Book excerpt: An NYRB Classics Original Deep in Provence, a century ago, four stone houses perch on a hillside. Wildness presses in from all sides. Beyond a patchwork of fields, a mass of green threatens to overwhelm the village. The animal world—a miming cat, a malevolent boar—displays a mind of its own. The four houses have a dozen residents—and then there is Gagou, a mute drifter. Janet, the eldest of the men, is bedridden; he feels snakes writhing in his fingers and speaks in tongues. Even so, all is well until the village fountain suddenly stops running. From this point on, humans and the natural world are locked in a life-and-death struggle. All the elements—fire, water, earth, and air—come into play. From an early age, Jean Giono roamed the hills of his native Provence. He absorbed oral traditions and, at the same time, devoured the Greek and Roman classics. Hill, his first novel and the first winner of the Prix Brentano, comes fully back to life in Paul Eprile’s poetic translation.

Book Black Marxism Revised and Updated Third Edition

Download or read book Black Marxism Revised and Updated Third Edition written by Cedric J. Robinson and published by UNC Press Books. This book was released on 2020-12-16 with total page 497 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this ambitious work, first published in 1983, Cedric Robinson demonstrates that efforts to understand Black people's history of resistance solely through the prism of Marxist theory are incomplete and inaccurate. Marxist analyses tend to presuppose European models of history and experience that downplay the significance of Black people and Black communities as agents of change and resistance. Black radicalism, Robinson argues, must be linked to the traditions of Africa and the unique experiences of Blacks on Western continents, and any analyses of African American history need to acknowledge this. To illustrate his argument, Robinson traces the emergence of Marxist ideology in Europe, the resistance by Blacks in historically oppressive environments, and the influence of both of these traditions on such important twentieth-century Black radical thinkers as W. E. B. Du Bois, C. L. R. James, and Richard Wright. This revised and updated third edition includes a new preface by Tiffany Willoughby-Herard, and a new foreword by Robin D. G. Kelley.

Book Hemingway s Art of Revision

Download or read book Hemingway s Art of Revision written by John Beall and published by LSU Press. This book was released on 2024-05 with total page 310 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "In Hemingway's Art of Revision: The Making of the Short Fiction, John Beall examines in close detail two of the author's vignettes from the first version of In Our Time and ten of his short stories, with an extensive focus on manuscripts and typescripts, as part of a broader examination of how Ernest Hemingway crafted his distinctive prose through a rigorous process of revision. The first three chapters discuss the influence of Hemingway's three most important modernist mentors: Ezra Pound, James Joyce, and Gertrude Stein. The first chapter focuses on Pound's influence as the editor of the Inquest Series, of which Hemingway's in our time was the final publication. The second chapter examines the affinities between Joyce's "The Sisters" and Hemingway's "Indian Camp." In particular, Beall develops the case for Joyce's influence on Hemingway's decision to revise the story to maintain the reader's focus on young Nick Adams's point of view in his first encounter with death. Chapter three explores Hemingway's revisions of "Cat in the Rain" as reflecting the influence of Stein's novellas and sketches, as well as that of Joyce's stories and novels. The remaining chapters delve into the artistry of Hemingway's extensive revisions in later masterpieces from "Big Two-Hearted River" to "Fathers and Sons." Beall's discussion of "Big Two-Hearted River" shows that Hemingway's revisions were not simply cuts and omissions, but included several paragraphs that he added to slow down the narrative and represent Nick Adams's careful observations of a kingfisher and trout as he watched their shadows on the river. The chapter on "The Battler" and "The Killers" explores the extent to which Hemingway's revisions brought racial conflicts to the forefront of each story and portrayed Bugs and Sam as guides for Nick Adams. A subsequent reading of the story "Now I Lay Me" shows that, in rewriting the story, Hemingway developed his portrait of Nick Adams as a writer making up imaginary rivers to cope with the traumas of childhood and war. A chapter on "A Way You'll Never Be" focuses on how Hemingway's revisions developed crucial story elements-including Nick's interior monologues, manic lecture about grasshoppers, and wacky sense of humor-that showed the character restoring a sense of emotional balance despite his memories of being wounded in World War I. Subsequent chapters on "Fathers and Sons," "Indian Camp," "Hills Like White Elephants," "The Gambler, the Nun, and the Radio," and the concluding chapter, in part focused on drafts of "The Snows of Kilimanjaro," offer new discussions of the author's process of revision based on his manuscripts and typescripts published in the Hemingway Library Edition. In the end, by drawing attention to the meticulous edits, additions, and deletions that helped shape these texts, Beall reveals how extensively and richly Hemingway revised his drafts while composing some of his most powerful short fiction. Hemingway's Art of Revision gives a detailed view of a great prose stylist at work"--

