Book excerpt: In order to quantitatively predict the chemical reactions that hazardous materials may undergo in the environment, it is necessary to know the relative stabilities of the compounds and complexes that may be found under certain conditions. This type of calculations may be done using consistent chemical thermodynamic data, such as those contained in this book for inorganic compounds and complexes of nickel. * Fully detailed authoritative critical review of literature. * Integrated into a comprehensive and consistent database for waste management applications. * CD ROM version.

Book The International Nickel Trade

Download or read book The International Nickel Trade written by Simon Clow and published by Woodhead Publishing. This book was released on 2014-03-14 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nickel is an internationally traded commodity and the smallest of the LME's six base metals contracts. Its unique characteristics allow a variety of commercial and industrial applications, the most important of which is undoubtedly in the production of stainless steels. Simon Clow has set out to paint an overall picture of the nickel trade; the result is a book which genuinely covers the entire industry. It describes the history and growth, defines areas of production and explains the mechanisms of demand and consumption. Above all the book is concerned with patterns of supply, with prices and with attitudes towards different pricing mechanisms.

Book Three Quarters Two Dimes and a Nickel

Download or read book Three Quarters Two Dimes and a Nickel written by Steve Fiffer and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 1999-09-24 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What would you do if you were seventeen years old and broke your neck? It's tough enough to stand on the verge of adulthood without the extra burden of not being able to stand at all. Steve Fiffer had his whole life ahead of him in December 1967 when he fractured his fifth cervical vertebra in a wrestling accident at school, shattering his dreams. The diagnosis was quadriplegia, and his parents were told that he would never walk again. Steve, however, was not content to accept such a fate. He had always been taught that he was a leader, not a follower, and he was not going to take this news lying down. Within five months he was out of the hospital, within seven he was on crutches, and within nine he was beginning his freshman year at Yale University. And most remarkable of all, he never lost his wisecracking sense of humor or his hunger for all that life has to offer. Three Quarters, Two Dimes, and a Nickel is Steve Fiffer's story of his coming of age, and of how he created a normal life for himself despite his injury. Steve refused to be consumed or defined by his physical condition; he may not be a dollar bill, he explains, but he's still "three quarters, two dimes, and a nickel." His battle to come back from his injury casts into sharp relief the drama of becoming an adult and wrestling with issues of identity, relationships, and ambition. We join him around the dinner table as he rebuilds his once-distant relationship with his father and gains a new appreciation of their bond; we agonize with him as he tries to find true love (or at least lose his virginity) despite his self-consciousness about his physical awkwardness, and we join him at the Lawson YMCA in downtown Chicago, where he rebuilds his body under the watchful eye of the manic physical-fitness coach Dick Woit, a retired football star who puts Steve through a sort of boot camp to raise his sights even higher and propel him off his crutches for good. Part guru, part drill instructor, Woit helps Steve to develop the mental toughness to put the injury behind him and to embrace adulthood and all its responsibilities. By turns poignant, darkly comic, and ultimately triumphant, Three Quarters, Two Dimes, and a Nickel is an affirmation of how the ordinary joys of life can win out even in extraordinary circumstances.

Book Engineering Properties of Nickel and Nickel Alloys

Download or read book Engineering Properties of Nickel and Nickel Alloys written by John Everhart and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nickel is probably the most versatile of the metallic elements. Among alloys containing nickel are some having high corrosion resistance and others that retain excellent strength and ductility from temperatures approaching ab solute zero to those near 2000 F. Some nickel alloys are strongly magnetic, others are virtually nonmagnetic; some have low rates of thermal expansion, others have high rates; some have high electrical resistivities; some have practically constant moduli of elasticity; one has an "elastic" memory. In addition, nickel is magnetostrictive. With this wide range of characteristics, it is not surprising that there are several thousand alloys containing nickel. It is impossible to consider all of these compositions in this publication and, therefore, several alloys in each of a number of categories have been selected to indicate the properties to be expected of the group. Low-alloy and constructional nickel-containing steels have been excluded on two grounds. To do them justice would require excessive space and, in addition, their applications differ generally from these of the materials under discussion. On the other hand, nickel-containing stainkss steels have been included because many of their applications fall into the same areas as those of a number of the high-nickel alloys. Many of the compositions discussed are proprietary alloys and they are protected by trademarks. A list of the trademarks and their owners is in cluded in the appendix.

Book The Organic Chemistry of Nickel

Download or read book The Organic Chemistry of Nickel written by P.W. Jolly and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 533 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Organic Chemistry of Nickel, Volume I: Organonickel Complexes is devoted to a description of the organonickel complexes. The major goal is to provide a reference work, and for this reason a conventional layout has been adopted with separate chapters devoted to each type of organic ligand. In the interest of readability, known compounds have been assembled in tables at the end of each chapter, thereby allowing the text to be used for discussions of the general chemistry involved and to highlight the special reactions associated with nickel. Conscious of the needs of organometallic chemists, the authors included systems in which no nickel-carbon bond is involved. Among these is a chapter on the tetrakisligand nickel complexes and sections on dioxygen and azobenzene complexes. The nitrosyl complexes and complexes containing a metal-metal bond—topics frequently considered to be part of the domain of the organometallic chemist—have not received individual attention. Tables of the observed bond distances in organonickel complexes are provided as an Appendix; a short list of the more important review articles relevant to each organic ligand can be found at the end of each chapter.
