Book Impact of Boko Haram Insurgency on Nigeria s Relations with its Neighbours

Download or read book Impact of Boko Haram Insurgency on Nigeria s Relations with its Neighbours written by Monsuru Rasaq and published by GRIN Verlag. This book was released on 2017-08-17 with total page 74 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bachelor Thesis from the year 2016 in the subject Politics - Region: Africa, grade: 70.0, Obafemi Awolowo University, course: International Relations, language: English, abstract: This study unravels the impact of Boko Haram insurgency on Nigeria’s relations with its Neighbours. This study analyses the nature and character of Nigeria’s neighbours and discovers that it is most time responsible for a low profile in Nigeria’s foreign policy gesture towards them. This phenomenon is not unconnected to their perception of Nigeria as a hegemonic power in its neighbourhood given Nigeria demographic, economic and military preponderance over them. This perception of Nigeria by its neighbours has over the years contributed to their frosty relations notably; the hostile gestures of Chad and Cameroon towards Nigeria, the security concern that the internal crisis in Chad in the 1970s generated for Nigeria coupled with the presence of French forces in N’Djamena at the eve of the Nigerian Civil War. The study draws the attention to how Boko Haram insurgency further influences Nigeria’s relations with its neighbours. The outreach of Boko Haram insurgency beyond the boundary of Nigeria to include that of Nigeria’s neighbours has worsened the existing frosty relations among them. This is true if one considers the fact that the activities of the Boko Haram have gone beyond the north-eastern part of Nigeria, with its violent attacks on the Nigerien soil compounding the already existing economic crisis in Niger Republic, kidnapping of prominent citizens of Cameroon and foreign nationals for ransom motive, its use of Chad as a safe haven and notably, its thwarting of Nigeria’s influence in its neighbourhood, Boko Haram insurgency has forced Nigeria to concentrate more on its domestic issue. The study therefore, concludes by recommending to the government to adopt policies that are expansive and inclusive to address the crisis among which is the revamping of the socioeconomic condition and that attention should be given to border management and administration.

Book The Tiv and Their Southern Neighbours 1890 1990

Download or read book The Tiv and Their Southern Neighbours 1890 1990 written by Emmanuel Chiahemba Ayangaor and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the economic, political and socio-cultural relations of the Tiv people of Benue State with their southern neighbours. In pre-colonial times, the Tiv, needing additional farm lands, began displacing their southern neighbours and settling on their farms. In retaliation, teams of Ogirinya headhunters targeted lone Tiv women and farmers. The Tiv's answer to this loss of life was to adopt Ogirinya themselves, and clandestine mutual headhunting then became a standing blood feud that escaped the notice of the colonial administration for years. During an official inquiry into the causes of the 1985 Tsar-Obudu War, both parties confessed that Ogirinya was the main cause of their inter-ethnic wars. Once the leaders of the neighbouring local government areas agreed to ban Ogirinya and to set up a joint monitoring committee, peace returned to the borderlands. In addition to the conflicts, Ayangaor also covers the intermarriages, friendships, pacts, and palm wine drinking orgies of these interdependent peoples. This book is part of the African World Series, edited by Toyin Falola, Jacob and Frances Sanger Mossiker Chair in the Humanities, University of Texas at Austin.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Egypt and Her Neighbours: A Reader aims at re-presenting the socio-economic, political, and religious events that shaped the Nile Valley region. Egypt is the home of one of the most ancient civilisation known by humankind. As a matter of fact, the country is generally referred to as the cradle of civilisation; hence, there is a need for the continuous probing of events in that country and how such events have shaped the growth and development of other civilisations in the Nile valley region. This edition has been necessitated by the recent developments in the Nile Valley region, particularly the unending and seemingly unresolvable Darfur Crisis and the Ethiopia, Eritrea, Somalia conflicts. The strategic importance of Egypt and her neighbours in world politics cannot be over-emphasised. Egypt, especially has continued to play a vital role in the politics of North Africa and the Middle East. The issues raised in this work are germane to the understanding of the politics of the Horn of Africa vis- -vis conflict resolution and crisis management. The work has also laid open the hidden facts about Egypt and her neighbours. It is expected that the book will provoke greater interest in the geopolitical areas discussed by the contributors.Michael M. Ogbeidi, Ph.D. is Associate Professor of History at the Department of History and Strategic Studies, University of Lagos, Nigeria. He has published chapters and articles in books and learned journals both locally and abroad.