Book INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS

Download or read book INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS written by SANJAY MISRA and published by PHI Learning Pvt. Ltd.. This book was released on 2009-01-30 with total page 301 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Today, with the pervasive impact of globalization and liberalization sweeping across the globe, exerting its influence on both the developed and the developing nations, business is no more confined to the national borders of a country. More and more companies are spreading their business to markets abroad (for example, Tata Consultancy Services and Infosys Technologies spreading their business to USA and elsewhere) or acquiring new companies (for instance, Tata acquiring the Corus and the Land Rover and Jaguar, or reversely, Vodafone acquiring Hutch). International business, therefore, has become such an important area of study for students of management and commerce. This comprehensive and easy-to-read text tries to lay bare the ramifications and complexities of international business. Divided into six sections, the book provides a harmonious blend of concepts and applications of international business. What distinguishes the text is the emphasis it lays on the Indian cases and the Indian scenario through the provision of many cases and illustrative examples. However, the book goes beyond the Indian context by giving international cases, thus imbuing the text with a global business flavour. Key Features  The case studies discussed include the cases such as Tata Motors, Hindustan Unilever, Ranbaxy, McDonald, Nokia, Microsoft and Walt Disney.  The opening case in each chapter introduces the students to a real-life example, followed by the text which provides the theoretical knowledge on the subject. The concluding case study correlates the theoretical knowledge with the real-life situation.  Review questions are cited after every case study to check students’ comprehension of the subject. Primarily intended as a text for undergraduate and postgraduate students of Business Administration, MBA, MIB and postgraduate students of Commerce, the book would be of great value also to practising managers.

Book City That Never Sleeps

Download or read book City That Never Sleeps written by Murray Pomerance and published by Rutgers University Press. This book was released on 2007-05-01 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: New York, more than any other city, has held a special fascination for filmmakers and viewers. In every decade of Hollywood filmmaking, artists of the screen have fixated upon this fascinating place for its tensions and promises, dazzling illumination and fearsome darkness. The glittering skyscrapers of such films as On the Town have shadowed the characteristic seedy streets in which desperate, passionate stories have played out-as in Scandal Sheet and The Pawnbroker. In other films, the city is a cauldron of bright lights, technology, empire, egotism, fear, hunger, and change--the scenic epitome of America in the modern age. From Street Scene and Breakfast at Tiffany's to Rosemary's Baby, The Warriors, and 25th Hour, the sixteen essays in this book explore the cinematic representation of New York as a city of experience, as a locus of ideographic characters and spaces, as a city of moves and traps, and as a site of allurement and danger. Contributors consider the work of Woody Allen, Blake Edwards, Alfred Hitchcock, Gregory La Cava, Spike Lee, Sidney Lumet, Vincente Minnelli, Roman Polanski, Martin Scorsese, Andy Warhol, and numerous others.

Book Three Dog Nightmare

Download or read book Three Dog Nightmare written by Chuck Negron and published by Renaissance Books. This book was released on 2000-07-14 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I lay there shaking like a Vegematic and sweating through the blankets. I prayed, "Please let me die or give me one minute of peace from this sickness." Then it happened. I knew then, and I still know now, that God did something for me that I could not do for myself. It was a gift. I was weak, alone, desperate, dying, and afraid. I surrendered. I prayed. He saved me. That's the only way I can explain what for me was the beginning of a miracle. Three Dog Nightmare is the autobiography of Chuck Negron, and it is the story of one of the most successful rock groups ever, Three Dog Night. But unlike so many rock bios, this is much more than a self-indulgent paean to sex, drugs, and rock 'n' roll. Three Dog Nightmare is a profoundly moral tale, an inspiring story of recovery and resurrection. But without a fall, there can be no resurrection. Few have fallen as hard, or as low. And even though we know the outcome, even though we know that he survived, Chuck Negron's is a story that seems at times almost too painful to read in its devastatingly sad portrayal of wasted talent, ruined chances, and burned lives. I shoved drugs into my system like a little kid eating candy. And in the end, it took away everything: my money, my fame, my wives, my children, and my self-respect. I traded a Mediterranean-style villa in the Hollywood Hills for a corner of an abandoned building where I slept on a filthy mattress I found in a vacant lot. That he survived at all is a miracle; that he has his career back on track and a new life devoted to helping other drug abusers is an inspiration.
