Book Africa in the New World Order

Download or read book Africa in the New World Order written by Olayiwola Abegunrin and published by Lexington Books. This book was released on 2014-07-08 with total page 277 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the role of the emerging African nations in the new international order of the twenty-first century. Since the end of the Cold War, little significance has been placed on the African continent in the security and political considerations of the Western world. However, post-9/11 international security has been redefined, and new challenges have been identified. Thus, at the beginning of the twenty-first century, Africa is facing a variety of new security challenges. Africa has become an increasingly important battleground in the fight against terrorism. Since the beginning of 2011, the new revolutions, now known as the Arab Spring, that swept through North Africa have created new challenges for the African continent and are compounding the African peoples’ struggles for poverty alleviation, state stability, security, socio-political and socio-economic development, democracy, and good governance. In addition to these crises of civil war, ethnic conflict, state insecurity, and rampant corruption at all levels, the HIV/AIDS pandemic has ravaged the continent for the past four decades. The only major pan-African organization—the African Union—is unable to lead and defend the continent effectively. At this crucial period when the continent is confronted with these myriad of security challenges, it needs effective, strong leadership that possesses both human and natural resources to play a leadership role in Africa and lead the continent in the new global order of the twenty-first century. The contributors to this volume analyze many of these issues and place them in the wider context of global security.

Book Nigeria Nationalism and Writing History

Download or read book Nigeria Nationalism and Writing History written by Toyin Falola and published by University Rochester Press. This book was released on 2010 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book traces the history of writing about Nigeria since the nineteenth century, with an emphasis on the rise of nationalist historiography and the leading themes. The second half of the twentieth century saw the publication of massive amounts of literature on Nigeria by Nigerian and non-Nigerian historians. This volume reflects on that literature, focusing on those works by Nigerians in thecontext of the rise and decline of African nationalist historiography. Given the diminishing share in the global output of literature on Africa by African historians, it has become crucial to reintroduce Africans into historicalwriting about Africa. As the authors attempt here to rescue older voices, they also rehabilitate a stale historiography by revisiting the issues, ideas, and moments that produced it. This revivalism also challenges Nigerian historians of the twenty-first century to study the nation in new ways, to comprehend its modernity, and to frame a new set of questions on Nigeria's future and globalization. In spite of current problems in Nigeria and its universities, that historical scholarship on Nigeria (and by extension, Africa) has come of age is indisputable. From a country that struggled for Western academic recognition in the 1950s to one that by the 1980s had emerged as one of the most studied countries in Africa, Nigeria is not only one of the early birthplaces of modern African history, but has also produced members of the first generation of African historians whose contributions to the development and expansion of modern African history is undeniable. Like their counterparts working on other parts of the world, these scholars have been sensitive to the need to explore virtually all aspects of Nigerian history. The book highlights the careers of some of Nigeria's notable historians of the first and second generation. Toyin Falola is Jacob and Frances Sanger Mossiker Chair in the Humanities and University Distinguished Teaching Professor at the University of Texas at Austin. Saheed Aderinto is Assistant Professor of History at Western Carolina University.

Book Redefining Moments for Project Nigeria in the Twenty First Century

Download or read book Redefining Moments for Project Nigeria in the Twenty First Century written by Jibo Nura and published by Authors Online Limited. This book was released on 2010-11 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nura's pioneer book is a highly readable and original text that provides a panacea on how the Nigeria's decadent and dysfunctional socio-economic and political system could be overhauled and transformed for the betterment of Nigerians. It is highly recommended to all that are interested in making Nigeria's project a reality.Jibo Nura shows, in this collection of essays, that the Nigerian idyll isn't lost. The consistency of his patriotic passion leaps at every reader after a few pages, and the mere fact that he's not entangled with an identified political trajectory absolves him of accusations of praise-singing or slander.Nura has in this collection demonstrated that in spite of the rot in our society which turned the youths as mere pawns in the game of Nigeria's politics there is someone who has no price tag. This is because over the years as indicated in these essays, he has consistently not only exposed but challenged the bankruptcy of the nation's thieving elites. Though with some youthful exuberance, Nura has shown dynamism by providing answers to most of the leadership questions raised in the book. The book is therefore compelling material for students and scholars of good governance especially in Nigeria.
