Book The Caucasian Chalk Circle

    Book Details:
  • Author : Bertolt Brecht
  • Publisher : Bloomsbury Publishing
  • Release : 2015-03-16
  • ISBN : 140816101X
  • Pages : 210 pages

Download or read book The Caucasian Chalk Circle written by Bertolt Brecht and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2015-03-16 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Student Edition of Brecht's classic dramatisation of the conflict over possession of a child features an extensive introduction and commentary that includes a plot summary, discussion of the context, themes, characters, style and language as well as questions for further study and notes on words and phrases in the text. It is the perfect edition for students of theatre and literature. Brecht projects an ancient Chinese story onto a realistic setting in Soviet Georgia. In a theme that echoes the Judgment of Solomon, two women argue over the possession of a child; thanks to the unruly judge, Azdak (one of Brecht's most vivid creations) natural justice is done and the peasant Grusha keeps the child she loves, even though she is not its mother. Written in exile in the United States during the Second World War, The Caucasian Chalk Circle is a politically-charged, much-revived and complex example of Brecht's epic theatre. This volume contains expert notes on the author's life and work, historical and political background to the play, photographs from stage productions and a glossary of difficult words and phrases. It features the acclaimed translation by James and Tania Stern with W. H. Auden.

Book Modern Drama and the Rhetoric of Theater

Download or read book Modern Drama and the Rhetoric of Theater written by W. B. Worthen and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2015-01-30 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The history of drama is typically viewed as a series of inert "styles." Tracing British and American stage drama from the 1880s onward, W. B. Worthen instead sees drama as the interplay of text, stage production, and audience. How are audiences manipulated? What makes drama meaningful? Worthen identifies three rhetorical strategies that distinguish an O'Neill play from a Yeats, or these two from a Brecht. Where realistic theater relies on the "natural" qualities of the stage scene, poetic theater uses the poet's word, the text, to control performance. Modern political theater, by contrast, openly places the audience at the center of its rhetorical designs, and the drama of the postwar period is shown to develop a range of post-Brechtian practices that make the audience the subject of the play. Worthen's book deserves the attention of any literary critic or serious theatergoer interested in the relationship between modern drama and the spectator.

Book The Idea of a Theater

Download or read book The Idea of a Theater written by Francis Fergusson and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2015-12-08 with total page 259 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An original and beautifully written book on changing perspectives in the art of theater. Through a study of nine plays—Oedipus Rex, Bérénice, Tristan und Isolde, Hamlet, Ghosts, The Cherry Orchard, Six Characters in Search of an Author, Noah, Murder in the Cathedral—the author shows how all playwrights seek to "hold the mirror up to nature" and how in this respect the art of drama is always the same, varying only with the philosophical and aesthetic concepts of each age. The Idea of a Theater will delight both readers with a special interest in drama and those who read drama as a source of insight into man's nature and man’s changing ideas of himself. Book Print Culture in Early Modern France

Download or read book Print Culture in Early Modern France written by Carl Goldstein and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2012-02-13 with total page 239 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book, Carl Goldstein examines the print culture of seventeenth-century France through a study of the career of Abraham Bosse, a well-known printmaker, book illustrator, and author of books and pamphlets on a variety of technical subjects. The consummate print professional, Bosse persistently explored the endless possibilities of print – single-sheet prints combining text and image, book illustration, broadsides, placards, almanacs, theses, and pamphlets. Bosse had a profound understanding of print technology as a fundamental agent of change. Unlike previous studies, which have largely focused on the printed word, this book demonstrates the extent to which the contributions of an individual printmaker and the visual image are fundamental to understanding the nature and development of early modern print culture.

Download or read book American Buffalo written by David Mamet and published by Grove/Atlantic, Inc.. This book was released on 2014-07-22 with total page 106 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: American Buffalo, which won both the Drama Critics Circle Award for the best American play and the Obie Award, is considered a classic of the American theater. Newsweek acclaimed Mamet as the “hot young American playwright . . . someone to watch.” The New York Times exclaimed in admiration: “The man can write!” Other critics called the play “a sizzler,” “super,” and “dynamite.” Now from Gregory Mosher, the producer of the original stage production, comes a stunning screen adaptation, directed by Michael Corrente and starring Dustin Hoffman, Dennis Franz, and Sean Nelson. A classic tragedy, American Buffalo is the story of three men struggling in the pursuit of their distorted vision of the American Dream. By turns touching and cynical, poignant and violent, American Buffalo is a piercing story of how people can be corrupted into betraying their ideals and those they love.
