Download or read book Nil Sorsky the Complete Writings written by Saint Nil (Sorskiĭ) and published by Paulist Press. This book was released on 2003 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An important addition to the Classics of Western Spirituality(TM) series is this volume of the writings of Nil Sorsky (+1508), an influential spiritual writer whose major contribution to Eastern Christianity was his bringing to ancient Russia the spirituality of the early Fathers and Mothers of the Desert. This is called the hesychasm spirituality of the heart, which finds the perfection of the human person in union with God through continuous prayer. This first-time translation from Russian into English of Nil's complete writings includes: The Tradition, The Rule, his letters (only four of which have actually been attributed to him) and his last will and testament. The Tradition is his earliest attempt to give his disciples a written but very simplified rule of skete monasticism, which he practiced on Mt. Athos. The Rule is an extended ascetical treatise on what Nil calls "mental activity" or, in today's terms, perpetual or continuous prayer. An informative introduction examines the significance of Nil's spirituality and places it within the historical setting of 15th century Russia. +

Download or read book Late Medieval Mysticism of the Low Countries written by Rik Van Nieuwenhove and published by Paulist Press. This book was released on 2008 with total page 440 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "When one looks at an icon, one bas the sense that God is looking back. Our whole person is involved. What the prayers and music of the Feast convey through the ears, the icon conveys visually." This book showcases a collection of extraordinarily beautiful icons that introduces readers and art appreciators to the spiritual riches of the Byzantine liturgical tradition. The author, Father Michael Evdokimov, presents an icon for each of the twelve great feasts of the Orthodox Christian liturgical year. Preceding each icon is a brief commentary of what the reader can hope to find in the icon, including nuances that a casual observer might miss. Facing each icon are prayers appropriate for meditating on the icon. Quotations from spiritual writers of all ages of Christianity are interspersed in the book. In a simple, straightforward manner, Evdokimov shows how the prayers and the icons used to worship God can nourish the spiritual life. Although he sets before his readers beliefs and practices common to Orthodox people everywhere in the world, anyone who appreciates beautiful art will find much to savor here.
Download or read book The Spiritual Guide written by Miguel de Molinos and published by Paulist Press. This book was released on 2010 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In one series, the original writings of the universally acknowledged teachers of the Catholic, Protestant, Eastern Orthodox, Jewish, and Islamic traditions have been critically selected, translated, and introduced by internationally recognized scholars and spiritual leaders. Miguel de Molinos (c. 1628-1696) was one of the most important figures in the religious controversy known as Quietism. Spanish by birth, he spent nearly his entire adult life in Rome, where he attracted wide fame as a spiritual director and gained the favor of several prominent figures. His Spiritual Guide (1675) recommended a life of spiritual simplicity and promoted what became known as the prayer of quiet. On publication it was an immediate bestseller, but the Guide's fame came to an abrupt end in 1685 when Molinos was accused of heresy and sentenced to life imprisonment. He died in prison in 1696. This Classics of Western Spirituality edition of the Spiritual Guide was translated from the new critical edition of José Ignacio Tellechea Idígoras. It provides an unabridged translation in modern English along with a historical introduction by the translator and a theological introduction by the eminent scholar Bernard McGinn. Book jacket.

Download or read book Dictionary of Christian Spirituality written by Zondervan, and published by Zondervan Academic. This book was released on 2016-11-22 with total page 2439 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In recent decades Christian spirituality, spiritual formation and spiritual theology have become important concepts in the global evangelical community. Consequently, an accessible and reliable academic resource is needed on these topics—one that will offer a discerning orientation to the wealth of ecumenical resources available while still highlighting the distinct heritage and affirming the core grace-centered values of classic evangelical spirituality. The Dictionary of Christian Spirituality reflects an overarching interpretive framework for evangelical spiritual formation: a holistic and grace-filled spirituality that encompasses relational (connecting), transformational (becoming), and vocational (doing) dynamics. At the same time, contributors respectfully acknowledge the differences between Reformed, Holiness, and Pentecostal paradigms of the spiritual life. And, by bringing together writers from around the world who share a common orthodoxy, this reference work is truly global and international in both its topical scope and contributors. Entries give appropriate attention to concepts, concerns, and formative figures in the evangelical tradition of spirituality that other reference work neglect. They offer a discerning orientation to the wealth of ecumenical resources available, exploring the similarities and differences between Christianity and alternate spiritualities without lapsing into relativism. The Dictionary of Christian Spirituality is a resource that covers a wide range of topics relating to Christian spirituality and is biblically engaged, accessible, and relevant for all contemporary Christians.

