Book Night Owl Fighter Pilot

Download or read book Night Owl Fighter Pilot written by Val Ross Johnson and published by . This book was released on 2006-11 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a true story about 100 day and night missions over North Vietnam from Ubon, Thailand, during March 6, to August 28, 1966. We were the main Air Force fighter squadron flying night missions over North Vietnam. I related my personal feelings about every mission with the exact dates and mission results from my daily notes. I explained how we operated from a small airfield and described the physical appearance of the base. I read the current magazines from the States and then compared those comments to our actual mission results. I also provided my personal background about growing up in Northern Idaho and attending the University of Idaho. I explained the training required to become a fighter pilot and selecting my first assignment to fly the F-102 fighter interceptor. Our fighter squadron was later ordered from Torrejon, AB, Spain, to become part of the 8th Tactical Fighter Wing at George, AFB, California. We received new F-4C Phantom II fighters in 1965 and became one of the first fighter units sent to the Vietnam war. I detailed all the training that we received and how I later discovered that it did not prepare us for war.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ONE OF BRITAIN’S MOST DECORATED FIGHTER PILOTS TELLS HIS RIVETING TRUE STORY OF AERIAL COMBAT... Fast-paced, hard-hitting and personal, Wing Commander J. R. D. “Bob” Braham recounts his brilliant career as a World War II fighter pilot. Beginning with his pre-war training, he takes us battle-by-battle through that fateful afternoon in June, 1944, when he was shot down over occupied Denmark and taken prisoner. From the desperate night-time sorties against the Luftwaffe’s air strikes during the Battle of Britain to the daring daylight intruder raids against Hitler’s crumbling Reich, his story reveals the skill, courage and teamwork between pilot and navigator that made him one of the RAF’s most deadly fighter pilots. “HE’S 400 YARDS DEAD AHEAD!” Suddenly there he was as clear as could be—twin engines, twin tail, our opposite number, an Me110 night-fighter. He was turning gently to port. I climbed back to 16,000 feet, heading again towards Ameland. Before we had straightened out Jacko called urgently: “Hard starboard!” I hauled the Beau round in a tight turn when Jacko called, Look out, you’re closing too fast!” “I’ve got him,” I yelled. He was above me, in a tight turn, and at the speed we were travelling we looked as if we were going to ram him. I eased back the stick, put the sights on him and fired at the point-blank range of about fifty yards. There was a blinding flash as the Me exploded in my face.

Book Fluttering Leaves and the Fighter Pilot

Download or read book Fluttering Leaves and the Fighter Pilot written by Colonel William D. Garner Ph.D. and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2021-07-19 with total page 508 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book contains inspirational messages coming from the grassroots of a life well lived. It holds up the possibility of achievement by anyone, regardless of their beginning. Bill Garner was a painfully naïve country kid. He lacked career guidance but had an abundance of ambition. He pursued, with consuming vigor, a vision of what his life might be and came to realize his vision during a long life of successful endeavors. This is a how to guide to success in challenging times. Bill shares many lessons he learned along the way and offers a personal philosophy of life that others might adopt for their own lifelong benefit. He is a gifted writer. You will gallop with him through terrifying pony rides that end in no imaginable measure of glory; rather, in huge crushing disappointments. You will be transported to the complex cockpit of a Mach 2 fighter aircraft as you accompany him on harrowing missions in the black of night and driving rain during the Monsoon Season of Southeast Asia. Soaring tens of thousands of feet above the hostile terrain of North Vietnam and Laos, you will ride through in-flight refueling while connected perilously to a KC-135 flying gas station, soon thereafter to be shot at – and too often hit – by some of the most accurate and deadly antiaircraft artillery gunners the world has ever known. Following combat, he advanced through several assignments in Europe before attending the Air War College, en route to the Pentagon, his last assignment. He retired from the Air Force after 26 years of active duty. Bill shares his experiences in the two later careers of health services management and real estate. You will witness his innovative successes as he builds new and diversified programs and makes existing ones better.

Book USAF McDonnell Douglas F 4 Phantom II

Download or read book USAF McDonnell Douglas F 4 Phantom II written by Peter E. Davies and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2013-04-20 with total page 67 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In many respects the most successful, versatile and widely-used combat aircraft of the post-war era the F-4 Phantom II was quickly adopted by the USAF after its spectacular US Navy introduction. Its introduction to USAF squadrons happened just in time for the Vietnam conflict where USAF F-4Cs took over MiG-fighting duties from the F-100 Super Sabre. Although the F-4 was never intended as a dog-fighter to tangle with light, nimble, gun-armed MiGs it was responsible for destroying 109 MiGs in aerial combat. At the end of their careers many of the survivors from the 3,380 'land-based' Phantoms were converted into target drones for training purposes. New aircraft were also built for West Germany, Iran and Israel. The USAF's experience with the Phantom showed clearly that the air-to-air fighter was still a necessity and its decision to fund its successor, the McDonnell-Douglas F-15 Eagle (as well as the F-16 Fighting Falcon and F-22A Raptor) was heavily influenced by the lessons of US and other Phantom pilots in combat.

Book excerpt: Take someone with superior intelligence, unusual strength, perfect vision, catlike reflexes, exceptional marksmanship, and nerves of steel – and you just might have what it takes. The fighter pilot had total control of an airborne vehicle traveling hundreds of miles an hour, and was capable of leaving a devastating path of destruction in his wake. Navigating with brains and stamina, making life-or-death decisions in the blink of an eye, these unique heroes succeeded or failed by their skill and wit. And although their planes have changed over the years – from World War I’s precarious contraptions made of wood, wire, and cloth; to the metal monsters of the second World War, and finally to sleek, computerized birds able to cruise at speeds that exceed Mach 1 – fighter pilots still must out-think and out-fly opponents in a one-on-one contest where everything is at stake. Profusely illustrated throughout with action photos, paintings, memorabilia and mementoes, Lone Eagle is a vivid volume recalling the thrill of flying Spitfires, Phantoms, Zeroes, and other fighter planes throughout aviation history. Through engaging personal stories and remembrances, this book examines the combat missions and evolution of tactics gathered over the last 70 years, where every hour of every day was an unforgettable and marvelous experience.
