Book excerpt: A thirteen-year-old girl in Depression-era Louisiana grapples with her mother moving to Chicago, her father remarrying, and finding where she belongs. Ever since Nissa Bergen’s father Ivar remarried, Nissa has felt like a stranger in her own home, clinging to her memories of her free-spirited mother, Heirah Rae, who moved to Chicago to escape the conformity of small-town Louisiana. To make matters worse, Nissa’s not ready for the physical changes that are happening to her. So when Heirah asks Nissa to stay with her for a while, Nissa decides it’s time for a change. But Heirah’s life in Chicago painting sets for a theater is overwhelming to Nissa, and she misses her home and father in Harper. Slowly, Nissa realizes that she has to stop living for her mother and start living for herself. Ivar and Lara’s visit convinces her that home is in Harper. And after a revelation in the Chicago library, Nissa discovers a way for her to stake her independence and find her place in her family and her life. Told with the lyricism that marked The Year of the Sawdust Man, Nissa’s Place is a beautiful continuation of Nissa’s story and a remarkable book on its own. Once you meet Nissa Bergen, you’ll never forget her. Praise for Nissa’s Place “Honeyed and colorful.” —Booklist “LaFaye surpasses the lyricism and emotional depth of her sparkling debut, The Year of the Sawdust Man, in this sequel. . . . Readers will be moved as Nissa comes to view Heirah Rae’s flight as an act of courage and a spur for Nissa to make her own dream of a library in Harper come true.” —Publishers Weekly, Starred Review

Book excerpt: LaFaye surpasses the lyricism and emotional depth of her sparkling debut, The Year of the Sawdust Man, in this sequel. It's been two years since Nissa's mother, Heirah Rae, left the family and Depression-era Harper, La., for a new life in Chicago. Nissa, now 13, believes she must preserve her mother's presence in the household. When Heirah Rae calls home to announce her birthday gift to Nissa, a trip to Chicago, she upsets the tenuous relationship between Nissa, her father, Ivar, and her stepmother, Lara. Still feeling abandoned but hungry for time with her mother, Nissa decides to travel back to Chicago with Heirah Rae, who shows up on their doorstep. During her stay in Chicago, Nissa notes how her mother has blossomed away from Harper's nosy scandalmongers. LaFaye achieves just the right balance between Nissa's introspection and the adventures she has with her mother. The intricate prose mirrors the fragile complexity of Nissa's feelings about returning to Harper: ""My heart shrunk a little as the train pulled away, but I knew I'd made the right choice. I could feel it like a warm blanket on a cold nightAa tight, satisfied feeling deep down inside strong enough to carry me home."" Readers will be moved as Nissa comes to view Heirah Rae's flight as an act of courage and a spur for Nissa to make her own dream of a library in Harper come true is most successful when he mixes his different approaches into the original sort of magic realism he creates in the title tale, which concerns an erotically charged encounter between a virginal Irish au pair, Nula, and a Moroccan student, Henri Tatahouine, in Paris. The hallucinatory quality of Henri's account of his life leaves Nula emotionally blistered, as though she had been in the Sahara. The comic, horrifying """"Cats in Space,"""" which tells the tale of a group of kids who use helium balloons to launch a kitten into the air, is similarly effective. Though uneven, Kalfus's collection is ambitious and daring, with smart, fluid prose and an abundance of surprises.

Book excerpt: In Shift, Carlos Ghosn, the brilliant, audacious, and widely admired CEO of Nissan, recounts how he took the reins of the nearly bankrupt Japanese automotive company and achieved one of the most remarkable turnarounds in automotive—and corporate—history. When Carlos Ghosn (pronounced like “phone”) was named COO of Nissan in 1999, the company was running out of gas and careening toward bankruptcy. Eighteen short months later, Nissan was back in the black, and within several more years it had become the most profitable large automobile company in the world. In SHIFT, Ghosn describes how he went about accomplishing the seemingly impossible, transforming Nissan once again into a powerful global automotive manufacturer. The Brazilian-born, French-educated son of Lebanese parents, Ghosn first learned the management principles and practices that would shape his decisions at Nissan while rising through the ranks at Michelin and Renault. Upon his arrival at Nissan, Ghosn began his new position by embarking on a three-month intensive examination of every aspect of the business. By October 1999 he was ready to announce his strategy to turn the company around with the Nissan Revival Plan. In the plan, he consistently challenged the tradition-bound thinking and practices of Japanese business when they inhibited Nissan’s effectiveness. Ghosn closed plants, laid off workers, broke up long-standing supply networks, and sold off marginal assets to focus on the company’s core business. But slashing costs was just the first step in Nissan’s recovery. In fact, Ghosn introduced changes in every corner of the company, from manufacturing and engineering to marketing and sales. He updated Nissan’s car and truck lineup, took risks on dynamic new designs, and demanded improvements in quality—strategies that quickly burnished Nissan’s image in the marketplace, and re-established the company in the minds of consumers as a leader in innovation and engineering. Like the best-selling memoirs of Jack Welch, Lou Gerstner, and Larry Bossidy, SHIFT is a fascinating behind-the-scenes look at what it takes to transform and re-create a world-class company. Written by one of the world’s most successful and acclaimed CEOs, SHIFT is an invaluable guide for business readers everywhere.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 240Z was a landmark in automotive history. By the time the first generation Z-cars came to an end in 1978, everyone around the world knew the name Datsun. Here is the full story of the ZX series from the 280ZX – introduced as the second generation Z-car in 1978 – through to the 300ZX of 1999. The 240Z and 260Z were pure sports cars, but the 280ZX represented the evolution of the Z-car into a Grand Tourer. This evolution continued through two generations of 300ZX and the Z became a true supercar with state-of-the-art engineering features. This book contains a great deal of new information for enthusiasts in the West, as Japanese models have been covered in detail for the first time. Photographs and other illustrations have been sourced almost exclusively from the factory and therefore illustrate the cars in original detail. Datsun Z, also by Brian Long and Veloce, is a complementary book.
