Book Democracy and Sustainable Development in Nigeria

Download or read book Democracy and Sustainable Development in Nigeria written by Akudo Chinedu Ojoh and published by GRIN Verlag. This book was released on 2012-03 with total page 81 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Research Paper (undergraduate) from the year 2008 in the subject Politics - International Politics - Topic: Development Politics, grade: none, University of Jaume I, language: English, abstract: In contemporary time, democracy has turned out to be the most supported political tool for development and social change, which has attained near global acclaim and admiration by many world leaders. Although it is contestable, the reasons for this vary. First, democracy has gained acceptability as a form of government based on equity and justice. Secondly, it purports to uphold the rule of law, and as well, guarantee the preservation of human rights. As it is assumed that effective strategies adopted and properly implemented by a nation have the tendency to accelerate progress in the development of the said nation, this work examined some strategies for sustainable development in Nigeria. It highlighted existing strategies for development in the country, examined progress and challenges in implementing the strategies, and further identified measures which when adopted and implemented, will likely change the social, economic, and political condition of the country for economic growth and sustainable development.

Book Energy Law and the Sustainable Development Goals

Download or read book Energy Law and the Sustainable Development Goals written by Eduardo G Pereira and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2024-05-07 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The UN Sustainable Development Goals are an ambitious agenda for environmental sustainability, economic development, and social transformation. The SDGs include targets for governments, in partnership with private industry and communities, to improve access to affordable and reliable energy, reduce inequality, protect natural resources, and invest in transparent legal institutions and resilient infrastructure. Although transitioning energy systems towards a low-carbon future is a core aspect of the SDGs, the International Energy Agency anticipates that oil and gas will remain a significant component of the global energy mix for some time. Host Government Instruments are tools which governments use to grant oil and gas companies permission to develop state-owned resources. In addition to bringing substantial resources into governments, these HGIs often also include environmental commitments as well as commitments to local hiring, stakeholder engagement, and investment in economic development programmes. The different structures of HGIs and their precise terms and conditions are crucial determinants of the sustainability of oil and gas operations conducted thereunder. This book addresses how governments can use HGIs to advance the SDGs. Part I introduces the SDGs and the legal institutions and governance related to HGIs, including in relation to international energy development, international environmental treaties, the Paris Agreement, and human rights regimes. Part II examines specific provisions within HGIs and regulatory systems which relate to the oil and gas sector and SDGs. It provides case studies to illustrate approaches to HGIs and to identify opportunities for host governments and international oil and gas companies to advance the SDGs. The book concludes with a summary of recommendations regarding how host governments, in partnership with the oil and gas industry, can use HGIs to advance economic development and sustainability goals, and advances potential insights towards development of new and renewable resources.

Book Good Governance Constitutionalism and the Rule of Law

Download or read book Good Governance Constitutionalism and the Rule of Law written by Adeejat-Kubra Kolawole and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Constitutionalism, rule of law and good governance have remained topical and recurring issues in the discourse about African states. The ideals of those concepts however seem to have been continually and continuously been flouted by most African states. Some scholars have argued that the ideal of good governance has continued to elude most states of African descent because of the twin problems of endemic corruption and basic departure from the rule of law and constitutionalism. Thus African states have been accused of having "constitutions without the spirit of constitutionalism", of having laws without respect for the rule of law and of "creating poverty out of God given wealth" due to lack of good governance. In the last one decade and a half there has been a growing consciousness for the enthronement of these ideals as they have been recognized as the necessary pre-requisites for the attainment of an overall human and capital development and growth of a nation-ideals which are much more needed in developing nations. Through the instrumentality of the African Union (AU) certain laws and initiatives have been put in place such as the AU Charter on Democracy, Elections and Good Governance (giving set guidelines for the conduct of elections) and the African Peer Review Mechanism (APRM) initiative of New Partnership for African Development (NEPAD) designed to monitor governments of African states in all the realms of their governance activities (the executive, legislative and judiciary). In the West African sub region there is the Economic Communities of West African States (ECOWAS) Protocol on Democracy and Good Governance geared towards the same goal. These have been acclaimed as good steps in the right direction of achieving good governance in the African continent and the West African sub region respectively. Nigeria is an African nation and in particular, a member of ECOWAS. This paper examines the tripartite concepts of constitutionalism, rule of law and good governance in Africa taking Nigeria as the case study. It argues that there is a link between these three concepts as they will continue to be the indices by which the Nigerian nation will be measured in terms of their development not only in terms of economic or capital growth but also in the areas of human development and political well-being. The paper argues that although the current efforts of the Nigerian government towards the eradication of endemic corruption (stemming from lack of respect for the rule of law) and the establishment of machineries for good governance are efforts geared towards achieving sustainable development in the country; the activities of certain government agencies in Nigeria belie the goal. Taking a few case studies from the Nigerian experience, it posits that the continuing lack of respect for the rule of law and constitutionalism in Nigeria are the greatest impediments to the attainment of sustainable development in Nigeria. The paper therefore makes some suggestions for policy implications towards the achievement of the overarching goal of sustainable development in Nigeria.

Book Implementing the Sustainable Development Goals in Nigeria

Download or read book Implementing the Sustainable Development Goals in Nigeria written by Eghosa O. Ekhator and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-10-11 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores Nigeria’s progress towards achieving the Sustainable Development Goals, presenting key country-specific lessons, as well as providing innovative solutions and practices which are transferrable to other emerging economies. Despite all of Nigeria’s potential, and substantial oil revenues, poverty remains widespread and the country faces many challenges. The contributors to this book provide comparative historical and contemporary analysis of the main challenges for achieving progress in the SDGs, and make recommendations for the most effectives ways of developing, adopting, disseminating and scaling them. Starting with the conceptualisation and evolution of the SDGs, the book goes on to consider the goal on ending poverty, and the urgent need to combat climate change and its impacts. The book also reflects on the role of business and taxation, and the cultural and societal dimensions of the SDGs, including education, gender, and the role of the church. Overall, the book focuses on knowledge/implementation gaps and the role of collaborative partnerships and disruptive technologies in implementing the framework in general. This book will be of interest to scholars, policy makers and practitioners of sustainable development and African studies, as well as those with a particular interest in Nigeria.

