Her sister, Pauline, says it's just the war to blame for their mother's odd behavior, talking to people who are not there. Amelia believes her mother knows about her extra sensibilities and doesn't like her because of it. At sixteen, when Amelia is subjected to her brother's sexual advances, and after a big row with her mother, she leaves home to live with a friend's family. Her boyfriend, Colin, convinces her that they should emigrate to America, where he believes he can be employed as a draftsman in New York. Feeling freedom she had never known before, Amelia readily agrees, but during the medical examination, she's told she has Tuberculosis. She persuades Colin to go alone, not realizing that the Vietnam War is brewing and that it might mean trouble for Colin. After her three month stint in a T.B. Out of a job, posing nude for Playboy Magazine is not beyond her. She's broke and alone. Then she hears that Colin is believed to have been captured and killed by the Viet Cong. Now, she's ready to quit New York and go home to England, but her fears about her mother and brother still linger in her mind. She eventually finds employment in New York and later marries a wonderful man who dies from a heart problem when their daughter is only six months old. Amelia goes home, at last, only to discover her brother is known in the neighborhood as a peeping tom. She knows her brother well, and fears he may rape a girl, or worse, so she calls the police! Not a smart thing to do because now she's ostracised by her parents for good, particularly her mother. Amelia is left with a child to bring up alone. Throughout the next few years, she becomes involved with different men that lead to love, heartbreak, regret, and guilt. Only when she's much older does she solve the mystery of the nine o'clock horses and her mother's secret past. This is a personal account of a shadowed life in true family situations that span four decades.
