Book Night butterflies of the silver screen

Download or read book Night butterflies of the silver screen written by Artur Friedberg and published by New Generation Publishing. This book was released on 2015-06-07 with total page 193 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At the first glance the novel could have been classified as a thriller, with suspense and sensual plot that at least partly is set in an environment of soft porno movie production in London, at the time of end of 1980s, including elements of mafia and IRA activities. Nonetheless, there was cleverly 'smuggled' a great deal of information about the work of cameraman, as well as of director while rehearsing with the actors or carrying out shooting of the movie. Further on, it entertains with real and anecdotic information about the cinematic environment. Besides, the novel is bringing a spectrum of information about writing a script for a historical movie and development of the concept of its realization. While doing so, it is also building up a reflective view over 15s century French poet Francois Villon; his personality and highly original oeuvre. The main thread of the contemporary action of the novel drifts towards the historical one, and in a way, they become tragically connected.

Download or read book In Arabian Nights written by Tahir Shah and published by Bantam. This book was released on 2007-12-26 with total page 400 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tahir Shah’s The Caliph’s House, describing his first year in Casablanca, was hailed by critics and compared to such travel classics as A Year in Provence and Under the Tuscan Sun. Now Shah takes us deeper into the heart of this exotic and magical land to uncover mysteries that have been hidden from Western eyes for centuries.… In this entertaining and penetrating book, Tahir sets out on a bold new journey across Morocco that becomes an adventure worthy of the mythical Arabian Nights. As he wends his way through the labyrinthine medinas of Fez and Marrakesh, traverses the Sahara sands, and tastes the hospitality of ordinary Moroccans, Tahir collects a dazzling treasury of traditional stories, gleaned from the heritage of A Thousand and One Nights. The tales, recounted by a vivid cast of characters, reveal fragments of wisdom and an oriental way of thinking that is both enthralling and fresh. A link in the chain of scholars and teachers who have passed these stories down for centuries like a baton in a relay race, Shah reaches layers of culture that most visitors hardly realize exist, and eventually discovers the story living in his own heart. Along the way he describes the colors, characters, and the passion of Morocco, and comes to understand why it is such an enchanting land. From master masons who labor only at night to Sufi wise men who write for soap operas, and Tuareg guides afflicted by reality TV, In Arabian Nights takes us on an unforgettable journey, shining a light on facets of a society that are normally left in darkness.

Book The Hispanic Image on the Silver Screen

Download or read book The Hispanic Image on the Silver Screen written by Alfred Charles Richard and published by Greenwood. This book was released on 1992-06-30 with total page 636 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first collection of more than 1,800 films dealing with Hispanic topics, themes, and characters arranged chronologically from 1898 to 1935, with indepth annotations, cross-references and four separate indexes. This is a study of Hollywood's treatment of Hispanics worldwide, those living in South, Central and North America, the Philippines and Spain. Employing a historical framework, the author has organized the work for those interested in assessing the effects that motion pictures have had on the viewing public in establishing and perpetuating accepted stereotypes. The role of censorship, the Production Code Administration, the Motion Picture Society of the Americas, the Latin American market, and Hollywood's version of Hispanic history are fully covered. The Black Legend of Hispanic barbarity has existed in literature since the sixteenth century. The early film makers, and later Hollywood, merely transferred the Black Legend to the silver screen and continued the accepted point of view created since the first conflict between England and Spain for supremacy in the Caribbean. This work also shows the relationship between film and foreign policy, how films have frequently justified and glorified North American intervention in the affairs of the Latin nations throughout the Americas. Each entry includes a brief scenario which details the film's Hispanic connection: a stereotype, a historic interpretation, a specific nation, associated behavior or attitudes, a list of the Hispanic actors and actresses. Reviews, bibliographic citations and archival locations are provided.

Up until a few weeks ago, light flirtatious banter was all that was between us. One-sided flirting - my side. But it worked. We worked. Then the busy-body Quylt sisters paired us together to volunteer. Planning local senior citizen events, of all things. Who would’ve thought by the end of the first event we’d be naked in the theater dressing room, and she’d be screaming out my name? Not me. She’s got rules about guys like me. Rules I respect. But I’ve always been a rule breaking kinda guy. Four events. Four weeks. And we’ll be back to normal. That’s what I keep telling myself. But now that I’ve had her, I want her to be all mine.

Book The Diving Bell and the Butterfly

Download or read book The Diving Bell and the Butterfly written by Jean-Dominique Bauby and published by Vintage. This book was released on 2008-03-06 with total page 146 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A triumphant memoir by the former editor-in-chief of French Elle that reveals an indomitable spirit and celebrates the liberating power of consciousness. In 1995, Jean-Dominique Bauby was the editor-in-chief of French Elle, the father of two young children, a 44-year-old man known and loved for his wit, his style, and his impassioned approach to life. By the end of the year he was also the victim of a rare kind of stroke to the brainstem. After 20 days in a coma, Bauby awoke into a body which had all but stopped working: only his left eye functioned, allowing him to see and, by blinking it, to make clear that his mind was unimpaired. Almost miraculously, he was soon able to express himself in the richest detail: dictating a word at a time, blinking to select each letter as the alphabet was recited to him slowly, over and over again. In the same way, he was able eventually to compose this extraordinary book. By turns wistful, mischievous, angry, and witty, Bauby bears witness to his determination to live as fully in his mind as he had been able to do in his body. He explains the joy, and deep sadness, of seeing his children and of hearing his aged father's voice on the phone. In magical sequences, he imagines traveling to other places and times and of lying next to the woman he loves. Fed only intravenously, he imagines preparing and tasting the full flavor of delectable dishes. Again and again he returns to an "inexhaustible reservoir of sensations," keeping in touch with himself and the life around him. Jean-Dominique Bauby died two days after the French publication of The Diving Bell and the Butterfly. This book is a lasting testament to his life.
