Book excerpt: The work of the later Schelling (in and after 1809) seems antithetical to that of Nietzsche: one a Romantic, idealist and Christian, the other Dionysian, anti-idealist and anti-Christian. Still, there is a very meaningful and educative dialogue to be found between Schelling and Nietzsche on the topics of reason, freedom and religion. Both of them start their philosophy with a similar critique of the Western tradition, which to them is overly dualist, rationalist and anti-organic (metaphysically, ethically, religiously, politically). In response, they hope to inculcate a more lively view of reality in which a new understanding of freedom takes center stage. This freedom can be revealed and strengthened through a proper approach to religion, one that neither disconnects from nor subordinates religion to reason. Religion is the dialogical other to reason, one that refreshes and animates our attempts to navigate the world autonomously. In doing so, Schelling and Nietzsche open up new avenues of thinking about (the relationship between) freedom, reason and religion.

In many ways he is still a contemporary philosopher, even in that sense of 'contemporary' which points to the future. We may have outgrown his style (always, however, admirable and exciting to read), his sense of drama, his creative exaggeration, his sometimes flamboy ant posture of a rebel wavering between the heroic and the puerile. Yet Nietzsche's critique of transcendental values and, especially, his attack on the inherited conceptions of rationality remain pertinent and continue to pro voke anew cultural critique or dissent. Today Nietzsche is no longer discussed apologetically, nor is his radicalism shunned or suppressed. That his work remains the object of extremely diverse readings is befitting a philosopher who replaced the concept of truth with that of interpretation. It is, indeed, around the concept of interpretation that much of the rem:wed interest in Nietzsche seems to center today. This work, which consists of a preface and three "treatises," is one of Nietzsche's most influential writings. They are not a collection of aphorisms like most of his other works, but longer, systematic texts with a thoroughly scientific approach: he presents sociological, historical, and psychological theses attacking Protestant Theology. Unlike the classical moral philosophers, Nietzsche does not attempt to derive or justify morality, but rather to trace the historical development and psychological preconditions of certain moral values. Thus, he does not ask how people should act, but why people (individuals or groups) believe they should act in a certain way, or want others to act in a certain way. He uses a genealogical method to trace the development of moral concepts, revealing their contingent and power-laden nature. The book is divided into three essays, each exploring different aspects of morality, including the contrast between master and slave morality, the role of guilt and guilt in the formation of conscience, and the ascetic ideal. Nietzsche's analysis in this work has had a profound influence on subsequent philosophical and cultural thought, particularly in the fields of ethics and moral psychology.