Download or read book Hesychasm and Art written by Anita Strezova and published by ANU Press. This book was released on 2014-09-01 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Although many of the iconographic traditions in Byzantine art formed in the early centuries of Christianity, they were not petrified within a time warp. Subtle changes and refinements in Byzantine theology did find reflection in changes to the iconographic and stylistic conventions of Byzantine art. This is a brilliant and innovative book in which Dr Anita Strezova argues that a religious movement called Hesychasm, especially as espoused by the great Athonite monk St Gregory Palamas, had a profound impact on the iconography and style of Byzantine art, including that of the Slav diaspora, of the late Byzantine period. While many have been attracted to speculate on such a connection, none until now has embarked on proving such a nexus. The main stumbling blocks have included the need for a comprehensive knowledge of Byzantine theology; a training in art history, especially iconological, semiotic and formalist methodologies; extensive fieldwork in Macedonia, Bulgaria, Serbia, Greece, Turkey and Russia, and a working knowledge of Greek, Old Church Slavonic, Macedonian, Russian, Serbian, Latin as well as several modern European languages, French, German, Russian and Italian. These are some of the skills which Dr Strezova has brought to her topic.” Professor Sasha Grishin AM, FAHA Adjunct Professor of Art History School of Literature, Languages and Linguistics The Australian National University
Download or read book Vasilii Rozanov and the Creation written by Adam Ure and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2011-07-28 with total page 279 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides the first detailed study in English of the religious philosophy of Vasilii Rozanov, one of the most influential and controversial thinkers of Russia's Silver Age. It examines his subversion of traditional Russian Orthodoxy, including his reverence for the Creation, his focus on the family, and his worship of sex. Rozanov is one of the towering figures of Russian culture, a major influence on thinkers and writers such as Bakhtin, Maiakovskii, and Mandel ́shtam, as well as many European writers. He critiqued Orthodox theology, and wrote extensively on philosophy, literature, and politics, and helped reform marriage and divorce laws. His enormous contribution to Russian thought has been largely neglected, and much of his work has been misunderstood. Ure addresses this by examining the basis of Rozanov's religious philosophy, the Creation of the Earth and the Book of Genesis.

Download or read book The Big Book of Christian Mysticism written by Carl McColman and published by Broadleaf Books . This book was released on 2021-11-16 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In popular usage, "mysticism" typically refers to New Age or Eastern forms of spirituality. However, the mystical tradition is also an important component of the Christian tradition. At its heart--and much like its expression in other faith traditions--Christian mysticism is an ancient practice that incorporates meditation, contemplation, worship, philosophy, the quest for personal enlightenment, and the experience of Divine presence. This volume is a comprehensive introduction and guide to Christian mysticism. It is a big book about a big possibility: the hope of achieving real, blissful, experiential unison with God. Among the topics covered here are a general introduction to mysticism, the Bible and mysticism, the history and types of Christian mysticism, biographical sketches of leading Christian mystics, and practical instructions about practicing mysticism today. This is a breathtaking work that explores a form of spirituality that has changed lives over the course of 2,000 years. Learning about Christian mysticism and how it has been articulated through the centuries will prove inspirational for today's seekers, regardless of the faith tradition. "The mystic is not a special kind of person; every person is a special kind of mytic." --William McNamara
