Book excerpt: Screenwise offers a realistic and optimistic perspective on how to thoughtfully guide kids in the digital age. Many parents feel that their kids are addicted, detached, or distracted because of their digital devices. Media expert Devorah Heitner, however, believes that technology offers huge potential to our children-if parents help them. Using the foundation of their own values and experiences, parents and educators can learn about the digital world to help set kids up for a lifetime of success in a world fueled by technology. Screenwise is a guide to understanding more about what it is like for children to grow up with technology, and to recognizing the special challenges-and advantages-that contemporary kids and teens experience thanks to this level of connection. In it, Heitner presents practical parenting "hacks": quick ideas that you can implement today that will help you understand and relate to your digital native. The book will empower parents to recognize that the wisdom that they have gained throughout their lives is a relevant and urgently needed supplement to their kid's digital savvy, and help them develop skills for managing the new challenges of parenting. Based on real-life stories from other parents and Heitner's wealth of knowledge on the subject, Screenwise teaches parents what they need to know in order to raise responsible digital citizens.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hugely enjoyable, long awaited book by top world authority on "Buffy the Vampire Slayer". Buffy is still on screens and on DVD in home television libraries of a wide array of TV watchers and fans. This is also the student text for TV and cultural studies at colleges and universities where Buffy is widely taught. Rhonda Wilcox is a world authority on "Buffy the Vampire Slayer", who has been writing and lecturing about the show since its arrival on our screens. This book is the distillation of this remarkable body of work and thought, a celebration of the series that she proposes is an aesthetic test case for television. Buffy is enduring as art, she argues, by exploring its own possibilities for long-term construction as well as producing individual episodes that are powerful in their own right. She examines therefore the larger patterns that extend through many episodes: the hero myth, the imagery of light, naming symbolism, Spike, sex and redemption, Buffy Summers compared and contrasted with Harry Potter. She then moves in to focus on individual episodes, such as the "Buffy musical Once More, with Feeling", the largely silent Hush and the dream episode "Restless" (T.S. Eliot comes to television). She also examines Buffy's ways of making meaning - from literary narrative and symbolism to visual imagery and sound. Combining great intelligence and wit, written for the wide Buffy readership, this is the worthy companion to the show that has claimed and kept the minds and hearts of watchers worldwide.

This book offers answers to why so many of us are unable to experience the divine strength that was evident among first-century Christians. In Killing Kryptonite, John Bevere reveals what this kryptonite is, why it’s compromising our communities, and how to break free from its bondage. Not for the faint of heart, Killing Kryptonite is anything but a spiritual sugar high. Book Nightmare

  • Author : Warren Watkins
  • Publisher : Christian Faith Publishing, Inc.
  • Release : 2020-05-19
  • ISBN : 1098012003
  • Pages : 161 pages

Download or read book Nightmare written by Warren Watkins and published by Christian Faith Publishing, Inc.. This book was released on 2020-05-19 with total page 161 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Satan marched into the presence of God, demanding permission to attack the family. He accused them of being frauds and phonies, insisting his attack would end with the parents cursing God to his face. God refused Satan's full demands, but gave him permission to use their daughter, Andie, in any way he chose. Andie and her family never saw it coming. They were ordinary everyday people, living their lives like everyone else. Until it happened. The attack was vicious, depraved, and blood-thirsty. We don't wrestle against flesh and blood. Our battle is with Satan's demonic terrorist organization. This adversary is massive in size and highly organized, with centuries of experience perfecting its weapons. And Satan's demons are invisible. If you experience an attack of Satan, you will not see his demons before, during, or after the assault. You will be taken by complete surprise. And nothing will prepare you for the scope of the vicious destruction he unleashes. Nightmare serves as a warning to all Christians. Pay attention to the instructions in Ephesians chapter six. Without God and his guardian angels, you do not want to experience the monster and his nightmare.

Book Privilege of Parenting

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A clinical psychologist with 19 years of experience working with kids from all walks of life-from deeply troubled children mired in LA's child welfare system to the privileged scions of the Beverly Hills elite-Dr. Dolin delivers a practical, compassionate guide for parents that will help children thrive through their most difficult passages. For it is when our children are at their worst-depressed, anxious, defiant, angry or fearful-that we are called upon to do our best. More than just a guide to mindful parenting, "Privilege of Parenting" provides a veritable toolkit for parents dealing with problem behaviors ranging from everyday sadness and fears to severe clinical issues. In every case, Dr. Dolin frames each behavior, discusses causes and contributing factors, and then distills the essence of what helps. He illustrates his advice with extraordinary-and moving-anecdotes of the children and families with whom he has worked. This is a book that is inspiring, instructive and a pleasure to read. Dr. Dolin's approach represents a kind of "yoga of parenting." Not surprisingly, yoga is among Dr. Dolin's various prescriptions. All parents love their children. "Privilege of Parenting" will help readers transform the abiding love they have for their children into compassionate, insightful and consistent parenting. Privilege of Parenting is a psychological guide that helps parents build-and repair-nourishing and empathic relationships with their children. "Privilege of Parenting" equips parents with deeper insights into the fears and blind-spots that hinder us as parents and gives guidelines, approaches and strategies for getting it right with our kids as well as tools for personal growth in the service of better parenting. "Privilege of Parenting" is not only a "how-to" but ultimately a "why to" book that likens parenting to yoga and helps the reader realize that in parenting as their best Self, they are inherently following an often overlooked path to potential happiness, wellness and spirit.

Book An East Tennessee Nightmare Lying in Wait

Download or read book An East Tennessee Nightmare Lying in Wait written by Babette Anton and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2008-11 with total page 186 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The men and women of Appalachia are strong and self-sufficient. In Roane County, Tennessee they most often have lived on and between the foothills of the Great Smokey Mountains. Times changed and as they did in this story, those who had become clearly isolated in their long-standing culture took change personally. They didn't like it. Leon and Rocky Houston are two such men, along with a large group of sympathetic followers. In the end that sympathy portrayed years of self-styled, anti-government lawsuits as well as the death of a sheriff's deputy and his retired, disabled ride-along officer. To believe the fifteen to twenty years of this rising storm ended in death for two men patrolling the public road "reserved" for the Houston clan came only as somewhat of a surprise. To believe that the storm clouds descended due to a school zone traffic violation five years before the killin's was at first a mystery. But a deep look at Rocky's 2001 courtroom "ticket tantrum" unveiled much more: Then and there he reportedly threw himself on the floor while yelling, "if you remember Waco you haven't seen anything yet." The comment's starkness unwinds within the book to explore the "sovereign citizens and militia mania" of the 90's and where that might have taken the brothers Houstons' thinking and need to kill "a few cops."

Luckily, Buffy finds her way with a can-do attitude, a weird Watcher, and new besties, Sarafina and Alvaro--who might just have powers of their own. But will any of it be enough to turn the tide when an army of villainous vampires invade town? Can Buffy save herself, let alone the world?
