Book Nigeria s Stumbling Democracy and Its Implications for Africa s Democratic Movement

Download or read book Nigeria s Stumbling Democracy and Its Implications for Africa s Democratic Movement written by Victor Oguejiofor Okafor and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2008-07-30 with total page 207 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nigeria's Stumbling Democracy and its Implications for Africa's Democratic Movement is the first book to recount and analyze Nigeria's controversial general elections of April 2007. Because Nigeria's immense and diverse population of 140 million people and its wealth of natural resources make it a microcosm of Africa, Nigerian politics are an ideal case study and bellwether by which to view and understand African politics and the ongoing democratic experiments on the continent. Ten leading scholars of Nigerian and African politics, variously based in Nigeria, the US, and Europe, contribute original chapters commissioned by Professor Okafor to provide an account at once deep and comprehensive of what went wrong with these disputed presidential, federal, and state elections; together with their implications for the future of the democratic movement, both in Nigeria and in Africa as a whole. Although the 2007 general elections resulted in the first-ever handover of political power from one civilian government to another in the history of Nigeria, by which the two-term Christian president Olusegun Obasanjon was succeeded by a Muslim, Alhaji Musa Yar'Adua, they were condemned by internal and international watchdogs for pervasive vote-rigging, violence, intimidation, and fraud which were, as this book documents, perpetrated by and with the connivance of the nation's security forces. The disappointment of continental hopes that these elections might finally break with Nigeria's history of tainted elections has grave repercussions for the democracy movement not only in Nigeria but throughout Africa-as seen in the knock-on effect upon the disastrous general elections in Kenya later the same year.

Book We the People Building a New Democracy in Nigeria As a Model for Africa

Download or read book We the People Building a New Democracy in Nigeria As a Model for Africa written by Prof Peter Uchenna Nwangwu and published by Prof. Peter U. Nwangwu Pharm.D., PH.D.. This book was released on 2016-10-20 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: WE THE PEOPLE, is the product of a fine team of 18 distinguished authors who live in four different countries of the world; Nigeria, the United States of America, Britain and France. Nigerians at home and in the diaspora, women and men, young and old, Christians and Muslims, from many professional backgrounds and every geo-political zone in Nigeria, participated in writing this book; therefore, the central message and truths documented in this book is not the opinion of one man, but is the collective wisdom and opinion of WE THE PEOPLE of Nigeria. Nigeria has suffered enough setbacks and abuse as a nation from bad leaders. Nigerians as a people have suffered enough deprivation, social injustice, government-induced poverty, insecurity, lawlessness and disrespect through bad and corrupt leadership. The government and people of Nigeria have a Constitution, for the purpose of promoting the good governance and welfare of all persons in our country, on the principles of freedom, equality and justice, and for the purpose of consolidating the unity of our people. Every Nigerian president swears an oath to uphold, defend and implement the Constitution of Nigeria, the highest law in the Federal Republic of Nigeria, but every Nigerian president has violated directives of the Nigerian Constitution on how to treat WE THE PEOPLE of Nigeria. Everybody blames leadership for the deplorable state of Nigeria. There is no question that years of bad leadership has inflicted great injuries on the nation. However, those bad leaders were elected into office by bad Nigerians who voted along tribal and religious lines, or on the basis of who gave them the most money to vote for them. WE THE PEOPLE of Nigeria are therefore largely responsible for all the problems in Nigeria. But the problems with WE THE PEOPLE of Nigeria goes much more beyond the reckless mistakes they make when they vote bad people into office as their leaders. Most present day WE THE PEOPLE of Nigeria are corrupt, lawless, unpatriotic, prejudiced along tribal and religious lines, selfish and self-centered. These vices are a great burden to the nation. This book has been written to educate WE THE PEOPLE of Nigeria. Through education and dissemination of the facts we will change the mindset and create a new breed of WE THE PEOPLE of Nigeria. The WE THE PEOPLE movement, is the only hope of salvation and transformation for Nigeria. Individual repentance from corruption, lawlessness, reckless behavior, and prejudice along tribal and religious lines is the beginning of salvation and transformation for Nigeria. We need a new breed of WE THE PEOPLE of Nigeria. Eventually, we shall attain the critical mass required to clean up Nigeria from bottom to top. Only a clean bottom can create a clean top. The WE THE PEOPLE movement seeks to grow a new breed of WE THE PEOPLE of Nigeria that cuts across tribal, religious, and political inclinations; men and women of all ages and economic status who will commit to doing the right things in their daily lives, free from corrupt tendencies. Eventually, a clean bottom will lead to a clean top, as WE THE PEOPLE use the power of our votes to select clean men and women of integrity for leadership positions nationwide, as we take back our country from corrupt politicians and leaders who abuse WE THE PEOPLE. Additional Details are provided, including how to become a member of the WE THE PEOPLE movement. We have registered a non-governmental organization (NGO), "THE PEOPLE'S GRASSROOTS ASSOCIATION FOR A CORRUPTION-FREE NIGERIA." Our goal is to raise 50 million united Nigerians of every tribe and religion, men and women, young and old, from every ward, every local government, every state, every geo-political zone of Nigeria through a potent nationwide movement that will include proper and careful exercise of our voting rights to elect honest, decent, intellectuals with integrity as leaders and legislatures for a new and transformed Nigeria of our dreams.

Book Civil Society and Democracy in Nigeria

Download or read book Civil Society and Democracy in Nigeria written by Bernard Nwosu and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-07-28 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the complex relationship between the state and civil society and the impact that this has had on democratization processes in Nigeria from colonial times to the present. Expanding notions of democracy, the author builds a theoretical understanding of civil society to show how it can be both antithetical to and an ally of the state in the struggle for democratization. Combining the neo-Gramscian framework with discursive perspectives from Habermas and Foucault, the book takes a dialectical approach that traces the incarnations of the state and civil society and relates the mutual connections of the two spaces. This book will be of interest to scholars of African politics, democratization and civil society.

Book excerpt: There is a paradoxical relationship between democracy and development in Nigeria. In the twenty years of electoral democracy, poverty, inequality, unemployment, underemployment and insecurity have increased. The hopes of citizens that democracy would lead to improved living standards have been dashed. Social justice and inclusive sustainable development have also been elusive. The economy has remained dependent on 2 primary sectors - agriculture and oil - and low value added services. The aspiration that by 2020, Nigeria would become one of the twenty leading economies in the world has not been achieved, the political elite have captured the state for personal gains and unsurprisingly, Nigeria remains one of the most corrupt countries in the world.

Book Democracy in Nigeria

Download or read book Democracy in Nigeria written by Anthony Abioye Akinola and published by . This book was released on 2013-08-29 with total page 219 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Democracy in Nigeria - Thoughts and Selected Commentaries consists of a series of essays which address a variety of issues bordering on good governance and the stability of the Nigerian state. While the author is optimistic about the future of his nation and proposes measures that can drive its democracy forward, he is unhappy that corruption, in particular, has impeded progress in an otherwise vibrant nation. He believes that proper education and a realistic federal arrangement provide the solution to religious intolerance and all the ills that are associated with it, while a more proactive population can actually tame the monster of corruption if they are genuinely worried that corruption has been responsible for their individual and collective plights.
