Book excerpt: Excerpt from Ninety-Six Sermons, Vol. 3: By the Right Honourable and Reverend Father in God The present volume contains nineteen Discourses; the remainder of those preached on Easter-day, on our Lord's Resurrection, and the whole series preached on Whit-Sunday, on the Sending of the Holy Ghost. Of those on the Resurrection, the first four were preached before King James I. at Whitehall, between the years 1620 and 1623, both inclusive; and the last was only prepared for delivery on Easter-day 1624, but was never actually preached. With respect to the subject-matter of these Sermons little need be said. The first three are occupied with a consideration of the great love and devotion displayed by St. Mary Magdalene, at the tomb of her Divine Master; together with a particular examination of the probable grounds which induced our blessed Saviour to repress her ardent zeal, and through her to inculcate upon us the necessity of spiritualizing our affections, and at the same time of reposing with implicit confidence upon Him, Who is at once our Father and our God. The two last discourses in this series, from different texts, enforce the same practical lesson, namely, the obligation which is laid upon every Christian of making a suitable and correspondent return for the great blessings of salvation. First, Bryan attempts to determine what kind of text Mark would have been seen to be, both by its author and by others who encountered it near the time of its writing. He examines whether Mark should be seen as an example of any particular literary type, and if so which. He concludes that a comparison of Mark with other texts of the period leads inevitably to the conclusion that Mark's contemporaries would broadly have characterized his work as a "life." Second, Bryan looks at the evidence that exists to indicate whether Mark, like so much else of its period, was written to be read aloud. He points out ways in which Mark's narrative would have worked particularly well as rhetoric. The first examination of Mark as a whole in the light of contemporary studies of orality and oral transmission, A Preface to Mark not only shows us Mark in its original setting, but also suggests ways in which our own encounter with Mark's text may be significantly enriched. Its accessible style will serve as a good introduction to the Gospel for students as well as the general reader.

The text has been carefully reprinted from the second edition published in 1631, and it has throughout been collated with the editions of 1641 and 1661; but with the exception of a few verbal inaccuracies and obvious misprints, which have been corrected, it has not been deemed advisable, or indeed found necessary, to make the slightest alteration either in the style or in the arrangement of the author. Much labour has been bestowed upon the marginal references to Scripture, many of which were found on examination to be exceedingly erroneous, and it soon became apparent that unless they were revised throughout, the reader would experience no ordinary difficulty in discovering the passages to which he was directed. They have accordingly been submitted to a rigid scrutiny, and the result has been such, that the editor is led to hope but few inaccuracies have escaped his observation. It must however be borne in mind, that in many cases the reference to Scripture is very slight, and almost imperceptible without the aid of the Vulgate, where a word or a phrase appears to have attracted the Bishop's attention, and to have been marked by him more from its allusion, than from its actual relation, to the passage in question. Indeed, one or two instances might be named, where the allusion is so slight as to be scarcely traceable, but even here it has not been thought advisable to remove the reference; it is suffered to remain as it is found without alteration. But besides these, there are other instances, and those not a few, where quotations from Scripture occur without any reference whatever. Here however, in all cases of the least importance, the reader is referred to the sacred author quoted, and whenever this has been done, the reference itself is inclosed in brackets, to shew that for it the present editor is himself responsible. The editor regrets that he has not been equally successful with all the quotations which are given from the Fathers, and other writers. Wherever any reference whatever is given to any part of their works, it has invariably been sought out and verified, but sometimes, where a Father of the Church is merely cited by name, and no particular Treatise is mentioned, it has been found impossible to discover the passage, especially where the quotation is made from such voluminous writers as Augustine and Chrysostom, and the sentiment is such as might have been expressed by a Christian writer of almost any age and country. In all cases however of importance, where the citation is not used merely by way of illustration, but in support of some primitive doctrine or usage, the greatest pains have been taken to find the passage, and in scarcely any instance of this nature has the result been otherwise than successful. It may be added, that when the exact passage quoted cannot with certainty be ascertained, the reader is occasionally referred to a parallel sentiment from the same author, which may perhaps after all have been the passage intended. With respect to the quotations generally, and particularly those from Scripture, it will be found that they are scarcely ever given in the exact words of the author referred to, but that the sense or substance of a passage is for the most part rather quoted from memory, than given with that exactness which is usual in the present day This remark will be found to apply not merely to English, but to Latin and Greek quotations, and it would perhaps be difficult to point out many instances to the contrary.

