Book excerpt: Among the first written accounts of the concentration camps—a major literary and historical discovery. While in a Russian-administered holding camp in Katowice, Poland, in 1945, Primo Levi was asked to provide a report on living conditions in Auschwitz. Published the following year, it was subsequently forgotten and remained unknown to a wider public. Dating from the weeks and months immediately after the war, Auschwitz Report details the authors’ harrowing deportation to Auschwitz, and how those who disembarked from the train were selected for work or extermination. As well as being a searing narrative of everyday life in the camp, and the organization and working of the gas chambers, it constitutes Levi’s first lucid attempts to come to terms with the raw horror of events that would drive him to create some of the greatest works of twentieth-century literature and testimony. Auschwitz Report is a major literary and historical discovery.

Book The Strange Career of Legal Liberalism

Download or read book The Strange Career of Legal Liberalism written by Laura Kalman and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 1998-08-11 with total page 388 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Legal scholarship is in a state of crisis, Laura Kalman argues in this history of the most prestigious field in law studies: constitutional theory. Since the time of the New Deal, says Kalman, most law scholars have identified themselves as liberals who believe in the power of the Supreme Court to effect progressive social change. In recent years, however, new political and interdisciplinary perspectives have undermined the tenets of legal liberalism, and liberal law professors have enlisted other disciplines in the attempt to legitimize their beliefs. Such prominent legal thinkers as Cass Sunstein, Bruce Ackerman, and Frank Michelman have incorporated the work of historians into their legal theories and arguments, turning to eighteenth-century republicanism--which stressed communal values and an active citizenry--to justify their goals. Kalman, a historian and a lawyer, suggests that reliance on history in legal thinking makes sense at a time when the Supreme Court repeatedly declares that it will protect only those liberties rooted in history and tradition. There are pitfalls in interdisciplinary argumentation, she cautions, for historians' reactions to this use of their work have been unenthusiastic and even hostile. Yet lawyers, law professors, and historians have cooperated in some recent Supreme Court cases, and Kalman concludes with a practical examination of the ways they can work together more effectively as social activists.

Book She d Waited Millennia

Download or read book She d Waited Millennia written by Lizzie Hutton and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 64 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ''In She'd Waited Millennia, there is a persistent, sometimes anguished recognition of the dominance of what we call the interior world, that world where we exist most fully in thought or perception. The phenomenal world of people and things exists alright, along with the names we use to contain them, and yet the recognition of that is too a source of loneliness, 'just another story of the self and itself.'(''Low City'') The beauty, the courage, in the poems collected here is evident in the attempted transit from Self to Other, in the struggle between what George Oppen called 'the shipwreck of the singular, ' and in the difficult, persistent hope to 'say something to the others.'(''The Green Ray'') In her unflinching description of an individual psyche, Lizzie Hutton presents a portrait of the human condition which will be recognized by all.''--Claudia Keelan.

Book Reading Faulkner

    Book Details:
  • Author : Joseph R. Urgo
  • Publisher : Univ. Press of Mississippi
  • Release : 2010-02-02
  • ISBN : 1604734353
  • Pages : 224 pages

Download or read book Reading Faulkner written by Joseph R. Urgo and published by Univ. Press of Mississippi. This book was released on 2010-02-02 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Absalom, Absalom! has long been regarded as one of William Faulkner's most difficult, dense, and multilayered novels. It is, on one level, the story of Thomas Sutpen, an enigmatic stranger who came to Jefferson in the early 1830s to wrest his mansion out of the muddy bottoms of the north Mississippi wilderness. He was a man, Faulkner said, “who wanted sons and the sons destroyed him.” On another level, the book narrates the tragedy that befalls the entire Sutpen family and that tragedy's legacy that continues well into the twentieth century and beyond. The novel's intricate, demanding prose style, and its haunting dramatization of the South's intricate, demanding history make it a masterpiece of twentieth-century American literature. Reading Faulkner: Absalom, Absalom! offers a close examination and interpretation of the novel. Here difficult words and cultural terms that might prove to be a problem for general readers are explained and keyed to page numbers in the definitive Faulkner text (Library of America and Vintage editions). The authors place Faulkner's novel in its historical context, while also connecting it to his other works.
