Book Nigerian Foreign Policy under Military Rule 1966 1999

Download or read book Nigerian Foreign Policy under Military Rule 1966 1999 written by Olayiwola Abegunrin and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2003-02-28 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abegunrin provides a significant and comprenhensive examination of Nigerian foreign policy (1966-1999) during the almost 33 years of military rule, punctuated by the four-year civilian interregnum, 1979-1983. He analyzes what led to the military rule in 1966, and the foreign policy performance of each military regime that ruled the country since 1966. He also discusses extensively the economic dimension of the nation's foreign policy. He shows that the last 15 years, the period of Generals Babangida and Abacha, were the most corrupt and brutal that Nigeria had seen since independence. The mysterious sudden death of General Sani Abacha led to the appointment of General Abubakar, who handed power over to an elected civilian government in May 1999, led by President Olusegun Obasanjo. Of particular interest to scholars, students, and other researchers involved with African politics and foreign policy and the role of the military in politial affairs.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nigeria has experienced different forms of crises and instability since she became independent on October 1 1960. The country has also been under different forms of rule - from the Westminster system of parliamentary democracy in the First Republic (1960-1966),to prolonged periods of military rule (1966-1979, 1983-1999) to a presidential system of governance (1979-1983, 1999-present). During these periods, there have been several contentious issues that appear to permanently put the country on the precipice. In this collection of essays, Isawa Elaigwu, a professor emeritus of political science reflects on the country's painful political experiences, arguing that it is necessary for Nigerians to understand the past and actively participate in the present in order to create a brighter future for the country. The essays in the book therefore serve as the links between the country's yesterday and today as foundations for the future.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Nigerian Army is an institution that has played a pivotal role in the affairs of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. For more than half of the 57 years since Independence, Nigeria was directly ruled by a Military Government, largely composed of army officers, and always headed by one. It is impossible to explore any facet of modern Nigerian history or society without the military (and in particular the Army) looming significantly. Whilst several authors have documented the history of Nigeria (and significantly less many of its Army), rarely, if ever, has the impact of the politics of Nigeria on the Army, and vice-versa, formed the exclusive subject of study. This volume is an endeavor to fill that gap. The period leading up to the Army's first overt entry into the politics of Nigeria is reviewed, firstly the pre-Independence period, and then the years immediately following independence. The effects of the Nigerianisation of the Army, especially of the officer corps, and of the policy decisions made following the passing of control over the Army from the British to the Nigerian Government are considered. The political circumstances surrounding the Army's first overt entry into politics - the January 1966 coup - and the political performance of the subsequent first military regime are discussed, as a precursor to the second coup in July 1966. The impact of the Army's direct involvement in politics on the military performance of both sides in the Civil War is explored. After a nine-year interregnum, in July 1975 Nigeria returned to the era of coups, with at least eight attempted and successful coups, some of them bloody, over the next quarter century before the return to civilian rule in 1999. The personalities leading the resultant military Governments, and the policies of those Governments, are explored, in an attempt to discern their legacy on the political development of Nigeria, and on the Nigerian Army as an institution.

Book The Nigerian Military and Democratic Transition

Download or read book The Nigerian Military and Democratic Transition written by Magnus Oduwa Osaghae and published by LAP Lambert Academic Publishing. This book was released on 2012 with total page 112 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Nigeria military took over the political terrain in January 1966 accusing the First Republic politicians of corruption and mismanagement. The foundation of governance created in Nigeria politics during 1960 to 1966 was a reflection of ethnicity, political corruption, questionable national security, maladministration, prejudice, improper representation, confusing state of policy propagation, and a drifting nation in overview. The inability for the civilian government of Tafawa Belewa to conduct a free and fair election to transit to another civil rule created the avenue for military in Nigerian politics.

This book was released on 2003 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is an effort to condense the totality of Nigeria's external relations and foreign policy, activities, accomplishments and shortcomings, during the thirty years of military rule 1966 to 1999 into a single volume. It intends to close a gap in the literature on this period; in which writers tended to concentrate on individual regimes and events, ignoring or glossing over the bigger picture. The work is organised chronologically. It begins with a section on the foundation, principles nd purposes of Nigerian foreign policy. It then discusses the Yakubu Gown period 1966-1975 in the context of domestic instability civil war and foreign policy. Chapters follow on the period of Murtala Muhammed 1975-1976, Obasanjo 1976-1979, and Nigeria as a new African power; Buhari, xenophobia and the beginning of isolation; the Babangida period and the new optimism; and the return to the dark times and international isolation with Sani Abacha. The final chapters consider the new civil beginnings in Nigeria since 1999, and offer an overall evaluation of the outcomes of military rule. The author is a specialist in international relations based at University of Ife, Nigeria.
