Book Managing Imitation Strategies

Download or read book Managing Imitation Strategies written by Steven P. Schnaars and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2002-04-29 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pioneers -- those innovative "first movers" who enter markets before competitors - are often deified as engines of economic growth while imitators are generally scorned as copycats and shameful followers. But who most often wins? Drawing on seven years of research, Steven Schnaars documents that, in sharp contrast to conventional beliefs, imitators commonly surpass pioneers as market leaders and attain the greatest financial rewards. How do they do it? In this ground-breaking book -- the first to formulate imitation strategies for managers -- Schnaars systematically examines 28 detailed case histories, from light beer to commercial jet liners, in which imitators such as Anheuser-Busch and Boeing prevailed over pioneers. He describes the marketing wars, court battles, and even personal vendettas that often resulted, and shows that imitators have several clear advantages. Pioneers are forced to spend heavily on both product and market development. They also risk making costly mistakes. Pioneers often aid in their own destruction, thrown into confusion by rapid growth, internal bickering, and the neverending search for expansion capital. Moreover, imitators do not have to risk expensive start-up costs or pursuing a market that does not exist, enabling them to quickly outmaneuver pioneers once the market is finally shaped. By patiently waiting on the sidelines while the innovator makes the mistakes, imitatorscan also usurp benefits from the test of time -- major defects in the product having been removed by the pioneer at an earlier stage in the game. Schnaars discusses the three basic strategies that successful imitators such as Microsoft, American Express, and Pepsi have used to dominate markets pioneered by others. First, some imitators sell lower-priced, generic versions of the pioneer's product once it becomes popular, as Bic did with ballpoint pens. Second, some firms imitate and improve upon the pioneer's product; for example, WordPerfect in the case of word processing software. Third, building on their capital, distribution, and marketing advantages that smaller pioneers cannot hope to match, imitators use the most prevalent strategy of all -- bullying their way into a pioneer's market on sheer power. In several cases a one-two-punch, or combination of strategies, is often utilized by the imitator to remove any doubt regarding their dominance in the market and in the eyes of the public. Schnaars concludes that the benefits of pioneering have been oversold, and that imitation compels recognition as a legitimate marketing strategy. It should be as much a part of a company's strategic arsenal as strategies for innovation.

Introduction Nintendo, the Japanese video game console manufacturing company, is one of the big players in the respective industry along with Sony and Microsoft. In 2006, when the competitors were following the industry norm to improve the product features, Nintendo followed a disruptive route to target a new market with a new product that none of the competitors had: the Wii. The following report strives to present a comprehensive strategic analysis of Nintendo for the executive board. Beginning with an analysis of Nintendo's current strategy, the report evaluates the strategy in terms of its fit with the environment. Finally, the report presents some recommendations and implementation issues that the board needs to consider while making its decision. 2. Strategy Analysis The strategic analysis of Nintendo has been conducted at the corporate level along with the Blue Ocean Strategy that played a key role in the formulation of its disruptive strategy. 2.1 Corporate Level Strategy At the corporate level, Nintendo is following an Innovation Strategy that has played an important role in building its competitive advantage. Figure 1 shows an analysis of Nintendo's innovation strategy through the framework of the Innovation Dilemma (Johnson et al., 2008). The analysis of Nintendo's innovation strategy indicates that it used an innovative business model i.e. to position itself completely different from its competitors andquestioned how people actually want to play through its in depth customer understanding (Pontiskoski and Asakawa, 2009). Secondly, Nintendo used a technological push i.e. to target an untapped or incomplete market of gamers, as it had to convince the non-gamer adult to play on a Nintendo platform. Book Nintendo Magic Winning the Videogame Wars

