Download or read book Nineteenth Century Artists English and French Classic Reprint written by William Knight and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-10-24 with total page 286 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Nineteenth Century Artists, English and French The following pages contain the Scammon Lectures delivered at Chicago in the spring of 1907, along with one or two addenda inserted, which were promised at the conclusion of the course. It was the lecturer's intention to develop them' into a larger volume, containing a more complete discussion of the subject; but circum stances have prevented the fulfilment of that desire. Some things have been added which were not spoken. Others have been omitted, because they were more suited for an oral address than for a printed book. Much of the discussion is fragmentary, because the lectures were not in tended for advanced scholars or mature art critics, but rather for students who had not pur sued their researches very far. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These paintings - dreams of nature as a web of life in which human beings occupy a peripheral role - overwhelmed Rousseau's contemporaries with their novel light effects, original perspective, and "sheer profusion of visual sensation." While Baudelaire considered them superior to even Corot's works, they baffled art critics and have never fit convincingly into the received categories of naturalism, "pre-Impressionism," or modernism."--Jacket.

Book Catalogue of Valuable Pictures by Masters of the Early English Dutch Flemish and French Schools

Download or read book Catalogue of Valuable Pictures by Masters of the Early English Dutch Flemish and French Schools written by American Art Association and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-12 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Catalogue of Valuable Pictures by Masters of the Early English, Dutch, Flemish, and French Schools: To Be Sold at Unrestricted Public Sale by Order of Mr. J. D. Ichenhauser For it hinges upon a notable gathering of portraits, inter esting as examples of the artists represented and as portraits of historic personages. And if we pursue the analysis still further, we shall find the collection centres round the early art of Eng land, including the work not only of Englishmen, but of those foreigners who were attracted thither, or whose works found favor there while still of small account in their own country; a summary which includes landscapes, as well as portraits. Out side of this main group is a scattering of foreign painters, some few of whom belong to the nineteenth century. This is a fairly just characterization, and certainly a convenient one. Book Handbook of the American Novel of the Nineteenth Century

Download or read book Handbook of the American Novel of the Nineteenth Century written by Christine Gerhardt and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2018-06-11 with total page 584 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This handbook offers students and researchers a compact introduction to the nineteenth-century American novel in the light of current debates, theoretical concepts, and critical methodologies. The volume turns to the nineteenth century as a formative era in American literary history, a time that saw both the rise of the novel as a genre, and the emergence of an independent, confident American culture. A broad range of concise essays by European and American scholars demonstrates how some of America‘s most well-known and influential novels responded to and participated in the radical transformations that characterized American culture between the early republic and the age of imperial expansion. Part I consists of 7 systematic essays on key historical and critical frameworks ― including debates aboutrace and citizenship, transnationalism, environmentalism and print culture, as well as sentimentalism, romance and the gothic, realism and naturalism. Part II provides 22 essays on individual novels, each combining an introduction to relevant cultural contexts with a fresh close reading and the discussion of critical perspectives shaped by literary and cultural theory.

Book Art and the Academy in the Nineteenth Century

Download or read book Art and the Academy in the Nineteenth Century written by Rafael Cardoso Denis and published by Manchester University Press. This book was released on 2000 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Throughout the nineteenth century, academies functioned as the main venues for the teaching, promotion, and display of art. Contemporary scholars have, for the most part, denigrated academic art, calling it formulaic, unoriginal, and repetitious. The contributors to Art and the Academy in the Nineteenth Century challenge this entrenched notion and consider how academies worldwide have represented an important system of artistic preservation and transmission. Their essays eschew easy binaries that have reigned in academia for more than half a century and that simply oppose the avant-garde to academicism.
