Book Re imagining the High School Experience

Download or read book Re imagining the High School Experience written by Renato M. Lajara and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page 75 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this study is to investigate one of the new High School reform initiatives introduced by the School District of Philadelphia (SDP) entitled Supporting the Ninth Grade Transition. The study will analyze the effectiveness of this initiative and inform the wider circle of educators about its impact, specifically related to students’ attendance, credit acquisition, and discipline interventions. Four of the twenty-six comprehensive high schools in SDP were chosen to participate in a pilot program and were provided with additional funds and resources to implement a ninth grade academy. The researcher gathered information on the implementation of the ninth grade academy in order to gain insight into the effectiveness of this innovative program, and to identify components of the program that can be replicated with fidelity in other comprehensive high schools. This information will allow the school district to make a decision on whether to expand their resources to other comprehensive high schools or refine the current resources it has implemented in the first four schools. This quantitative study collected data from the School District of Philadelphia, specifically three out of the four high schools involved in the ninth grade transition academy. The researcher analyzed data for three different metrics - attendance, credit accumulation and suspensions - to determine the initial impact of the ninth grade academy.

Download or read book The Make or Break Year written by Emily Krone Phillips and published by The New Press. This book was released on 2019-01-08 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Washington Post Bestseller An entirely fresh approach to ending the high school dropout crisis is revealed in this groundbreaking chronicle of unprecedented transformation in a city notorious for its "failing schools" In eighth grade, Eric thought he was going places. But by his second semester of freshman year at Hancock High, his D's in Environmental Science and French, plus an F in Mr. Castillo's Honors Algebra class, might have suggested otherwise. Research shows that students with more than one semester F during their freshman year are very unlikely to graduate. If Eric had attended Hancock—or any number of Chicago's public high schools—just a decade earlier, chances are good he would have dropped out. Instead, Hancock's new way of responding to failing grades, missed homework, and other red flags made it possible for Eric to get back on track. The Make-or-Break Year is the largely untold story of how a simple idea—that reorganizing schools to get students through the treacherous transitions of freshman year greatly increases the odds of those students graduating—changed the course of two Chicago high schools, an entire school system, and thousands of lives. Marshaling groundbreaking research on the teenage brain, peer relationships, and academic performance, journalist turned communications expert Emily Krone Phillips details the emergence of Freshman OnTrack, a program-cum-movement that is translating knowledge into action—and revolutionizing how teachers grade, mete out discipline, and provide social, emotional, and academic support to their students. This vivid description of real change in a faulty system will captivate anyone who cares about improving our nation's schools; it will inspire educators and families to reimagine their relationships with students like Eric, and others whose stories affirm the pivotal nature of ninth grade for all young people. In a moment of relentless focus on what doesn't work in education and the public sphere, Phillips's dramatic account examines what does.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: High school academics have become high-stakes as more occupations require post-secondary education. Research suggests special education students are at a disadvantage during ninth grade year and have higher failure rates than regular education students. Several unmet ninth grade transition needs specific to special education students have been identified. Special education failures may be reduced by implementing ninth grade transition systems to provide adequate class options/selection, lesson modification/accommodation, resource support, and Individual Education Program (IEP) or 504 plan transitions. The result of implementing special education high school transition systems on special education student failures during ninth grade in a suburban mid-western high school is reported and discussed.

Book Evaluating the Impacts of Structures Relationships and Programming on Ninth grade Transition

Download or read book Evaluating the Impacts of Structures Relationships and Programming on Ninth grade Transition written by Katilin Marie Levesque and published by . This book was released on 2021 with total page 412 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ninth-grade transition has been an area of interest for many. This is due to the immediate and long-term ramifications that students incur as a result of a proper transition to high school, or lack thereof. While considering the importance of the transition, there are several elements that contribute to positive academic outcomes. For the purpose of this study, the characteristics being considered, were structures, relationships, and programs. Structures includes elements such as the district organization, the building systems and policies, and the daily operations. When discussing relationships, this includes the emphasis that is placed on positive interactions between stakeholders. This includes rapport between students and their peers, parents, staff, and community members. It also encompasses relationships between teachers and their colleagues, as well as their affiliations and involvement with parents and community members. Finally, programs were investigated. This includes preparations at the middle school level, programming that is available at the high school level, and finally, structures that are supportive of the transition at the high school level. This study collected participant information through an electronic survey and was designed to investigate the perceptions of ninth-grade staff members regarding the influence that these three elements have on ninth-grade students. The sample of 47 participants includes administrators, support staff, and teachers who work directly with ninth-grade students. I conducted independent t-tests and one-way ANOVAs to determine statistically significant differences in participant responses participants while considering for demographics. There were three key takeaways from this study regarding factors which positively influence the transition to high school. These elements include creating a developmentally responsive environment for ninth-grade students to develop critical skills for high school success, without penalty or repercussions. This also includes an emphasis on relationships with stakeholders, with the goal of collectively supporting incoming high school students. Finally, the importance of collaborating among stakeholders emerged as a critical element to supporting these relationships, ensuring all stakeholders understood how and when to support their shared ninth-grade students.

Book Evaluation of a Ninth Grade Transition Program For At Risk Students

Download or read book Evaluation of a Ninth Grade Transition Program For At Risk Students written by and published by . This book was released on 2004 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Researchers have identified the transition from middle to high school as a critical point in teenagersâ educational development. Despite sweeping educational reforms, many students are leaving high school without graduating. Local school districts are struggling to redesign high schools to provide the educational programs necessary for at-risk studentsâ success. Creating smaller learning communities and developing transition programs have shown success in addressing these problems. Sustained research shows promise in minimizing the effects of the transition process and adds to the body of knowledge. A case study approach using archival data was used to explore the differences in three Bearcat âPRIDEâ treatment groups and their 8th (pre-treatment) and 9th (post-treatment) grade measures. Results of this study suggested students who participated in the Bearcat âPRIDEâ program showed greater success in academic performance, reduced disciplinary actions, increased school attendance, and participation in extra-curricular activities of their 8th (pre-treatment) and 9th (post-treatment) grade measures.