Download or read book Nintendo Magic Winning the Videogame Wars written by Osamu Inoue and published by Vertical Inc. This book was released on 2022-01-18 with total page 231 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Back in the 80s, Nintendo ruled the home-entertainment market with the NES (Nintendo Entertainment System). But then rival Sony introduced PlayStation, which featured advancements and cutting-edge technology that put Nintendo's Super-NES to shame. Nintendo quickly lost its dominant market share to Sony and found itself floundering. In 2006, Nintendo released Wii at the same time Sony introduced its highly-anticipated and much-vaunted PlayStation III and Microsoft's XBox 360. Wii's David defeated PlayStation's Goliath, inversely echoing the SNES/PlayStation outcome of a decade previous. Nintendo Magic: Winning the Videogame Wars is the story of what went right, discussing the business strategies and marketing savvy that took on the mighty Sony and won. Topics include: How where you put your company is just as important as how you run it: being in Kyoto From work force to policies, why Nintendo's "just enough" attitude succeeds Why the ability to read a balance sheet is overrated Respect seniority but approve huge R&D budgets for talented junior employees Allowing maximum communication between disparate divisions (hardware and software) Enlarging the pie: going after casual gamers (The art of mainstreaming) How the Wii will be the next major household appliance and the DSi will be the cell phone of the future. Nintendo Magic: Winning the Videogame Wars should serve as a warning to similar powerhouse industries never to understimate the modest competitor. It should occupy the bookshelf of any business person smart enough to know they don't need to be a giant to win.

Book Nintendo Strategic Analysis Paper

Download or read book Nintendo Strategic Analysis Paper written by Jessica Phillips and published by GRIN Verlag. This book was released on 2020-11-16 with total page 17 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Essay from the year 2020 in the subject Business economics - Business Management, Corporate Governance, grade: 96, , language: English, abstract: Nintendo Corporation was established on September 23rd of 1889 by Fusajiro Yamauchi in Kyoto Japan. The company originally sold hand painted Hanafuda playing cards under the name Nintendo Koppai. Their success in the playing card industry led to them to try other ventures such as ramen noodles, taxi services, short-term “love” hotels and lastly video games. In 1940 Fusajiro Yamauchi died and nine years later his great grandson Hiroshi Yamauchi took over the company at the age of 22. For the next 50 years he led Nintendo to become the video game giant it is. In 1985 Nintendo released the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) their first home console. In 1989 they released the Gameboy their first handheld device. Though neither item was the first of its kind they still were wildly popular and pushed Nintendo to create newer and better games and consoles. (Gebel, 2019) Nintendo’s Mission and Vision statement today is lacking. The company is known for their creativity and innovation, but their mission statement is void of that. “Nintendo of America's Corporate Mission and Philosophy: At Nintendo we are proud to be working for the leading company in our industry. We are strongly committed to producing and marketing the best products and support services available. We believe it is essential not only to provide products of the highest quality, but to treat every customer with attention, consideration, and respect. By listening closely to our customers, we constantly improve our products and services. We feel an equal commitment toward our employees. We want to maintain an atmosphere in which talented individuals can work together as a team. Commitment and enthusiasm are crucial to the high quality of our products and support services. We believe in treating our employees with the same consideration and respect that we, as a company, show our customers.” (Nintendo, 2020)

Book Strategic Management and Drivers of Success

Download or read book Strategic Management and Drivers of Success written by Surja Datta and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2024-08-22 with total page 181 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Strategy is essentially about achieving organisational success. Growth, Adaptation, Resilience, and Competition (GARC) is a general framework that helps organisations think creatively about attaining success and acknowledges the reality that there is no one single criteria for success. What drives and defines organisational success? Using the path- breaking GARC framework, this book provides an answer to this important question. Combining practice with theory, the reversal of the conventional ‘theory with practice’ idea being intentional, one of the standout features of this book is that it articulates business heuristics for each of the drivers of success along with guidelines on how to use them. To illustrate the empirical grounding of the theoretical aims, the authors connect multiple real- life business cases to each of the four GARC dimensions. This book will therefore be of value to researchers, academics, practitioners, and advanced students in the fields of strategy, organisational studies, and management.
