Download or read book The Chosen Ones written by Nikki Jones and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2018-05-25 with total page 249 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In The Chosen Ones, sociologist and feminist scholar Nikki Jones shares the compelling story of a group of Black men living in San Francisco’s historically Black neighborhood, the Fillmore. Against all odds, these men work to atone for past crimes by reaching out to other Black men, young and old, with the hope of guiding them toward a better life. Yet despite their genuine efforts, they struggle to find a new place in their old neighborhood. With a poignant yet hopeful voice, Jones illustrates how neighborhood politics, everyday interactions with the police, and conservative Black gender ideologies shape the men’s ability to make good and forgive themselves—and how the double-edged sword of community shapes the work of redemption.
Download or read book News for the Rich White and Blue written by Nikki Usher and published by Columbia University Press. This book was released on 2021-07-06 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As cash-strapped metropolitan newspapers struggle to maintain their traditional influence and quality reporting, large national and international outlets have pivoted to serving readers who can and will choose to pay for news, skewing coverage toward a wealthy, white, and liberal audience. Amid rampant inequality and distrust, media outlets have become more out of touch with the democracy they purport to serve. How did journalism end up in such a predicament, and what are the prospects for achieving a more equitable future? In News for the Rich, White, and Blue, Nikki Usher recasts the challenges facing journalism in terms of place, power, and inequality. Drawing on more than a decade of field research, she illuminates how journalists decide what becomes news and how news organizations strategize about the future. Usher shows how newsrooms remain places of power, largely white institutions growing more elite as journalists confront a shrinking job market. She details how Google, Facebook, and the digital-advertising ecosystem have wreaked havoc on the economic model for quality journalism, leaving local news to suffer. Usher also highlights how the handful of likely survivors—well-funded media outlets such as the New York Times—increasingly appeal to a global, “placeless” reader. News for the Rich, White, and Blue concludes with a series of provocative recommendations to reimagine journalism to ensure its resiliency and its ability to speak to a diverse set of issues and readers.
Download or read book The Kagero Diary written by and published by U of M Center For Japanese Studies. This book was released on 1997-08-01 with total page 433 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Japan is the only country in the world where women writers laid the foundations of classical literature. The Kagero Diary commands our attention as the first extant work of that rich and brilliant tradition. The author, known to posterity as Michitsuna’s Mother, a member of the middle-ranking aristocracy of the Heian period (794–1185), wrote an account of 20 years of her life (from 954–74), and this autobiographical text now gives readers access to a woman’s experience of a thousand years ago. The diary centers on the author’s relationship with her husband, Fujiwara Kaneie, her kinsman from a more powerful and prestigious branch of the family than her own. Their marriage ended in divorce, and one of the author’s intentions seems to have been to write an anti-romance, one that could be subtitled, “I married the prince but we did not live happily ever after.” Yet, particularly in the first part of the diary, Michitsuna’s Mother is drawn to record those events and moments when the marriage did live up to a romantic ideal fostered by the Japanese tradition of love poetry. At the same time, she also seems to seek the freedom to live and write outside the romance myth and without a husband. Since the author was by inclination and talent a poet and lived in a time when poetry was a part of everyday social intercourse, her account of her life is shaped by a lyrical consciousness. The poems she records are crystalline moments of awareness that vividly recall the past. This new translation of the Kagero Diary conveys the long, fluid sentences, the complex polyphony of voices, and the floating temporality of the original. It also pays careful attention to the poems of the text, rendering as much as possible their complex imagery and open-ended quality. The translation is accompanied by running notes on facing pages and an introduction that places the work within the context of contemporary discussions regarding feminist literature and the genre of autobiography and provides detailed historical information and a description of the stylistic qualities of the text.

Download or read book The L A Journal written by Lance Chadwick Davis and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2015-06-19 with total page 499 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This diary records the details, emotional and salacious, of two periods in the life of an academic. In 1989 his wife of twenty years was killed instantly while driving to work. Six months later, he fell into a romantic relationship with a former student as he tried to cope with the loss of his wife. He kept a diary in which he recorded his emotional conflicts when he faced the hard choice of disconnecting from his first love while rearing his teenage daughter as a single parent and rediscovering romance with five different women during the course of the next three years. Its all there. The overwhelming sense of loss, the uncertainty of single parenthood, his reeducation in sex and romance after nearly twenty years of marriage. Its a daily account of a middle-aged mans struggles as he forged his way into an entirely new personal life in a coming-of-age story that usually occurs when men are twenty or thirty years younger. Its a tale of belated innocence lost and of uncertainty and surprise about the nature of romance and sex, a generation after having first fallen in love. You can sense the conflict as he weighs his new experiences and the possibilities that his newfound relationships hold against his cherished memories. You can sense his amazement as he relearns what younger women expect from him in terms of sex and romance. The diary is put away once his life returns to an even keel, and he finally remarries. His second wife is a former student and a generation younger. But entries into the diary are reinitiated about fifteen years into the marriage and are occasioned by his troubled transition from academia to retirement. Once again he is conflicted with a change in his identity, and the symptoms of depression take a temporary toll on his marriage. His recorded experiences constitute a frank and poignant memoir even though they account for only a handful of years in his life, and its likely that adults of all ages will find something within his journal with which they can identify. The L.A. Journal should enjoy broad market appeal, since it is teeming with tragedy, emotional conflict, romance, sex, depression, the relationship between a widower dad and his adolescent daughter, rediscovery of self, and assimilation of a new life at midlife. And all of it is true with events recorded as they occurred.

Download or read book Aesthetics of Excess written by Jillian Hernandez and published by Duke University Press. This book was released on 2020-09-21 with total page 237 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Heavy makeup, gaudy jewelry, dramatic hairstyles, and clothes that are considered cheap, fake, too short, too tight, or too masculine: working-class Black and Latina girls and women are often framed as embodying "excessive" styles that are presumed to indicate sexual deviance. In Aesthetics of Excess Jillian Hernandez examines how middle-class discourses of aesthetic value racialize the bodies of women and girls of color. At the same time, their style can be a source of cultural capital when appropriated by the contemporary art scene. Drawing on her community arts work with Black and Latina girls in Miami, Hernandez analyzes the art and self-image of these girls alongside works produced by contemporary artists and pop musicians such as Wangechi Mutu, Kara Walker, and Nicki Minaj. Through these relational readings, Hernandez shows how notions of high and low culture are complicated when women and girls of color engage in cultural production and how they challenge the policing of their bodies and sexualities through artistic authorship.

Download or read book American Exposures written by Louis Kaplan and published by U of Minnesota Press. This book was released on 2005 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "American Exposures sheds light on photographs, from Arthur Mole's propagandistic 'living photographs' of American icons and symbols to the exploration of contemporary subcultural communities by the Korean-born photographer and performance artist Nikki Lee, and asserts that the depiction of community is a central component to photography. Louis Kaplan deploys a number of critical concepts and theories developed by Jean-Luc Nancy in The Inoperative Community, as well as other philosophers, and applies them to the field of photography studies. With an original approach to photography from Edward Steichen's Family of Man exhibition to Pedro Meyer and the rise of the digital image, Kaplan points to a new way to think about the intimate relationship among photography, American life, and the artistic imagination." -- Back cover.

Book excerpt: This personal memoir “reminds us that there is no such thing as an ordinary moment, and certainly no such thing as an ordinary life.” —Elizabeth Gilbert, author of Eat, Pray, Love The Journal Keeper is an openhearted, unflinchingly honest memoir of six years in Phyllis Theroux’s life as she ages into her sixties.
