Book Oil Wealth and Insurgency in Nigeria

Download or read book Oil Wealth and Insurgency in Nigeria written by Omolade Adunbi and published by Indiana University Press. This book was released on 2015-07-29 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Omolade Adunbi investigates the myths behind competing claims to oil wealth in Nigeria's Niger Delta. Looking at ownership of natural resources, oil extraction practices, government control over oil resources, and discourse about oil, Adunbi shows how symbolic claims have created an "oil citizenship." He explores the ways NGOs, militant groups, and community organizers invoke an ancestral promise to defend land disputes, justify disruptive actions, or organize against oil corporations. Policies to control the abundant resources have increased contestations over wealth, transformed the relationship of people to their environment, and produced unique forms of power, governance, and belonging.

Book excerpt: The development of Nigeria's oil industry is examined comprehensively in this book, originally published in 1984. Oil has enabled her to command a powerful position in African affairs and within OPEC itself, but at the same time, has held back other forms of economic development. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a scrupulous account of the petroleum industry from 1906 to the present. The story traces development before the discovery of oil in Oloibiri and proceeds to offer comprehensive account of various legislative instruments that were adopted in the development process. The Nigerian Content Law, the gas flaring difficulties and the issue of sabotage are amply dealt with. The book has several media reports to spotlight the heavy corruption ravaging the industry and closes with the attempted subsidy removal by the Jonathan administration. The author ends with a philosophical rhetoric "as if there is no future", calling into question the role of politics and politicians in the misfortune of Nigeria's oil and gas sector. The application of legislation and regulation to the practice of oil and gas is a consistent theme permeating through the book, giving it not only a solid academic emphasis to the readers, but also a strong orientation towards policy. The book is well positioned to address the technical and commercial issues of the Nigerian's oil and gas sector which should be familiar to oil company managements and experts.

Book Nigeria

Download or read book Nigeria written by Sarah Ahmad Khan and published by . This book was released on 1994 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nigeria is the most populated nation on the African continent and contains a vast wealth of natural resources. It is the largest petroleum producer in Africa, and a key exporter of oil to both Western Europe and the US, and yet the political economy of Nigeria remains one of gross indebtedness, inefficiency and mismanagement. Here, the author brings together these issues in a far-ranging account of the Nigerian oil industry. She explores the fraught relationship between the government and foreign oil companies, the financial constraints on domestic investment, and the tragic lessons of an economy dependent on oil. This is a fascinating look at the problems of this developing country trying to exploit its natural resources, and will be of interest to scholars of development studies and international business.

Book excerpt: Research Paper (postgraduate) from the year 2013 in the subject Politics - Region: Africa, grade: 1,0, , course: International Business, language: English, abstract: How did crude oil affect the economic growth and the poverty of Nigeria? This paper is going to analyze effect of crude oil on the Nigerian economy. We examine the correlation between fuel exports and GDP per capita growth, and poverty headcount ratio between 1960 and 2012. Since the discovery of crude oil in Nigeria the economy of Nigeria has improved, increasing the GDP through the sales of oil barrels abroad. The paper observes that the blessings from crude oil resource in Nigeria at large takes the form of increased government revenues, increased export earnings, the attendant improvement, opportunities and linkage effects in the economy. However the paper is majorly going to focus on the variables between the increased GDP and the increase poverty level. This paper is of the view that crude oil resource is more of curse than a blessing to the Nigerian economy.

Book High Stakes and Stakeholders

Download or read book High Stakes and Stakeholders written by Kenneth Omeje and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-03-02 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nigeria is Africa's largest oil producing country. Oil generates enormous wealth but also extensive and devastating conflict in the country. High Stakes and Stakeholders critically explores the oil conflict in Nigeria, its evolution, dynamics and most significantly, the interplay and consequences of high stake politics for the reproduction and persistence of the conflict. It presents a conceptual anatomy of state-oil industry-society relations and demonstrates how the embedded material interests and accumulation patterns of different stakeholders underlie, shape and complicate both the oil conflict and security. In addition, the book provides key insights into comparable conflicts elsewhere in the global south, developing a logical framework for resolving the oil conflict in Nigeria and for reforming the security sector. This book is valuable reading material for courses in international political economy, social ecology, development studies, African politics, conflict and security studies, and environmental law and management. It will also be of interest to policy practitioners, civil societies and the oil industry.
