Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An engrossing autobiographical exploration of black masculinity as a mode of racial and verbal performance. In Your Average Nigga, Vershawn Ashanti Young disputes the belief that speaking Standard English and giving up Black English Vernacular helps black students succeed academically. Young argues that this assumption not only exaggerates the differences between two compatible varieties of English but forces black males to choose between an education and their masculinity, by choosing to act either white or black. As one would expect from a scholar who is subject to the very circumstances he studies, Young shares his own experiences as he exposes the factors that make black racial identity irreconcilable with literacy for blacks, especially black males. Drawing on a range of interdisciplinary scholarship in performance theory and African American literary and cultural studies, Young shows that the linguistic conflict that exists between black and white language styles harms black students from the inner city the most. If these students choose to speak Standard English they risk alienating themselves from their families and communities, and if they choose to retain their customary speech and behavior they may isolate themselves from mainstream society. Young argues that this conflict leaves blacks in the impossible position of either trying to be white or forever struggling to prove that they are black enough. For men, this also becomes an endless struggle to prove that they are masculine enough. Young calls this constant effort to display proper masculine and racial identity the burden of racial performance. Ultimately, Young argues that racial and verbal performances are a burden because they cannot reduce the causes or effects of racism, nor can they denaturalize supposedly fixed identity categories, as many theorists contend. On the contrary, racial and verbal performances only reinscribe the essentialism that they are believed to subvert. Scholars and teachers of rhetoric, performance studies, and African American studies will enjoy this insightful volume.

Book Tablets from the Iri sa rig Archive

Download or read book Tablets from the Iri sa rig Archive written by Marcel Sigrist and published by Penn State Press. This book was released on 2021-06-21 with total page 329 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While each of the previously known archives from the Third Dynasty of Ur has provided distinct views of Sumerian society, those from Iri-Saĝrig present an extraordinary range of new sources, depicting a cosmopolitan Sumerian/Akkadian city unlike any other from this period. In this publication, Marcel Sigrist and Tohru Ozaki present more than two thousand newly identified tablets, mostly from Iri-Saĝrig. This unique and extensive corpus elucidates the importance that Iri-Saĝrig represented politically, militarily, and culturally in Sumer. Although these tablets were not able to be cleaned, baked, or photographed, the authors’ transliterations are based on the original tablets, often after repeated collations. Moreover, access to so many well-preserved tablets made it possible to improve upon the readings and interpretations offered in previous publications. Volume 1 contains a catalog and classification of the texts by provenance, a list of month names and year formulas, another of inscriptions, a chronological listing of the texts, and extensive indexes of personal names, deities, toponyms, and selected words and phrases. Volume 2 presents the texts in transliteration with substantial commentary. This two-volume publication preserves and makes available to the scholarly community a significant segment of Iraq’s cultural legacy that otherwise might have been ignored or even lost. It will augment and enhance our understanding of the unique civilization of Mesopotamia in the late third millennium BCE.

Then this book is for you. This teacher was the student council advisor for the school and a true lover of the theater who went to the theater often and exposed her students to the theater by helping them raise money in many ways to bring a performing arts traveling theater company of a local college to the school. When this college lost their funding and could no longer travel to perform for the various schools in the area, the children in this school asked their advisor to organize their very own theater group for the school. Well, this teacher told them in no uncertain terms that she knew absolutely nothing about acting and would not even know how to begin a drama program. Well, the children convinced this teacher to at least try. So she did. This book shows how this teacher through her friends and family members who knew people who knew theatrical people who guided her and showed her how she really could organize a real drama program for her school. This book shows the elementary teacher how to teach the children to write their own script from their favorite book in their library. Then eventually write their own version of popular stories such as "The Wizard of Oz". It also shows the teacher how to organize the parents of the students into the essential needs of a drama club by assessing the various talents of the parents and interested members of the faculty. This book also shows the drama teacher how to introduce to the students various improvisations and exercises for developing acting skills. It also includes the scripts and directions for nine different plays, including suggested music, all suitable for elementary students. In other words, it is a book of how an elementary teacher went from having no theatrical experience to how she was able to organize a very successful drama club, that was invited to perform for the D.A.R.E. conference and the governor at the capitol building in Sacramento, California.

Book excerpt: A renowned cultural critic untangles the twisted history and future of racism through its most volatile word. The N Word reveals how the term “nigger” has both reflected and spread the scourge of bigotry in America over the four hundred years since it was first spoken on our shores. Jabari Asim pinpoints Thomas Jefferson as the source of our enduring image of the “nigger.” In a seminal but now obscure essay, Jefferson marshaled a welter of pseudoscience to define the stereotype of a shiftless child-man with huge appetites and stunted self-control. Asim reveals how nineteenth-century “science” then colluded with popular culture to amplify this slander. What began as false generalizations became institutionalized in every corner of our society: the arts and sciences, sports, the law, and on the streets. Asim’s conclusion is as original as his premise. He argues that even when uttered with the opposite intent by hipsters and hip-hop icons, the slur helps keep blacks at the bottom of America’s socioeconomic ladder. But Asim also proves there is a place for the word in the mouths and on the pens of those who truly understand its twisted history—from Mark Twain to Dave Chappelle to Mos Def. Only when we know its legacy can we loosen this slur’s grip on our national psyche.
