Book excerpt: A 2 1/4 Cr 1% Mo steel, heat treated to consist of upper and lower bainite and ferrite, has been shown to undergo substantial microstructural modification when irradiated with 14-MeV nickel ions at 500°C to 350 dpa at the peak damage depth. The original cementite (Fe3C) in upper and lower bainite was replaced by Chi phase, M7C3 and M2C in upper bainite, and Chi and M7C3 in lower bainite. The originally precipitate-free ferrite contained a significant fraction of G phase after irradiation. The replacement of Fe3C by M7C3 and M2C is consistent with the fact that M7C3 and M2C form in a quenched and tempered 2 1/4 Cr 1 Mo steel, but at higher tempering temperatures than does Fe3C. On the other hand, Chi and G phases have not been reported to occur in this steel as a result of thermal treatments. The steel is resistant to void swelling, which amounted to 0.2% or less even at the rather high dpa levels employed in this study. The quantitative data for precipitate and void number densities and sizes agree quite well with a companion neutron irradiation study of the same steel possessing an identical microstructure.

Book excerpt: Radiation hardening and embrittlement of the BH 70 steel heat treated to different microstructures (tempered martensite, tempered bainite, and tempered mixed ferrite-perlite, bainite, and martensite after neutron irradiation about 7 x 1023 n/m2 > 1 MeV at 285°C) were compared with commercial heat treatment conditions. Only moderate radiation hardening, with small differences for individual conditions, was measured in all four heat treatment conditions (by 29 to 48%). Roughly the same radiation embrittlement ?TT4IJ = 137 to 148°C) was found in all heat treatment conditions used. The initial (unirradiated) and resultant (irradiated) Charpy-V 41-J transition temperature of the BH 70 steel, however, can be altered appreciably through heat treatment practices, resulting in different microstructure. Initial transition temperatures (TT4IJ) of individual heat treatments were found in the range from -73 to -143°C.

Book excerpt: The objectives of this effort is to identify the mechanisms involved in the radiation-induced evolution of microstructure in materials intended for fusion applications. The results of this study are useful in interpreting the results of several other ongoing experiments involving either spectral or isotopic tailoring to study the effects of helium on microstructure evolution. Ion-irradiated Fe-15Cr-XNi (X = 20, 35, 45, 60, 75) ternary alloys and a 15Cr-85Ni binary alloy were examined after bombardment at 675°C and compared to earlier observations made on these same alloys after irradiation in EBR-II at 510 or 538°C. The response of the ion-irradiated microstructures to nickel content appears to be very consistent with that of neutron irradiation even though there are four orders of magnitude difference in displacement rate and over 200°C difference in temperature. It appears that the transition to higher rates of swelling during both types of irradiation is related to the operation of some mechanisms that is not directly associated with void nucleation. 6 refs., 8 figs.
