Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I declare: "Gods though you be, offspring of the Most High all of you, Yet like any mortal you shall die; like any prince you shall fall." - Psalm 82:6-7 In the early morning hours of March 27, 1996, twenty armed members of the Groupe Islamique Arme raided the peaceful monastery of Tibhirine in Algeria and kidnapped seven of the nine monks who lived there. They were held for two months, then assassinated. For years, the monks had lived in harmony with the Muslim population in Algeria. They served the poor and needy in the area, providing education, employment, and medical assistance. The Blessed Martyrs of Tibhirine chose only to love, and this is their message for the Church today. Simply Christians: The Life and Message of the Blessed Martyrs of Tibhirine is much more than the story of a historical event. Each chapter focuses on one of the seven martyrs and how he uniquely lived the words of Christ: "No one has greater love than this, to lay down one's life for one's friends." Simply Christians: The Life and Message of the Blessed Martyrs of Tibhirine is the amazing true story that inspired the film "Of Gods and Men."

Book The Construction of Martyrdom in the English Catholic Community 1535 1603

Download or read book The Construction of Martyrdom in the English Catholic Community 1535 1603 written by Anne Dillon and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-03-02 with total page 746 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Between 1535 and 1603, more than 200 English Catholics were executed by the State for treason. Drawing on an extraordinary range of contemporary sources, Anne Dillon examines the ways in which these executions were transformed into acts of martyrdom. Utilizing the reports from the gallows, the Catholic community in England and in exile created a wide range of manuscripts and texts in which they employed the concept of martyrdom for propaganda purposes in continental Europe and for shaping Catholic identity and encouraging recusancy at home. Particularly potent was the derivation of images from these texts which provided visual means of conveying the symbol of the martyr. Through an examination of the work of Richard Verstegan and the martyr murals of the English College in Rome, the book explores the influence of these images on the Counter Reformation Church, the Jesuits, and the political intentions of English Catholics in exile and those of their hosts. The Construction of Martyrdom in the English Catholic Community, 1535-1603 shows how Verstegan used the English martyrs in his Theatrum crudelitatum of 1587 to rally support from Catholics on the Continent for a Spanish invasion of England to overthrow Elizabeth I and her government. The English martyr was, Anne Dillon argues, as much a construction of international, political rhetoric as it was of English religious and political debate; an international Catholic banner around which Catholic European powers were urged to rally.

Coptic Monasteries takes the reader on a tour of the best preserved and most significant of these ancient religious centers, documenting in exhaustive detail the richness and the glory of the Coptic heritage. An informative introduction by Tim Vivian brings to life the early Christian era, with background information on the origins of the Coptic Church as well as its rites and ceremonies, sketches of some of monasticism's founding figures, and accounts of some of the difficulties they faced, from religious schism to nomadic attacks. Gawdat Gabra's expert commentary, complemented by almost one hundred full-color photographs of newly restored wall paintings and architectural features, covers monasteries from Aswan to Wadi al-Natrun. Ranging across a thousand years of history, Gabra's observations will make any reader an expert on the composition and content of some of Egypt's most outstanding religious art, the salient architectural features of each monastery, as well as the ongoing process of restoration that has returned much of their original vibrancy to these works. A unique and invaluable historical record, Coptic Monasteries is equally an in-depth, on-the-spot guide to these living monuments or an armchair trip back in time to the roots of one of the world's oldest Christian traditions.

Book Evelyn Underhill

Download or read book Evelyn Underhill written by Evelyn Underhill and published by SUNY Press. This book was released on 1988-01-01 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Evelyn Underhill was a pioneer in revitalizing interest in mysticism and in the spiritual life as lived by ordinary people. Here are some of her articles that demonstrate the variety and development of her thought over forty years. The themes of magic and mysticism, prayer and pacifism are all considered, with particular emphasis on Underhill's focus on personal religious experience, its nurturance in prayer, its protection by institutional religion, and its implications for all aspects of life. Together, the pieces illuminate the author's move from Platonism to the incarnational spirituality lived out during the years between the world wars. Greene's interpretive introduction to the life and work of this contemporary mystic is most helpful for those previously unfamiliar with Underhill. The book contains the most complete bibliography available on works by and about this important woman.
