It shows that twelve day cycles, which run throughout the book's narrative, and the one full annual cycle, which encompasses the circular and the diurnal images in a continuous cycle of life affirmation, track Zarathustra's ever-changing identity throughout the text. In representing the eternal recurrence, the circular and the cyclical symbols respectively convey the book's central message: Zarathustra comes into being in order to affirm existence as the teacher of eternal recurrence in an endlessly repeating cosmos. The study complements recent findings that Nietzsche's book is on eternal recurrence by establishing the unity among its language, structure, and fundamental conception, which solves the century-old problem of the communication or location of the doctrine within the text. Book excerpt: Nietzsche's Anthropic Circle is an internal analysis and interpretation of Nietzsche's critical uncovering of "anthropomorphic truth" in language and science, as well as his later use of anthropic analogies and transferences in his imaginative perspectival interpretation "a hybrid of art and science" of a universal, immanent "will to power" in nature. Both the relationship of Nietzsche to Kant's analysis of knowledge in the Critique of Pure Reason and his absorption of a dynamic theory of nature are explored in some detail. A crucial distinction between Nietzsche's perspectival concept of knowledge and perspectival interpretation is thoroughly discussed against the background of recurring analyses of his critique of knowledge and truth. It is shown that instrumental fictionalism was adopted by Nietzsche in order to put in question the pure objectivism of science. This links an aspect of his thought to the domain of recent American philosophy of science. The anticipatory relationship between Nietzsche's proto-structuralist analysis of language and recent linguistic structuralism, as well as his affiliation with evolutionary epistemology is explored. In the concluding portion of this inquiry it is contended that Nietzsche's psychology of a will to power in human drives, thought and behavior is at least theoretically defensible. However, it must be segregated from the extension of a will to power to the cosmos. There is a strong concluding argument offered that seeks to demonstrate that the so-called 'metaphysics' of the will to power is an artfully constructed, exoteric fable designed to retrieve a sense of the humanization of the world in face of a de-anthropomorphic world picture. George Stack is Professor Emeritus of Philosophy at the State University College of NewYork at Brockport, and the author of several books dealing with the philosophy of Friedrich Nietzsche.

In this study, Kay Picart uses a genealogical approach to track the way Nietzsche's initial use of "feminine" mythological figures as symbols for modernity's regenerative powers gradually gives way to an increasingly misogynistic politics, resulting in the silencing and emasculation of his earlier configurations of the "feminine." While other scholars have focused on classifying the degree of offensiveness of Nietzsche's ambivalent and developing misogyny, Picart examines what this misogyny means for his political philosophy as a whole. Picart successfully shows how Nietzsche's increasingly derogatory treatment of the "feminine" in his post-Zarathustran works is closely tied to his growing resentment over his inability to revive a decadent modernity.

Yet his influence on French philosophical thought can hardly be overestimated. Levinas wrote that “during over a half century of teaching and research, [Wahl] was the life force of the academic, extra-academic, and even, to a degree anti-academic philosophy necessary to a great culture.” And Deleuze, for his part, commented that “Apart from Sartre, who remained caught none the less in the trap of the verb to be, the most important philosopher in France was Jean Wahl.” Besides engaging with the likes of Bataille, Bergson, Deleuze, Derrida, Levinas, Maritain, and Sartre, Wahl also played a significant role, in some cases almost singlehandedly, in introducing French philosophy to movements like existentialism, and American pragmatism and literature, and thinkers like Hegel, Kierkegaard, Nietzsche, Jaspers, and Heidegger. Yet Wahl was also an original philosopher and poet in his own right. This volume of selections from Wahl’s philosophical writings makes a selection of his most important work available to the English-speaking philosophical community for the first time. Jean Wahl was Professor of Philosophy at the Sorbonne from 1936 to 1967, save during World War II, which he spent in the United States, having escaped from the Drancy internment camp. Pointing out that Nietzsche's overcoming must be conceived as a task both critical and reconstructive, Haar shows how Nietzsche criticizes philosophical concepts as being traceable to a process of simplification and identification, thus subverting traditional categories and identities. Haar presents Nietzsche as an aesthetic stoic. Although opposed to any doctrinal tenet, Nietzsche rekindles a Stoic return to nature in the register of a creative and aesthetic decision. Necessity is no longer a single rational force permeating all beings. Instead he conceives of the will to power as a schematization of the natural chaos and refers Dionysos to an inspiring voice: "the genius of the heart." Rejecting the Deleuzian essay of interpretation that unleashes the simulacra of an untamed imagination, Haar points out that Nietzsche's rejection of Kant is much less extreme than imagined in Deleuze's eccentric readings. Haar also shows that the rupture with Schopenhauer came very early in Nietzsche's itinerary although he accepted the idea of a social conditioning of science. Haar shows that two Apollonian sublimities are distinguished by Nietzsche: one generating idyll, epos, and mythic language; the other a compensatory illusion on the dramatic stage destined to dismiss the horror of an endlessly swelling ground. It is this monstrosity that a creative forgetfulness is destined to replace by seeking a place for the work of art amidst tragic joy.