Book excerpt: Editor's Preface The same plan has been pursued in the present as in the preceding volume, and although, from circumstances which it is unnecessary to explain, the same time has not been occupied in its preparation for the press, equal pains have been taken with a view to attain the greatest possible accuracy. The number of Sermons now published is twenty-two, of which six were preached during Lent, three on Good-Friday, and the remaining thirteen, out of eighteen, the whole series upon the Resurrection, on Easter-day. Of those delivered during Lent, four were preached before Queen Elizabeth at Greenwich, St. James's, and Hampton Court, between the years 1589 and 1594; and the two last were preached before the Court at Richmond and Greenwich on the fifth of March, and the fourth of April, 1596. The topics touched upon in the Lent Sermons are, briefly, the following: That the strength of a land is in its pillars, the worship of God, and the due administration of Justice; That the Most High is to be recognised as the chief Head of every government, to Whom all civil rulers are subordinate; That as our Saviour accepted with favour, and as a good work, the anointing of His natural body by Mary Magdalene, so He will no less graciously accept whatever is done for His body mystical, the Church; That from the lamentable fall of Lot's wife, we learn the necessity of perseverance in the course of well-doing; That from the miserable state of the rich man tormented in Hades, we are taught the necessity of considering what we shall be hereafter; and that from the example of St. Paul, we find that love for souls, if sincere, will not be disheartened, however it may be requited. Such is a general outline of this series of Sermons, and as the temper of the times in which the Bishop lived was not altogether unlike our own, so it will be found that the truths therein evolved are such as may well be appreciated by ourselves. The Sermons upon the Passion are only three in number. The second and third were preached before King James I. at Whitehall and Greenwich, on the sixth of April 1604, and the twenty-ninth of March 1605. The first was preached at the Court on the twenty-fifth of March 1597. They will be found to enter fully, but most reverently, into the subject of our Saviour's unexampled sufferings, both mental and bodily; to investigate the causes and motives which led to the death of the Son of God for us and for our salvation; to point out the inestimable benefits which have resulted to mankind from the propitiation thereby made for the sins of the whole world; and to enforce the necessity of "looking unto Jesus, the Author and Finisher of our faith," for a due sense and reception of the blessings purchased in His blood. Of the thirteen Sermons which are here given on the Resurrection, twelve were preached at Whitehall before King James I. The remaining one, the thirteenth, was also preached before the King at Durham Cathedral, and the whole were delivered during the period commencing with Easter-day 1606, and ending with Easter-day 1618, both inclusive. Book excerpt: Character and the Individual Personality in English Renaissance Drama: Tragedy, History, Tragicomedy studies instantiations of the individualistic character in drama, Shakespearean and non-Shakespearean, and some of the Renaissance ideas allowing for and informing them. Setting aside such fraught questions as the history of Renaissance subjectivity and individualism on the one hand and Shakespearean exceptionalism on the other, we can find that in some plays, by a range of different authors and collaborators, a conception has been evidenced of who a particular person is, and has been used to drive the action. This evidence can take into account a number of internal and external factors that might differentiate a person, and can do so drawing on the intellectual context in a number of ways. Ideas with potential to emphasize the special over the general in envisioning the person might come from training in dialectic (thesis vs hypothesis) or in rhetoric (ethopoeia), from psychological frameworks (casuistry, humor theory, and their interpenetration), or from historiography (exemplarity). But though they depicted what we would call personality only intermittently, and with assumptions different from our own about personhood, dramatists sometimes made a priority of representing the workings of a specific mind: the patterns of thought and feeling that set a person off as that person and define that person singularly rather than categorically. Some individualistic characters can be shown to emerge where we do not expect, such as with Fletcherian personae like Amintor, Arbaces, and Montaigne of The Honest Man’s Fortune; some are drawn by playwrights often uninterested in character, such as Chapman’s Bussy D’Ambois, Jonson’s Cicero, and Ford’s Perkin Warbeck; and some appear in being constructed differently from others by the same author, as when Webster’s Bosola is set in contrast to Flamineo, and Marlowe’s Faustus is set against Barabas. But Shakespearean characters are also examined for the particular manner in which each troubles the categorical and exhibits a personality: Othello, Good Duke Humphrey, and Marc Antony.
