Book Nietzsche Wagner and the Philosophy of Pessimism

Download or read book Nietzsche Wagner and the Philosophy of Pessimism written by Roger Hollinrake and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2010-11-01 with total page 259 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nietzsche’s relationship with Wagner has long been a source of controversy and has given rise to a number of important studies, including this major breakthrough in Nietzsche scholarship, first published in 1982. In this work Hollinrake contends that the nature and extent of the anti-Wagnerian pastiche and polemic in Thus Spake Zarathustra is arguably the most important factor in the association between the two. Thus Wagner, as the purveyor of a particular brand of Schopenhauerian pessimism, is here revealed as one of the principle sources – and targets – of Zarathustra. Whilst addressed primarily to students of German Literature, this book will also be of interest to musicians, philosophers and students of the history of culture and ideas.

Book The Birth of Tragedy Or Hellenism and Pessimism

Download or read book The Birth of Tragedy Or Hellenism and Pessimism written by Friedrich Nietzsche and published by Newcomb Livraria Press. This book was released on with total page 152 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A new 2023 translation into American English from the original manuscript of Nietzsche's 1869 "Die Geburt der Tragödie" / The Birth of Tragedy. The original German follows the English translation for reference. This is volume 1 in The Complete Works of Friedrich Nietzsche from Newcomb Livraria Press. This chronological, systematic set of Nietzsche's works is the first ever bilingual "Hauptwerke" or complete major works of Nietzsche published in English & the original German. The Birth of Tragedy has two different subtitles from two editions both published by Nietzsche; the first was "from the spirit of music" and the second "Hellenism or Pessimism". Composed from essays written from 1869-71, The Birth of Tragedy was first printed in Leipzig in 1872 under the title "Die Geburt der Tragödie aus dem Geiste der Musik”. In 1886, the same publisher printed a new new edition under the new title "Die Geburt der Tragödie oder Griechentum und Pessimismus" with a second preface "Versuch einer Selbstkritik” where Nietzsche criticizes his own work. Both prefaces from these two versions are included here. Here in his first major work, Nietzsche articulates a semi-Hegelian tragic dichotomy of pre-cosmogonic energy underlying all of human struggle made manifest most explicitly in Greek tragedy. For the Greeks understood most clearly the forces which were driving the ethos of their civilization, finding a balance between chaos and order. It is a suspiciously metaphysical description of the origins of human culture from a man who believed it was his purpose as a “world-historical” individual to destroy the lie of the existence of Metaphysics. For as much as he criticized German Critical and Idealistic Philosophy of German, he shared an unwavering admiration for the Greek Philosophers, nearly to the point of worship.

Book The Birth of Tragedy or Hellenism and Pessimism

Download or read book The Birth of Tragedy or Hellenism and Pessimism written by Friedrich Nietzsche and published by Livraria Press. This book was released on with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nietzsche wrote "The Birth of Tragedy from the Spirit of Music", one of his most influential works, during his intensive friendship with Richard Wagner in Basel, after meeting him in Leipzig in 1868. In 1869, at the young age of 24, Nietzsche accepted a professorship in philology, which facilitated his acquaintance with the composer, who lived in Tribschen. In 1871, he began work on his book, originally titled "Origin and Goal of Tragedy". When it was published in Leipzig in January 1872, Die Geburt der Tragödie aus dem Geist der Musik (The Birth of Tragedy from the Spirit of Music) was warmly received by Wagner. The scholarly community, however, remained largely silent, except for the classical philologist Ulrich von Wilamowitz-Moellendorff (1848-1931), Nietzsche's former colleague, who criticized the book in his "Zukunftsphilologie. Wilamowitz's critique shaped the direction of classical studies well into the 1940s, leaving Nietzsche largely marginalized. Nietzsche was 27 at the time of publication, and largely summarizes all of his major ideas up until that point. This translation is from the second edition Nietzsche published in 1886, which was re-titled "The birth of tragedy or Hellenism and Pessimism", sometimes translated "Greekness and Pessimism". This second edition contains the famous essay "Attempt at Self-Criticism". Here he introduces to the public the concepts of the Apollonian and Dionysian forces, representing the rational, orderly aspects of human existence and the chaotic, instinctual elements, respectively. Nietzsche argues that the interplay between these forces is central to the creation of meaningful art, particularly in the genre of tragedy, which he sees as a profound expression of the human condition. This seminal work posits that the beauty of the Greek tragedy arose from the tension and interplay between these Psychological opposing forces, suggesting that tragedy embodies the fundamental contradictions of human realities. Freudian theories of the subconscious were deeply influenced by Nietzsche and Schopenhauer's belief in these meta-psychological forces, which Nietzsche calls later the "inner gods". This new 2024 translation from the original German, Latin and Greek manuscript contains a new Afterword by the translator, a timeline of Nietzsche's life and works, an index with descriptions of his core concepts and summaries of his complete body of works. This translation is designed to allow the armchair philosopher to engage deeply with Nietzsche's works without having to be a full-time Academic. The language is modern and clean, with simplified sentence structures and diction to make Nietzsche's complex language and arguments as accessible as possible. This Reader's Edition also contains extra material that amplifies the manuscript with autobiographical, historical and linguistic context. This provides the reader a holistic view of this very enigmatic philosopher as both an introduction and an exploration of Nietzsche's works; from his general understanding of his philosophic project to an exploration of the depths of his metaphysics and unique contributions. This edition contains: • An Afterword by the Translator on the history, impact and intellectual legacy of Nietzsche • Translation notes on the original German manuscript • An index of Philosophical concepts used by Nietzsche with a focus on Existentialism and Phenomenology • A complete chronological list of Nietzsche's entire body of works • A detailed timeline of Nietzsche's life journey

