Book excerpt: Kent Dobson climbed Mount Sinai in search of the God who had eluded him. Instead he got bitten by a camel. Dobson was climbing the ladder of Christianity, too: a worship leader, teacher, and ultimately senior pastor of one of the largest and most prominent churches in America. But he was growing disillusioned with the faith, at least inside the shell of organized religion. One Sunday morning, he preached to his congregation, ÒI donÕt know what the word God even means anymore.Ó He soon left the church, but his quest for God became more intense than ever. In Bitten by a Camel, Dobson deconstructs much of what passes as Christianity, but on the foundation of Jesus and the Bible, he reconstructs a faith that is fulfilling, life-giving, and trueÑtrue to himself and true to God. DobsonÕs message is funny, poignant, and winsome. And it is ultimately, like the message of Jesus himself, hopeful.

Book The David Story A Translation with Commentary of 1 and 2 Samuel

Download or read book The David Story A Translation with Commentary of 1 and 2 Samuel written by Robert Alter and published by W. W. Norton & Company. This book was released on 2009-10-21 with total page 452 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "A masterpiece of contemporary Bible translation and commentary."—Los Angeles Times Book Review, Best Books of 1999 Acclaimed for its masterful new translation and insightful commentary, The David Story is a fresh, vivid rendition of one of the great works in Western literature. Robert Alter's brilliant translation gives us David, the beautiful, musical hero who slays Goliath and, through his struggles with Saul, advances to the kingship of Israel. But this David is also fully human: an ambitious, calculating man who navigates his life's course with a flawed moral vision. The consequences for him, his family, and his nation are tragic and bloody. Historical personage and full-blooded imagining, David is the creation of a literary artist comparable to the Shakespeare of the history plays.

Book The Death of the Messiah and the Birth of the New Covenant

Download or read book The Death of the Messiah and the Birth of the New Covenant written by Michael J. Gorman and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2014-06-27 with total page 354 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this groundbreaking book, Michael Gorman asks why there is no theory or model of the atonement called the "new-covenant" model, since this understanding of the atonement is likely the earliest in the Christian tradition, going back to Jesus himself. Gorman argues that most models of the atonement over-emphasize the penultimate purposes of Jesus' death and the "mechanics" of the atonement, rather than its ultimate purpose: to create a transformed, Spirit-filled people of God. The New Testament's various atonement metaphors are part of a remarkably coherent picture of Jesus' death as that which brings about the new covenant (and thus the new community) promised by the prophets, which is also the covenant of peace. Gorman therefore proposes a new model of the atonement that is really not new at all--the new-covenant model. He argues that this is not merely an ancient model in need of rediscovery, but also a more comprehensive, integrated, participatory, communal, and missional model than any of the major models in the tradition. Life in this new covenant, Gorman argues, is a life of communal and individual participation in Jesus' faithful, loving, peacemaking death. Written for both academics and church leaders, this book will challenge all who read it to re-think and re-articulate the meaning of Christ's death for us.

Book excerpt: Return to the Bible as it was before chapters and verses. The Bible isn’t a single book. it'sa collection of many books that were written, preserved and gathered together so that they could be shared with new generations of readers. The Bible is an invitation to you to first view the world in a new way, and then to become an agent of the world’s renewal. The Books of the Bible, NIV helps you have a more meaningful encounter with the sacred writings and to read with more understanding, so that you can take your place more readily within this story of new creation. This is a revolutionary new presentation of the NIV Scripture that strips away centuries of artificial formatting, leaving behind nothing but pure Bible text. The result is a Bible unlike any other available today — and more like the original Scriptures: specially designed to be read from start to finish. “There is no Bible more suited to reading from beginning to end.” — Scot McKnight, author of Jesus Creed Features: Specifically, this edition of the Bible differs from the most common current format in several significant ways: • Chapter and verse numbers have been removed from the text • The books are presented instead according to the internal divisions that we believe their authors have indicated • A single-column setting is used to present the text more clearly and naturally, and to avoid disrupting the intended line breaks in poetry • Footnotes, section headings and any other additional materials have been removed from the pages of the sacred text • Individual books that later tradition divided into two or more parts are put back together again • The books are arranged in an order that helps you understand the Bible more completely.
