Book excerpt: In the future of an alternate world, Nimbus Stadt was a vast municipality on the continent of Vespasia. Only 115 miles away from the famous city of Polyxenburgh, Nimbus Stadt was a city where many immigrants to Vespasia first started their lives. One such immigrant was Taddeo Orzelli, a man who struggled at first to make ends meet. Taddeo struggled against the nativist policies of the native born Vespasians and their anti-immigration legislation in Vespasia. A different man, Jarvis Vassalle, the grandson of immigrants, struggled to find meaning in a world of dark secrets and wonderful hidden mysteries. Both of these men and their comrades will have to seek the truth while combating the machinations of a secret elite who will stop at nothing to achieve their malevolent goals. In the end, both Taddeo and Jarvis will meet their destinies in Nimbus Stadt. This is the sequel to Polyxenburgh.

Download or read book Lost in Time written by June J. Hwang and published by Northwestern University Press. This book was released on 2014-08 with total page 245 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: June J. Hwang’s provocative Lost in Time explores discourses of timelessness in the works of central figures of German modernity such as Walter Benjamin, Georg Simmel, Siegfried Kracauer, and Helmuth Plessner, as well as those of Alfred Döblin, Joseph Roth, and Hugo Bettauer. Hwang argues that in the Weimar Republic the move toward ahistoricization is itself a historical phenomenon, one that can be understood by exploring the intersections of discourses about urban modernity, the stranger, and German Jewish identity. These intersections shed light on conceptions of German Jewish identity that rely on a negation of the specific and temporal as a way to legitimize a historical outsider position, creating a dynamic position that simultaneously challenges and acknowledges the limitations of an outsider’s agency. She reads these texts as attempts to transcend the particular, attempts that paradoxically reveal the entanglement of the particular and the universal.

Book excerpt: "Nuremberg: The Imaginary Capital is a broad study of German cultural and intellectual history since 1500, with a particular emphasis on the period from 1800 to the present. The book explores the ways in which Germans, over the past two centuries, have imagined Nuremberg as a cultural and spiritual capital, focusing feelings of national identity and belonging on the city - or on their Images of it." "Nuremberg: The Imaginary Capital analyzes the way in which a particular city came to be seen, in Germany and elsewhere, as representative of the national whole. The book goes beyond the analysis of particular historical periods by showing how successive epochs' images of Nuremberg built on those preceding them; thus German cultural and intellectual history is shown as an intelligible unity centered around fascination with and veneration for a particular city."

Book excerpt: It is a misconception that Christianity and Humanism are in any way in conflict with each other. The present book shows that through many centuries, and especially in the Renaissance, the two stood in a relation that was mutually complementary. The contributions in this volume treat aspects and manifestations of this cultural symbiosis, and they throw new light on authors and texts both more and less familiar. The subject-areas discussed include: religion, history, philosophy, literature and education. The age of Renaissance and Reformation is the central focus, but earlier and later periods are also featured. The contributions comprise a Festschrift for Professor Arjo Vanderjagt, whose work deals centrally with both Christianity and Humanism. Contributors are Fokke Akkerman, Istv n P. Bejczy, Alexander Broadie, Chris-toph Burger, Marcia L. Colish, Albrecht Diem, Stephen Gersh, Berndt Hamm, Volker Honemann, Adrie van der Laan, Alasdair A. MacDonald, Peter Mack, Zweder von Martels, Matthieu van der Meer, Hans Mooij, Simone Mooij-Valk, Just Niemeijer, John North, Willemien Otten, Jan Papy, Detlev P tzold, Rob Pauls, Marc van der Poel, Burcht Pranger, Peter Raedts, Han van Ruler, Rudolf Suntrup, Jan R. The authors show various aspects of this cultural cross-fertilization, despite religious and ethnic differences. The studies promptthoughts on a question which is important for the present and the future: How may the different religions, cultures and concepts of knowledge continue to be conveyed in synthesis? The volume publishes the lectures given at the July 2004 international congress at the occasion of the 800th anniversary of Maimonides’ death.
