Book excerpt: Excerpt from Christianity in the Nineteenth Century From God; the other is at once formal and material, pro A csode from man, and is of the earth. What is achieved through the Spirit may be done by one church, but is the common possession and glory of all the Churches what is performed in the weakness and imperfection of the human conditions is, and remains, the church's own, evidence of the incomplete subordination of the society on earth to the Lord in heaven. The extraordinary thing is, not that the Churches have so often fatally erred and disastrously failed in duty, but that they have been able, in spite of their errors and failures, so far to obey the Christ, and to render so much service to man. Book The Worker and His Church Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Worker and His Church Classic Reprint written by Eric M. North and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-24 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Worker and His Church Every Christian worker is interested in the church. He knows that it is due to the church more than to any other institution that he has come to know and to love Jesus Christ. He knows that the church is constantly working to bring the knowledge and love of God to men and to promote his kingdom throughout the world. He also knows that in it he often finds the very best place in which to do his own work for the advancement of the kingdom. He is himself a member of it. Because he is thus vitally con cerned with the life of the church, this little book has been written to help him to understand how the Christian church came to be and just how it has developed through the nineteen centuries of its history. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of the Reformed Church in the U. S: In the Nineteenth Century While there is much in the controversy that we would gladly have left out, yet we felt that the truth should be told, so that later generations might understand its significance. A controversy is not always pleasant reading, but God overrules it for his glory. Any corrections the author will be glad to place in the second edition, as also any reply to criticisms made on the book. He desires to express his indebtedness and gratefulness to the many friends who have given him information and whom he fears he has often wearied with inquiries in order to find out the facts. He regrets that the already-large size of the book precludes the mentioning of them by name. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book The English Church in the Nineteenth Century Classic Reprint

Download or read book The English Church in the Nineteenth Century Classic Reprint written by Eugene Stock and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-10-18 with total page 138 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The English Church in the Nineteenth Century This little book is an attempt to do, on a very small scale, what has not yet been done, so far as I am aware. It may be that the forthcoming work by Mr. F. Warre Cornish will prove to be the adequate and impartial presentation of the subject which is so much needed. I had hoped to have the great advantage of reading it before sending my ms. To the printers, but it has not appeared in time. Of existing books, the only one in my judgment really satis factory is the late Canon Overton's, which has the same title as my own; but it only covers one - third of the century, 1800 - 1833. Works that include the remaining two-thirds are histories Of the Church from an earlier period, and naturally afford but little Space for later events and episodes; while Of these events and episodes the writers seem to think only three or four worth recording, viz. The Oxford Movement, the Revival of Convo cation, and the Essay: and Reviews and Ritual Controversies. One standard book does treat the period more at length; but its omissions are very strange, as my readers will perceive by referring to the footnote on page 51 Of the present volume. Book A Concise History of the Christian Church From Its First Establishment to the Present Time

Download or read book A Concise History of the Christian Church From Its First Establishment to the Present Time written by Martin Ruter and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-03 with total page 688 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Concise History of the Christian Church, From Its First Establishment to the Present Time: Containing a General View of Missions The rise, progress, establishment, corruption, and reformation of the Church, arc subjects of deep interest to mankind, and especially so to the friends of Christianity. But the voluminous works in which these subjects are exhibited, are to the great mass of community inaccessible. The want of moans to purchase, or of time to read them, has restricted their use to a comparatively small number of readers. Hence the spread of the gospel, and tho condition of the Church in different ages since the establishment of Christianity, are by many very imperfectly understood. The object of this work in its original form, as prepared by Dr. Gregory, was to furnish a comprehertsive abridgment of ecclesiastical history; and thus to place this important branch of knowledge within the reach of multitudes that could not obtain it from larger works. In revising and preparing it in its present form, the same object has been kept in view. The work might have been swelled to a size much beyond its present limits; but a general history of the Church in a small compass was deemed preferable, especially in view of the use that may be made of it by the young and rising generation. The history by Dr. Gregory does not extend to the close of the last century. Although this is compiled principally from that, it is extended to the present time; has numerous additions and improvements, and is enriched with a view of missions, and other subjects of moral enterprise, exhibiting the present condition and prospects of the Christian world. In this compendious form it is offered to the public, with the hope that it may be found, in some degree, useful in advancing the great interests of the Redeemer's kingdom. This book was released on 2018-01-20 with total page 182 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Christ's Kingdom and Church in the Nineteenth Century Church World. Leaving over for a time the consideration of the last named, What, we may ask, are the data furnished by the New Testament for enabling us to discriminate between these terms? What is the meaning, and what the precise relation to each other, of the things or ideas signified by the terms in question Let the familiar facts be rapidly summarised once more. Christ's favourite expression is Kingdom. In the Gospels it occurs some hundred and twelve times, and for the most part as Christ's own word. Sometimes He speaks simply of My Kingdom, but more frequently we have the fuller 'expression, Kingdom of God or Kingdom of Heaven. The latter form is peculiar to Matthew. Book The Bible in the Nineteenth Century Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Bible in the Nineteenth Century Classic Reprint written by J. Estlin Carpenter and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-05-03 with total page 532 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Bible in the Nineteenth Century It is the object of the present course of lectures to sketch the conditions under which this has been effected, and exhibit some of its results. These have not been attained without difficulty. Powerful forces of tradition were arrayed against too bold enquirers. The influence of ecclesiastical corpora tions, large and small, established and non established, was invoked to suppress undue liberty and avert danger to the faith. It seems fitting, therefore, to recite very briefly at the outset the history of what may be called the struggle for freedom of Biblical research. The chief arena of this contest was the Church of England, though the same controversy arose outside as well as within its fold: and the decisions of the Anglican tribunals, together with the general progress of thought, have been the main instruments in securing for Biblical study in this country its legitimate place. In this respect, the contrast between the laxity of the eighteenth century and the stringency of the first half of the nineteenth is not without instruction.
