaiian children being sent to these schools. Kai was taken with a few other villagers to a refugee camp after the tsunami but very faintly remembered how she arrived at the school. Orphaned at birth, Kai was raised by her much-older sister Haunani but lost Haunani to the storm. As a woman, she speaks of her memories at home and the mission school, which involved meeting a person whose face she never forgot.
