Book excerpt: Originally written and published in 1910, Dennett's study of the Yoruba is designed to provide a clear and intelligble description of the beliefs and values which underlie traditional practices and customs among this Nigerian tribe. It seeks to provide an account of the religious institutions that are found in Yorubaland, and to relate these to some aspects of the political and economic life of the Yorubas. The book is based on information which the author collected from informants while in Nigeria, as well as on some of the first written material produced by Nigerian scholars themselves in the first decade of this century. Dennett's study provies a valuable source of oral tradition, which he recorded meticulously, and a fascinating insight into the early attempts to describe and categorise African systems of thought.

Book Nigerian Studies Or the Religious and Political System of the Yoruba Classic Reprint

This book was released on 2016-08-26 with total page 278 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Nigerian Studies, or the Religious and Political System of the Yoruba Administrators and missionaries are often blamed for adopting methods of administration or evangelising which we all know are not suited to the uplifting of the negro race. Destructive criticism of such methods is easy, and in this case, where both parties have sincerely done their best, quite unnecessary. The construction of a correct native policy is much harder to build up, and it is a question whether we yet have sufficient data to work with any certainty. I have been very much struck with Dr. Arthur Keith's first series of Hunterian lectures on the Anatomy and Relationships of the Negro and Negroid Races. There he expresses the opinion that before further progress can be made in anthropological investigation it will be necessary to revise our methods, substitut ing for the present empirical measurements others founded on a more certain and scientific basis. In the following pages I have approached the study of the native from a philosophical (in the old-fashioned sense of the word) point of view. • Publisher : Bookcraft, Nigeria

Download or read book A Living Tradition written by L. J. Munoz and published by Bookcraft, Nigeria. This book was released on 2003 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection of essays, written during the last couple of decades on Yoruba cultural heritage, brings together a wealth of material on Yoruba history, art, and institutions within a framework of writing on the phenomenon, history and sociology of tradition. The essays demonstrate a strong philosophical context, and new insights into the nature and behavior of the Yoruba tradition. A main theme is that there is no antithesis between tradition and modernity and that to examine how the Yoruba synthesize tradition and modernity is a useful way to understand how their society functions and changes. The author further brings perspectives to current concerns about why there is at present a resurgence of violent ethnic clashes. He reflects on the divisiveness of violent conflicts arising from tribalism and ethnic consciousness, illustrating how these need not be a threat to Nigerian unity, and considers roles of traditional authorities in modern political structures.
