Book excerpt: Nine O’ Clock (1852) is a novel by Wilkie Collins. Written in the aftermath of Antonina (1850), his successful debut, Nine O’ Clock finds the author honing the trademark sense of mystery and psychological unease that would make him a household name around the world. Recognized as an important Victorian novelist and pioneer of detective fiction, Wilkie Collins was a writer with a gift for thoughtful entertainment, stories written for a popular audience that continue to resonate with scholars and readers today. At the height of the French Revolution, a group of prisoners awaiting execution is given the chance at one last night with friends and family. Elated, they feast and drink with their loved ones, exchanging stories of the past and even cracking jokes on the infamous guillotine, the very instrument of death they will face in the morning. Despite this general sense of hopeless joy, one man, Duprat, avoids the trend toward gallows humor, refusing to speak on the subject. Pressed by his friend Marginy, however, a change comes over Duprat, who begins to reveal a strange foresight of his own impending doom. Beyond its sensational plot, Nine O’ Clock is a masterpiece of Gothic horror and mystery for seasoned readers of Victorian fiction and newcomers alike. With a beautifully designed cover and professionally typeset manuscript, this edition of Wilkie Collins’ Nine O’ Clock is a classic work of English literature reimagined for modern readers.

Download or read book Whiter Than Snow written by Sandra Dallas and published by Macmillan. This book was released on 2011-03-01 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From The New York Times bestselling author of Prayers for Sale comes the moving and powerful story of a small town after a devastating avalanche, and the life changing effects it has on the people who live there Whiter Than Snow opens in 1920, on a spring afternoon in Swandyke, a small town near Colorado's Tenmile Range. Just moments after four o'clock, a large split of snow separates from Jubilee Mountain high above the tiny hamlet and hurtles down the rocky slope, enveloping everything in its path including nine young children who are walking home from school. But only four children survive. Whiter Than Snow takes you into the lives of each of these families: There's Lucy and Dolly Patch—two sisters, long estranged by a shocking betrayal. Joe Cobb, Swandyke's only black resident, whose love for his daughter Jane forces him to flee Alabama. There's Grace Foote, who hides secrets and scandal that belies her genteel façade. And Minder Evans, a civil war veteran who considers his cowardice his greatest sin. Finally, there's Essie Snowball, born Esther Schnable to conservative Jewish parents, but who now works as a prostitute and hides her child's parentage from all the world. Ultimately, each story serves as an allegory to the greater theme of the novel by echoing that fate, chance, and perhaps even divine providence, are all woven into the fabric of everyday life. And it's through each character's defining moment in his or her past that the reader understands how each child has become its parent's purpose for living. In the end, it's a novel of forgiveness, redemption, survival, faith and family.

Book excerpt: Set in the 'Midlands' of England during WWII, the story reveals a family struggling to live with the nightly bombing raids, the destruction of homes around them, their neighbors, friends, and family members now gone, and the threat that Hitler might invade. Amelia Norton is the youngest child in the family of five. Her mother's ramblings about nine o'clock horses is a worry to Amelia who seems to know her mother's state of mind when she sees vibrant colors around her mother quite often. Auras that she thinks everyone can see. She has no idea it's a unique gift or curse. Her sister, Pauline, says it's just the war to blame for their mother's odd behavior, talking to people who are not there. Amelia believes her mother knows about her extra sensibilities and doesn't like her because of it. At sixteen, when Amelia is subjected to her brother's sexual advances, and after a big row with her mother, she leaves home to live with a friend's family. Her boyfriend, Colin, convinces her that they should emigrate to America, where he believes he can be employed as a draftsman in New York. Feeling freedom she had never known before, Amelia readily agrees, but during the medical examination, she's told she has Tuberculosis. She persuades Colin to go alone, not realizing that the Vietnam War is brewing and that it might mean trouble for Colin. After her three month stint in a T.B. Sanitarium, the only avenue open to Amelia is to go to the USA as an au-pair. It certainly opens up new vistas for her living with a wealthy family in New York. Meanwhile, Colin, now living in New York, has been called up to join the Military. Amelia is distraught about that, and then she accidentally discovers the lady of the house in an affair with the handsome Italian Baker and she's fired. Of course, finding out that Colin has been sent to Vietnam does little for her peace of mind and she's living in an awful basement apartment in Brooklyn. Out of a job, posing nude for Playboy Magazine is not beyond her. She's broke and alone. Then she hears that Colin is believed to have been captured and killed by the Viet Cong. Now, she's ready to quit New York and go home to England, but her fears about her mother and brother still linger in her mind. She eventually finds employment in New York and later marries a wonderful man who dies from a heart problem when their daughter is only six months old. Amelia goes home, at last, only to discover her brother is known in the neighborhood as a peeping tom. She knows her brother well, and fears he may rape a girl, or worse, so she calls the police! Not a smart thing to do because now she's ostracised by her parents for good, particularly her mother. Amelia is left with a child to bring up alone. Throughout the next few years, she becomes involved with different men that lead to love, heartbreak, regret, and guilt. Only when she's much older does she solve the mystery of the nine o'clock horses and her mother's secret past. This is a personal account of a shadowed life in true family situations that span four decades.