Book Promoting Sustainable Development in Nigeria Through Rural Women s Participation in Decision Making About Renewable Energy Law and Policy

Download or read book Promoting Sustainable Development in Nigeria Through Rural Women s Participation in Decision Making About Renewable Energy Law and Policy written by Uchenna Ijoma and published by . This book was released on 2021 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "[T]o devise development planning without the participation of [rural] women is like using four fingers when you have ten." Both lack of access to energy and climate change threatens poverty reduction and sustainable development in Nigeria. Most poor communities in Africa use inadequate fuels and are highly vulnerable to the impacts of climate change, with women bearing most of the social, economic, and environmental costs. Promoting access to affordable and sustainable energy through policy interventions is one crucial path to achieving sustainable development. Renewable energy offers countries the opportunity to meet the energy demands of the poorest and most vulnerable in each society, and thereby achieve many of the sustainable development goals, such as: hunger and poverty eradication, gender equity, affordable and clean energy, climate action, and maternal health. The Nigerian government is constantly formulating legal frameworks for renewable energy to expand the availability of energy (including electricity) to rural areas while reducing the impacts of climate change. Yet the extent to which these legal frameworks will be implemented successfully remain in doubt; as to date, Nigeria has been unable to achieve its stated goal of sustainable development. Why are renewable energy policies and laws in Nigeria not succeeding? This thesis asks whether one reason may be that Nigerian women living in rural areas have little role in both designing renewable energy laws and policies and participating in their effective implementation. This is a problem given that rural women are the primary users of unsustainable energy, they suffer most from its negative impacts, they are the main beneficiaries of rural electrification, and the closest to the needs and capacities of the population in rural communities. This thesis is mainly qualitative. Multiple approaches (feminist historical research, documentary or doctrinal analysis as well as analysis by specific illustrative examples) were used to explore the phenomenon of why the Nigerian government's concerted efforts at developing the legal frameworks for renewable energy have not yielded their desired goals of promoting sustainable development, and what lessons could be learned from South Africa. In addition to contributing to the gender and renewable energy literature, the research attempts to develop a blueprint for inclusive approaches to renewable energy law. It investigates how renewable energy legal and institutional frameworks could effectively include rural women. Using ideas from feminist legal theorists, the thesis makes a case for why rural women should be considered suitable stakeholder participants. It concludes that renewable energy policy- and law-making processes which consider the voices and active participation of rural women could encourage an increase in the generation, distribution, and use of renewable energy in the poorest inaccessible areas while closing the gap between renewable energy policies and laws, and sustainable development. Finally, it recommends that renewable energy policies and laws should increase rural women's participation by using among other things "recognition politics," which allows for the representation of subordinate social groups in bodies such as Parliaments; for example, by using measures such as mandatory affirmative action - quota system clauses, and techniques such as"Taking Parliament to the People."

Book Relevance of Wagner s Hypothesis in Achieving Sustainable Development Agenda in Nigeria

Download or read book Relevance of Wagner s Hypothesis in Achieving Sustainable Development Agenda in Nigeria written by Isiaq O. Oseni and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Policy ambiguity in the form of non-directional and non-purposeful use of state resources has made sustainable growth outcomes a mirage in Nigeria. Recent economic crisis prompted the debate on how increased government spending induces sustainable economic growth in Nigeria. This paper examines the validity or otherwise of Wagner's theory in Nigeria for the realisation of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) from 1980 through 2017. Using time-series data on real gross domestic product, total government expenditure, money supply and domestic investment and adopting the two-step Engle and Granger estimation procedure, result shows that increased government spending significantly predicts variations in real gross domestic product and thus leaned empirical credence to Wagner's hypothesis as an essential concept for the attainment of Sustainable Development Goals in Nigeria. This paper recommended that the government should exhaust all possible options to increase expenditure in order to realise sustainable growth in Nigeria.

Book The Legislature in Nigeria s Presidential Democracy of the Fourth Republic

Download or read book The Legislature in Nigeria s Presidential Democracy of the Fourth Republic written by Omololu Fagbadebo and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2023-03-20 with total page 270 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book investigates whether legislative institutions, state and national, in Nigeria’s Fourth Republic have been able to harness constitutional powers to impact public policy. Presenting how the Nigerian state has not been able to showcase the expected dividends of presidential democracy since 1999, it analyzes the crisis of governance and its impact on political stability, social cohesion, and the livelihood of citizens. The book further discusses the depreciating infrastructure, corruption, and mismanagement of public resources, and shows how defiant attitudes of public political and bureaucratic officials define the new wave of corruption and profligacy in Nigeria, presenting this development as a result of a weakened legislature. The book displays the necessity of implementing a culture of accountability and discusses oversight mechanisms to make the executive accountable. These mechanisms are designed to ensure effective public service delivery. Finally, the book situates the legislative institutions in Nigeria within the context of the contributions of the National Assembly and the Assemblies of the State Houses to the development of this emerging democracy in Africa. The book will appeal to students and scholars of political science and public administration, as well as policy-makers and practitioners interested in a better understanding of democracy, separation of powers, governance, and Nigerian politics.
