Nischal and his brother Sabin were captured as snow leopards and have been kept medicated and half starved, put on display for crowds to view. The drugs that are supposed to keep the snow leopards docile also, as Nischal and Sabin discover, prevent them from shifting. After years of captivity, Nischal struggles to retain any kind of hope for freedom. He watches his brother die a little more on the inside every day. Then one afternoon, a freckled red-headed man stands out from the crowd. Nischal doesn't understand why, especially in his drug-addled state. When that man's life is threatened, Nischal finds a strength within himself he never knew existed. Preston Hardy's brother went missing over a year ago. The local cops were no help, Preston's parents didn't seem to give a damn, and Preston was left to try to discover what had happened to Paul on his own. His research leads him to a skeezy travelling show, run by a man who immediately sets off warning bells in Preston's head. When he sets out to follow the man, he doesn't have a clue that his whole life and perception of the world is about to change. And that is only the beginning of Nischal and Preston's adventures as they try to find the truth about what happened to Paul and evade those who would capture the snow leopards again.

Book Metrolingualism

Download or read book Metrolingualism written by Alastair Pennycook and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-03-05 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is about language and the city. Pennycook and Otsuji introduce the notion of ‘metrolingualism’, showing how language and the city are deeply involved in a perpetual exchange between people, history, migration, architecture, urban landscapes and linguistic resources. Cities and languages are in constant change, as new speakers with new repertoires come into contact as a result of globalization and the increased mobility of people and languages. Metrolingualism sheds light on the ordinariness of linguistic diversity as people go about their daily lives, getting things done, eating and drinking, buying and selling, talking and joking, drawing on whatever linguistic resources are available. Engaging with current debates about multilingualism, and developing a new way of thinking about language, the authors explore language within a number of contemporary urban situations, including cafés, restaurants, shops, streets, construction sites and other places of work, in two diverse cities, Sydney and Tokyo. This is an invaluable look at how people of different backgrounds get by linguistically. Metrolingualism: Language in the city will be of special interest to advanced undergraduate/postgraduate students and researchers of sociolinguistics and applied linguistics.

He requested his granddaughter Rupa not to make any arrangements for the celebration of his birthday. Without bothering with his protestations, Rupa made the arrangements for the celebration of his birthday and made it a success. Sundar felt so much happy when his friend Somaraj a 96 years old man came to his home to stay with him for few days. But the way he was treated by his sons and daughter in laws was always a sorrowful thing not only to Somaraj but to Sundar also. When Sundar could manage to join Somaraj in Nischal Old-age Home which was indeed a happy home for the old people to stay, both Sundar and Somaraj felt so much happier. ‘Nischal’ the owner and founder of Nishcal Old-age Home, even he was just forty six years aged guy, quite knowledgeable and understandable about old people and their problems. There are many old people staying in his old age home and all of them were quite happy to stay there because of the facilities that Nischal provided for them in that old age home. They equally enjoy the lectures that Nischal would give in the evenings in that old age home. ‘Dusk’ is the story of old people, about their thinking, about their psychology, about their problems and in fact it is heart beat of old people.

Book Critical Perspectives on Linguistic Fixity and Fluidity

Download or read book Critical Perspectives on Linguistic Fixity and Fluidity written by Jürgen Jaspers and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-01-15 with total page 275 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume offers a critical perspective on current views on linguistic fixity and fluidity in sociolinguistics and highlights empirical accounts alternative to prevailing trends in the field. Featuring accounts from a broad range of regional contexts, the collection takes stock of such terms as "polylingualism", "metrolingualism" and "translanguaging" to question perceptions around multilingual and monolingual language use. The book critiques the status of fluid language use as a more "natural" language practice and in turn, its greater potential for corresponding social transformation, demonstrating the value of linguistic fixity and the continuous debate between fixity and fluidity in multilingual speakers' lives. In providing these accounts, the book seeks not to advocate for linguistic fixity or fluidity, but to argue that sociolinguists pay close attention to the way both types of linguistic practice open up or close down avenues for social transformation. This collection is a key reading for graduate students and scholars in sociolinguistics, multilingualism, and linguistic anthropology.