Book Nietzsche s Struggle Against Pessimism

Download or read book Nietzsche s Struggle Against Pessimism written by Patrick Hassan and published by . This book was released on 2023-11 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On what grounds could life be made worth living, given its abundant suffering? Friedrich Nietzsche was among many who attempted to answer this question. While always seeking to resist pessimism, Nietzsche's strategy for doing so, and the extent to which he was willing to concede conceptual grounds to pessimists, shifted dramatically over time. His reading of pessimists such as Eduard von Hartmann, Olga Plümacher, and Julius Bahnsen-as well as their critics, such as Eugen Dühring and James Sully-has been under-explored in the secondary literature, isolating him from his intellectual context. Patrick Hassan's book seeks to correct this. After closely mapping Nietzsche's philosophical development on to the relevant axiological and epistemological issues, it disentangles his various critiques of pessimism, elucidating how familiar Nietzschean themes (e.g. eternal recurrence, aesthetic justification, will to power, and his critique of Christianity) can and should be assessed against this philosophical backdrop.

Book Nietzsche versus Wagner

Download or read book Nietzsche versus Wagner written by Friedrich Nietzsche and published by Livraria Press. This book was released on with total page 106 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Nietzsche versus Wagner", sometimes translated "Nietzsche against Wagner", is a critical examination of the composer Richard Wagner, whom Nietzsche praised in his early years and later declared his enemy. Nietzsche was close to the entire Wagner family, even Wagner's wives, but later had a falling out and spent a significant amount of energy attacking him. In this work, Nietzsche distances himself from Wagner's music and ideology, criticizing the composer's embrace of German nationalism and his turn to Christianity. Nietzsche contrasts Wagner's decadent, pessimistic art with his own vision of a life-affirming, Dionysian aesthetic. The book reflects Nietzsche's broader concerns about the role of art and culture in society and his ongoing exploration of the tensions between Apollonian and Dionysian forces. Nietzsche also addresses the psychological and philosophical implications of Wagner's music, arguing that it represents a retreat from the complexities of reality into the comforting illusions of myth and religion. He sees Wagner's work as symptomatic of a broader cultural malaise characterized by a loss of vitality and authenticity. Through his critique of Wagner, Nietzsche seeks to reaffirm the values of individualism, creativity, and the joyful affirmation of life that he believes are essential to the rejuvenation of culture and the realization of human potential. This is one of three major works attacking Wager's music and legacy Nietzsche issued. This work was assembled and published at the end of 1888 under the title Nietzsche contra Wagner, shortly before his final mental collapse in January 1889. The text was published in December 1888 by C. G. Naumann in Leipzig. This new 2024 translation of the original 1888 German manuscript includes a new afterword by the translator, a timeline of Nietzsche's life and works, an index with descriptions of his key concepts, and summaries of his complete works. Book excerpt: Nietzsche found in classical Athenian tragedy an art form that transcended the pessimism and nihilism of a fundamentally meaningless world. The Greek spectators, by looking into the abyss of human suffering and affirming it, passionately and joyously affirmed the meaning of their own existence. They knew themselves to be infinitely more than petty individuals, finding self-affirmation not in another life, not in a world to come, but in the terror and ecstasy alike celebrated in the performance of tragedies.

Book The Philosophies of Richard Wagner

Download or read book The Philosophies of Richard Wagner written by Julian Young and published by Lexington Books. This book was released on 2014-09-09 with total page 171 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In addition to being a great composer, Richard Wagner was also an important philosopher. Julian Young begins by examining the philosophy of art and society Wagner constructs during his time as a revolutionary anarchist-communist. Modernity, Wagner argued, is to be rescued from its current anomie through the rebirth of Greek tragedy (the original Gesamtkunstwerk) in the form of the “artwork of the future," an artwork of which his own operas are the prototype. Young then examines the entirely different philosophy Wagner constructs after his 1854 conversion from Hegelian optimism to Schopenhauerian pessimism. “Redemption” now becomes, not a future utopia in this world, but rather “transfigured” existence in another world, attainable only through death. Viewing Wagner’s operas through the lens of his philosophy, the book offers often novel interpretations of Lohengrin, The Ring cycle, Tristan und Isolde, Die Meistersinger, and Parsifal. Finally, Young dresses the cause of Friedrich Nietzsche’s transformation from Wagner’s intimate friend and disciple into his most savage critic. Nietzsche’s fundamental accusation, it is argued, is one of betrayal: that Wagner betrayed his early, “life affirming” philosophy of art and life in favor of “life-denial." Nietzsche’s assertion and the final conclusion of the book is that our task, now, is to “become better Wagnerians than Wagner.”
