Book Singularity Theory and Some Problems of Functional Analysis

Download or read book Singularity Theory and Some Problems of Functional Analysis written by Semen Grigorʹevich Gindikin and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 1992 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The emergence of singularity theory marks the return of mathematics to the study of the simplest analytical objects: functions, graphs, curves, surfaces. The modern singularity theory for smooth mappings, which is currently undergoing intensive developments, can be thought of as a crossroad where the most abstract topics (such as algebraic and differential geometry and topology, complex analysis, invariant theory, and Lie group theory) meet the most applied topics (such as dynamical systems, mathematical physics, geometrical optics, mathematical economics, and control theory). The papers in this volume include reviews of established areas as well as presentations of recent results in singularity theory. The authors have paid special attention to examples and discussion of results rather than burying the ideas in formalism, notation, and technical details. The aim is to introduce all mathematicians - as well as physicists, engineers, and other consumers of singularity theory - to the world of ideas and methods in this burgeoning area.

Book Ordered Sets and Lattices II

Download or read book Ordered Sets and Lattices II written by and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on with total page 262 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This indispensable reference source contains a wealth of information on lattice theory. The book presents a survey of virtually everything published in the fields of partially ordered sets, semilattices, lattices, and Boolean algebras that was reviewed in Referativnyi Zhurnal Matematika from mid-1982 to the end of 1985. A continuation of a previous volume (the English translation of which was published by the AMS in 1989, as volume 141 in Translations - Series 2), this comprehensive work contains more than 2200 references. Many of the papers covered here were originally published in virtually inaccessible places. The compilation of the volume was directed by Milan Kolibiar of Comenius University at Bratislava and Lev A. Skornyakov of Moscow University. Of interest to mathematicians, as well as to philosophers and computer scientists in certain areas, this unique compendium is a must for any mathematical library.

Book Selected topics in discrete mathematics Proceedings of the Moscow Discrete Mathematics Seminar 1972 1990

Download or read book Selected topics in discrete mathematics Proceedings of the Moscow Discrete Mathematics Seminar 1972 1990 written by Alexander K. Kelmans and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 1994-02-18 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a collection of translations of a variety of papers on discrete mathematics by members of the Moscow Seminar on Discrete Mathematics. This seminar, begun in 1972, was marked by active participation and intellectual ferment. Mathematicians in the USSR often encountered difficulties in publishing, so many interesting results in discrete mathematics remained unknown in the West for some years, and some are unknown even to the present day. To help fill this communication gap, this collection offers papers that were obscurely published and very hard to find. Among the topics covered here are: graph theory, network flow and multicommodity flow, linear programming and combinatorial optimization, matroid theory and submodular systems, matrix theory and combinatorics, parallel computing, complexity of algorithms, random graphs and statistical mechanics, coding theory, and algebraic combinatorics and group theory.

Book Wave propagation Scattering theory

Download or read book Wave propagation Scattering theory written by M. Sh Birman and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 1993-12-20 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The papers in this collection were written primarily by members of the St. Petersburg seminar in mathematical physics. The seminar, now run by O. A. Ladyzhenskaya, was initiated in 1947 by V. I. Smirnov, to whose memory this volume is dedicated. The papers in the collection are devoted mainly to wave propagation processes, scattering theory, integrability of nonlinear equations, and related problems of spectral theory of differential and integral operators. The book is of interest to mathematicians working in mathematical physics and differential equations, as well as to physicists studying various wave propagation processes.

Book Proceedings of the St Petersburg Mathematical Society Volume III

Download or read book Proceedings of the St Petersburg Mathematical Society Volume III written by Ol_ga Aleksandrovna Ladyzhenskai_a and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 1995-06-20 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Books in this series highlight some of the most interesting works presented at symposia sponsored by the St. Petersburg Mathematical Society. Aimed at researchers in number theory, field theory, and algebraic geometry, the present volume deals primarily with aspects of the theory of higher local fields and other types of complete discretely valuated fields. Most of the papers require background in local class field theory and algebraic $K$-theory; however, two of them, ``Unit Fractions'' and ``Collections of Multiple Sums'', would be accessible to undergraduates.

Book History of Functional Analysis

Download or read book History of Functional Analysis written by J. Dieudonne and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 1983-01-01 with total page 319 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: History of Functional Analysis presents functional analysis as a rather complex blend of algebra and topology, with its evolution influenced by the development of these two branches of mathematics. The book adopts a narrower definition—one that is assumed to satisfy various algebraic and topological conditions. A moment of reflections shows that this already covers a large part of modern analysis, in particular, the theory of partial differential equations. This volume comprises nine chapters, the first of which focuses on linear differential equations and the Sturm-Liouville problem. The succeeding chapters go on to discuss the ""crypto-integral"" equations, including the Dirichlet principle and the Beer-Neumann method; the equation of vibrating membranes, including the contributions of Poincare and H.A. Schwarz's 1885 paper; and the idea of infinite dimension. Other chapters cover the crucial years and the definition of Hilbert space, including Fredholm's discovery and the contributions of Hilbert; duality and the definition of normed spaces, including the Hahn-Banach theorem and the method of the gliding hump and Baire category; spectral theory after 1900, including the theories and works of F. Riesz, Hilbert, von Neumann, Weyl, and Carleman; locally convex spaces and the theory of distributions; and applications of functional analysis to differential and partial differential equations. This book will be of interest to practitioners in the fields of mathematics and statistics.
