Book Interaction of Nitrilotriacetic Acid with Suspended and Bottom Material

Download or read book Interaction of Nitrilotriacetic Acid with Suspended and Bottom Material written by John Keenan Taylor and published by . This book was released on 1971 with total page 44 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An experimental investigation was made of the possible interaction of residual concentrations of nitrilotriacetic acid (NTA) in surface waters with metallic elements contained in sediments and bottom materials. Samples of bottom materials from typical bodies of surface waters were analyzed for their major, minor, and tract constituents. Eight representative samples of these were equilibrated with distilled water and with water containing 20 ppm of NTA and the resulting solutions were analyzed by three analytical techniques. Elements showing essentially no increase solubility in the presence of NTA were: barium, antimony, molybdenum, strontium, chromium, silver, tin, iron, lead, cadmium, copper, and mercury. Elements showing small increases in solubility were: nickel, zinc, manganese, and cobalt. Calcium and magnesium concentrations were increased somewhat above their normal relatively high concentrations.

Book Gardner s Commercially Important Chemicals

Download or read book Gardner s Commercially Important Chemicals written by G. W. A. Milne and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2005-09-02 with total page 1205 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An exhaustive resource for the industrial chemical community Through eleven editions, Gardner's Chemical Synonyms and Trade Names has become the best-known and most widely used source of information on chemicals in commerce. This companion book reflects the continuing research underlying Gardner's and presents a major expansion of the information provided for individual chemical compounds. Gardner's Commercially Important Chemicals: Synonyms, Trade Names, and Properties: * Contains 4,174 chemical entries and information such as structure, molecular formula, and chemical name * Includes synonyms for each chemical, including other identifiers, chemical names, trade names, and trivial names, in English and other languages * Provides chemical properties of the compounds, information concerning known uses of the chemical and biological data-in particular, acute toxicity in various species, where available * Lists the companies that manufacture or supply the listed chemicals * Describes bulk inorganic chemicals, major pesticides (herbicides, insecticides, antifungal agents, etc.), and many dyestuffs, surfactants, and metals, along with the most commonly used drugs * Contains indexes by chemical name and synonym, Chemical Abstracts Service (CAS) Registry Numbers, and EINECS (European Inventory of Existing Commercial Substances) numbers One useful feature of this database is the inclusion of physical properties and use data for pure chemicals. Properties that have been provided, when available, include: the melting point, boiling point, density or specific gravity, optical rotation, ultraviolet absorption, solubility, and acute toxicity. The major uses of most of the chemicals are indicated and, where appropriate, regulatory information is also provided.

Book Biotechnology for the Environment Strategy and Fundamentals

Download or read book Biotechnology for the Environment Strategy and Fundamentals written by Spiros Agathos and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 237 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At the dawn of the 21st century, biotechnology is emerging as a key enabling technology for sustainable environmental protection and stewardship. Biotechnology for the Environment: Strategy and Fundamentals captures the dynamism of environmental biotechnology as it addresses the molecular functioning of microorganisms as cleanup agents, their communal interactions in natural and polluted ecosystems, and the foundations of practical bioremediation processes. Chapters on biological pollution control in the chemical industry, biodegradation of persistent molecules (halogenated compounds, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, polychlorinated biphenyls, pesticides, detergents, etc.), microbial diversity with impact on global change, bioaugmentation strategies, and sensors for ecotoxicological monitoring, will be of value to environmental scientists, engineers, and decision-makers involved in the development, evaluation, or implementation of biological treatment systems. For information on Soil Remediation, see Focus on Biotechnology volume 3B, and for information on Waste Water and Waste Gas Handling, see Focus on Biotechnology volume 3C.

Book Biochemistry of microbial degradation

Download or read book Biochemistry of microbial degradation written by Colin Ratledge and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 598 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Life on the planet depends on microbial activity. The recycling of carbon, nitrogen, sulphur, oxygen, phosphate and all the other elements that constitute living matter are continuously in flux: microorganisms participate in key steps in these processes and without them life would cease within a few short years. The comparatively recent advent of man-made chemicals has now challenged the environment: where degradation does not occur, accumulation must perforce take place. Surprisingly though, even the most recalcitrant of molecules are gradually broken down and very few materials are truly impervious to microbial attack. Microorganisms, by their rapid growth rates, have the most rapid turn-over of their DNA of all living cells. Consequently they can evolve altered genes and therefore produce novel enzymes for handling "foreign" compounds - the xenobiotics - in a manner not seen with such effect in other organisms. Evolution, with the production of micro-organisms able to degrade molecules hitherto intractable to breakdown, is therefore a continuing event. Now, through the agency of genetic manipulation, it is possible to accelerate this process of natural evolution in a very directed manner. The time-scale before a new microorganism emerges that can utilize a recalcitrant molecule has now been considerably shortened by the application of well-understood genetic principles into microbiology. However, before these principles can be successfully used, it is essential that we understand the mechanism by which molecules are degraded, otherwise we shall not know where best to direct these efforts.

Book Food Factors for Cancer Prevention

Download or read book Food Factors for Cancer Prevention written by Hajime Ohigashi and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-27 with total page 661 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Chemoprevention is currently regarded as one of the most promising avenues for the control of cancer, with human epidemiological and animal studies indicating that the risk of cancer may be modified by changes in diet. Over 100 papers are collected in this volume, the proceedings of the International Conference on Food Factors: Chemistry and Cancer Prevention, held in Hamamatsu, Japan, in December 1995. Special emphasis is placed on chemical, biological, and molecular properties of phytochemicals in teas, fruit, vegetables, herbs, and spices, and on their potential for cancer prevention. Also discussed are the cancer-preventive effects of vitamins, lipids, carotenoids, flavonoids, and other components of diet. The findings presented here will be invaluable to all who are interested in diet and cancer prevention, and especially to biochemists, pharmacologists, food scientists, and nutritionists.
