Book Contemporary Nigerian Female Playwrights

Download or read book Contemporary Nigerian Female Playwrights written by Ngozi Udengwu and published by LAP Lambert Academic Publishing. This book was released on 2012-08 with total page 572 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study examines the content and form of plays written by Nigerian female playwrights, in order to assess their contribution to women's struggle and determine how far their drama contradicts or ratifies the existing image of women in literature. The women whose plays are studied in this work include the pioneers - Sofola and Onwueme - and the emerging ones - Stella Oyedepo, Onyeka Onyekuba, Tracie Utoh-Ezeajugh, Irene Salami-Agunloye and Chinyere Okafor. Through a study of selected plays of each of the seven female playwrights, the work gives an analysis of the thematic preoccupations, ideological orientations, dramatic technique and style of both the pioneer and the emerging female playwrights in Nigeria. The work provides a comprehensive study of Nigerian female playwrights and therefore offers a forum for the discussion of women's plays in Nigeria. It equally makes possible a comparative analysis of the content and form of these women's drama as well as clarifies such issues as 'feminist aesthetics' and 'feminist theatre' in Nigeria.

Book Contemporary Plays by African Women

Download or read book Contemporary Plays by African Women written by Sophia Kwachuh Mempuh and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2019-01-24 with total page 345 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume uniquely draws together seven contemporary plays by a selection of the finest African women writers and practitioners from across the continent, offering a rich and diverse portrait of identity, politics, culture, gender issues and society in contemporary Africa. Niqabi Ninja by Sara Shaarawi (Egypt) is set in Cairo during the chaotic time of the Egyptian uprising. Not That Woman by Tosin Jobi-Tume (Nigeria) addresses issues of violence against women in Nigeria and its attendant conspiracy of silence. The play advocates zero-tolerance for violence against women and urges women to bury shame and speak out rather than suffer in silence. I Want To Fly by Thembelihle Moyo (Zimbabwe) tells the story of an African girl who wants to be a pilot. It looks at how patriarchal society shapes the thinking of men regarding lobola (bride price), how women endure abusive men and the role society at large plays in these issues. Silent Voices by Adong Judith (Uganda) is a one-act play based on interviews with people involved in the LRA and the effects of the civil war in Uganda. It critiques this, and by implication, other truth commissions. Unsettled by JC Niala (Kenya) deals with gender violence, land issues and relations of both black and white Kenyans living in, and returning to, the country. Mbuzeni by Koleka Putuma (South Africa) is a story of four female orphans, aged eight to twelve, their sisterhood and their fixation with death and burials. It explores the unseen force that governs and dictates the laws that the villagers live by. Bonganyi by Sophia Kwachuh Mempuh (Cameroon) depicts the effects of colonialism as told through the story of a slave girl: a singer and dancer, who wants to win a competition to free her family. Each play also includes a biography of the playwright, the writer's own artistic statement, a production history of the play and a critical contextualisation of the theatrical landscape from which each woman is writing.

Download or read book Nigerian Female Dramatists written by Bosede Funke Afolayan and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-03-17 with total page 286 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book showcases the important, but often understudied, work of Nigerian women playwrights. As in many spheres of life in Nigeria, in literature and other creative arts the voices of men dominate, and the work of women has often been sidelined. However, Nigerian women playwrights have made important contributions to the development of drama in Nigeria, not just by presenting female identities and inequalities but by vigorously intervening in wider social and political issues. This book draws on perspectives from culture, language, politics, theory, orality and literature, to shine a light on the engaged creativity of women playwrights. From the trail blazing but more traditional contributions of Zulu Sofola, through to contemporary postcolonial work by Tess Osonye Onwueme, Julie Okoh, and Sefi Atta, to name just a few, the book shows the rich variety of work being produced by female Nigerian dramatists. This, the first major collection devoted to Nigerian women playwrights, will be an important resource for scholars of African theatre and performance, literature and women’s studies.

Book excerpt: "Many books provide detailed analyses of the role and place of women in drama and theatre. However, very few of them undertake a scrutiny of a corpus of plays by a single dramatist. Female Empowerment and Dramatic Creativity in Nigeria came at a time when a lacuna had to be filled in terms of providing a vista into the works of Tess Omwueme..." -- Back cover

Despite the progress made worldwide, we continue to witness a reality in which gender issues generate injustice, lack of freedom and violation of human rights. Researchers constantly strive to analyze women phenomena and denounce its consequences in the attempt to achieve an egalitarian world in which differences are understood and respected. This book is one of the fruits of such efforts. Scholars interested in women's issues have joined in this volume in order to register, through their work, a commitment to progress towards a better society. With this work, the authors attempt to promote the voice of women who, even in the twenty-first century, feel deprived of their well-deserved security. At the same time, they attempt not only to keep alive the awareness about women's situation, but also create an academic meeting point that shows the most current areas of research around women's issue. Through this collaboration, the authors hope to achieve a review of contemporary approaches to women's studies. It is for all the above that they have entitled this book Feminism: Past, Present, and Future Perspectives, because the authors are going to address how humanity is coping with the proposals of the last century. The authors want to show the most current points of view on women's issues through researches that are taking place in different geographic places, thanks to a procedure based on the case studies and methods. Finally, they will attempt to clarify what the future holds for women and state their demands firsthand.Target Audience:i)

Book Feminist Visions and Queer Futures in Postcolonial Drama

Download or read book Feminist Visions and Queer Futures in Postcolonial Drama written by Kanika Batra and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2011-04-13 with total page 195 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this timely study, Batra examines contemporary drama from India, Jamaica, and Nigeria in conjunction with feminist and incipient queer movements in these countries. Postcolonial drama, Batra contends, furthers the struggle for gender justice in both these movements by contesting the idea of the heterosexual, middle class, wage-earning male as the model citizen and by suggesting alternative conceptions of citizenship premised on working-class sexual identities. Further, Batra considers the possibility of Indian, Jamaican, and Nigerian drama generating a discourse on a rights-bearing conception of citizenship that derives from representations of non-biological, non-generational forms of kinship. Her study is one of the first to examine the ways in which postcolonial dramatists are creating the possibility of a dialogue between cultural activism, women’s movements, and an emerging discourse on queer sexualities.
