Download or read book Nigeria and Its Tin Fields Classic Reprint written by Albert F. Calvert and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-11 with total page 372 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Nigeria and Its Tin Fields The present conspicuous position which Northern Nigeria holds in the public eye is of very recent attainment, and its development has been, com paratively speaking, the work of a moment. The discovery of tin in paying quantities within its boundaries is the secret of its sudden leap to an eminence from which it compels interest, and attracts to itself more than ordinary curiosity and atten tion. It is with Northern Nigeria as it was with New South Wales and California, with the Malay Peninsula and Rhodesia. Their potentialities were admitted long before the existence of their mineral wealth was made known, but it was not until their minerals were discovered that they loomed into absorbing prominence. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Through Unknown Nigeria This volume is no more than impressions taken from a quiver of them gained in the course of a rather long visit, part of it through country not well-known. Most chapters were written during the journey, either at the close of a day's trek or whilst detained at various spots. My Obligations are manifold for the courtesy, kindness and assistance shown in various quarters. If all to whom I feel indebted were stated several pages would be required. Book Up Against It in Nigeria Classic Reprint

Download or read book Up Against It in Nigeria Classic Reprint written by Langa Langa and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-19 with total page 302 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Up Against It in Nigeria In doing so I found myself gradually writing what Boswell or Lander would have called a journal, but what I prefer to describe as a small-chop diary - that is to say, a collection of incidents, in more or less chronological order, written, as they would have been told, at the Witching hour of small-chop, with scarce a camouflage of persons or localities. In these reminiscences questions of Administration have been left severely alone. But this is all very ordinary stuff which might have happened to anyone 1 it may be exclaimed. So much the better. It will then convey, I hope, a reasonable picture of the life of the average Political Officer in its essential features in this country as it was, is, and, in spite of the Railway and Political Memoranda, ever shall be. From it the newcomer may pick up a wrinkle or two between the lines: while the old bird may look backwards, and take it, as it is meant, not unkindly. I shall probably be accused of coming the old coaster in my allusions to those days, and that time but it must be remembered that men and things die and change out here with remarkable rapidity, and that 1918 is as far removed from 1908 in Nigeria as 1908 is from 1838 in the civilized world. Nobody gets more irritable than I do with the prosy gentlemen who refer to the events of nought four and nought six and so on, as if they were speaking of some landmark in the Dark Ages, or an old vintage. And yet how many of those cheery bush-whackers we knew so recently as nought anything are alive to-day! Not too many - certainly not 40 per cent. Of the characters mentioned in this book and those who are, if we may believe the West African Pocket-book, are so solely by virtue of the drinks they have not, and the quinine they have taken - in my own case some grains! Book Woman s Mysteries of a Primitive People

Download or read book Woman s Mysteries of a Primitive People written by D. Amaury Talbot and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-05-02 with total page 346 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Woman's Mysteries of a Primitive People: The Ibibios of Southern Nigeria During this time we were naturally anxious to do something in return for all that was done for us, and soon discovered that the chief way in which we could be of use was by making clear copies of rough notes jotted down in spare moments by my husband, and by writing out information which there was no time to collect save orally, thus putting upon paper page after page of description, incident or legend, which pressure of official work must otherwise have kept unrecorded. When therefore a kind request came from England for a paper embodying the woman's point of View of scenes and happenings so different from those to which most of us are accustomed, the idea of separate authorship seemed to one who, up till then, had only acted as an unofficial secretary, almost as startling as if a pen from the inkstand had been asked to start writing on its own account. On thinking the matter over, however, it really appeared that, since the women of these regions had never yet been studied by a white woman, a paper dealing with the question from this side might have a certain interest.
