Book excerpt: Nigerians born before 1975 may not really be enthusiastic about reading the narratives in my third (3rd) book, "On the BRINK" and that's understandable. They are not its target per se. The book is intended for our youths, children and the unborn between 1975 and 1999 when Nigeria was ruled by military dictators who governed without consideration for the well-being of the people and their future. While "On the BRINK's" content is not aimed at these elderly Nigerians, their testimonies can go a long way to lend credence to the recounts in the book, thereby reinforcing the authenticity and veracity of the stories therein.Citizens of Nigeria entered the fourth republic on May 29, 1999 with great expectations, believing that this change will usher in better days under the Peoples Democratic Party - PDP - led administration, with retired Army Gen Olusegun Obasanjo at the saddle. While some of us, gullible Nigerians were rejoicing, basking in the euphoria of our nascent democracy, skeptics like me, having scrutinized the caliber of people who constituted the bulk of the ruling party, cautioned that it's not time yet to shout "uhuru."Sixteen (16) years into our fledgling democracy, the welfare of most Nigerians under the various PDP-led administrations has not improved. If you ask me, I will say it has gone from bad to worse, and it got to a head in 2015 when the last PDP-led government under Goodluck Ebele Jonathan was trounced in a Presidential election he organized, in which he was seeking re-election as an incumbent President - which is a testimony to the quality of leadership this party had provided Nigerians between 1999 and 2015.This book, "What a bumpy ride!" delves into the maladministration that was unleashed on Nigerians between this period, and the intention of the author is not to castigate or disparage the efforts of these various administrations, but to chronicle their contributions to the state of the nation under their watch, from the perspective of an ordinary Nigerian who bore the brunt of their misrule, and for the coming generations, so that when the day of reckoning comes - and I am sure it will one day - they will know who and who to hold accountable for their stewardship.

Download or read book Globality Unequal Development and Ethics of Duty written by Mahmoud Masaeli and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2016-09-23 with total page 399 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Do we have a duty to end poverty? Is this duty to alleviate poverty, or it is for healing of disempowerment? Based on what moral reasoning is this duty grounded? Must this reasoning be based on value consensus, or can it result in convergence on conclusions from plural moral premises? What results derive from this duty? To whom is this duty addressed? What are the dimensions of this duty? Is this a duty to help or a duty for justice? Is it a uniform duty or are there diverse lines of reasoning and justifications for it? Who must undertake this duty? How is the duty undertaken and fulfilled? Bringing together contributions investigating fundamental themes related to globality and ethics of duty, this volume offers a detailed analysis of these questions, while providing some policy solutions. Indeed, it provides a multifaceted and interdisciplinary dialogue about the ethics of duty in an age of globality and extreme poverty.

When their attempt to burn down the opposition’s local headquarters ends in disaster, Dantala must run for his life, leaving his best friend behind. He makes his way to a mosque that provides him with food, shelter, and guidance. With his quick aptitude and modest nature, Dantala becomes a favored apprentice to the mosque’s sheikh. Before long, he is faced with a terrible conflict of loyalties, as one of the sheikh’s closest advisors begins to raise his own radical movement. When bloodshed erupts in the city around him, Dantala must decide what kind of Muslim—and what kind of man—he wants to be. “An ambitious book that tackles modern Nigeria’s extremely complex religious landscape with great insight, passion, and humor by taking us deep into the mental and emotional space of the country’s most neglected.” —Uzodinma Iweala, author of Beasts of No Nation

Book The New Odyssey The Story of the Twenty First Century Refugee Crisis

Download or read book The New Odyssey The Story of the Twenty First Century Refugee Crisis written by Patrick Kingsley and published by Liveright Publishing. This book was released on 2017-01-10 with total page 366 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Named one of the Best Books of the Year by NPR and Christian Science Monitor In the humane tradition of Katherine Boo’s Behind the Beautiful Forevers comes a searing account of the international refugee crisis. On the day of his son’s fourteenth birthday, Hashem al-Souki lay somewhere in the Mediterranean, crammed in a wooden dinghy. His family was relatively safe—at least for the time being—in Egypt, where they had only just settled after fleeing their war-torn Damascus home three years prior. Traversing these unforgiving waters and the treacherous terrain that would follow was worth the slim chance of securing a safe home for his children in Sweden. If he failed, at least he would fail alone. Hashem’s story is tragically common, as desperate victims continue to embark on deadly journeys in search of freedom. Tracking the harrowing experiences of these brave refugees, The New Odyssey finally illuminates the shadowy networks that have facilitated the largest forced exodus since the end of World War II. The Guardian’s first-ever migration correspondent, Patrick Kingsley has traveled through seventeen countries to put an indelible face on this overwhelming disaster. Embedding himself alongside the refugees, Kingsley reenacts their flight with hundreds of people across the choppy Mediterranean in the hopes of better understanding who helps or hinders their path to salvation. From the starving migrants who push through sandstorms with children strapped to their backs to the exploitive criminals who prey on them, from the smugglers who dangerously stretch the limits of their cargo space to the volunteers who uproot their own lives to hand out water bottles—what emerges is a kaleidoscope of humanity in the wake of tragedy. By simultaneously tracing the narrative of Hashem, who endured the trek not once but twice, Kingsley memorably creates a compassionate, visceral portrait of the mass migration in both its epic scope and its heartbreaking specificity. Exposing the realities of this modern-day odyssey as well as the moral shortcomings evident in our own indifference, the result is a crucial call to arms and an unprecedented exploration of a world we too often choose not to know.
