Book excerpt: Nicio and Cedar Fire is the tale of a Native American fireman who, ignoring evacuation warnings; fights to save his home from a devastating forest fire; reminisces about his family and childhood; dreams about pre-Columbian Mesoamerican gods; and is ultimately saved by a Thunderbird. The story was inspired by real events experienced by the authors' brother, Martin Dionicio "Nicio" Aguilera. In October 2003 his home in California was threatened by a fire dubbed Cedar Fire. It was the largest wildland fire in California history. The fire knocked out local communications, leaving his East Coast family anxious and concerned for his safety until they found a series of dramatic articles featuring Nicio's efforts on the website of the The San Francisco Chronicle. The firsthand account of his courageous (if foolhardy) stand conjured up images of heroes and myths that eventually evolved into the children's book "Nicio and Cedar Fire".

Book excerpt: "An exciting vision of the future" --Michael Eric Dyson Everything Is Spiritual is an unexpected and compelling invitation to see your life in a whole new way. We have the great moments of our lives, the highs, those times when we soar, when it all makes sense, when it feels like it all has purpose and meaning. And then there are all those other moments—the lows and aches and failures and struggles and experiences that leave us wondering what the point of it all is. Are our lives ultimately bits and pieces and fragments—you try to find a little peace and hope and then it’s over? Or is there more going on here? In our increasingly polarized and disoriented world, Everything Is Spiritual gives us a radical new take on how it all fits together, how it works, how it’s all connected. Part memoir, part extended riff on the quantum nature of reality, part history of the universe, Rob Bell takes us back through the twists and turns and struggles of his story in order to help us see the larger story so that we can reconnect with our story.

Book The Brief Luminous Flight of the Firefly

Download or read book The Brief Luminous Flight of the Firefly written by Ellen Byerrum and published by Lethal Black Dress Press. This book was released on 2021-12-10 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "It's not like it's murder.""Don't kid yourself, sister. People commit all kinds of crimes for all kinds of reasons. There's murder afoot whenever money is involved."Ambitious and idealistic, Mimi Smith leaves her home out west and pauses her college career to work for the war effort in Washington, D.C. She lands an entry-level stenographer's job at the government office that oversees rationing and black-market activities, and a rented room in Alexandria, Virginia. But Mimi's got bigger plans than laboring as a mere stenographer-she has an eye on a slot as an investigator. When she breaks up a group of drunken servicemen harassing a flashily dressed woman at a dance, her instincts kick in. She saves the young woman and tries to get her back on her feet. It's soon clear that the victim, Kitty Hawkins, is what Mimi's grandmother calls a "magdalen," a lady of the evening Kitty is trying to escape that life and outrun the desperate "quivers" she feels breathing down her neck. It's June 1943, halfway through a world war that feels like it will never end. Rationing, victory gardens, and making do or doing without have all become a patriotic way of life. But the flip side of patriotism is hoarding, profiteering, theft, and black marketeering. And someone in Alexandria is murdering magdalens caught up in selling information and stolen goods. Teaming up with a skeptical local policeman and a country boy soon to enter the Navy, Mimi grapples with life, death, and a killer who has set his sights on her. Firefly is the prequel to the bestselling Crime of Fashion Mysteries, featuring Lacey Smithsonian. Set decades before Lacey plies her trade as a journalist in D.C., Firefly explores Lacey's great aunt Mimi Smith's wartime journey that brought her to Washington, the parallels between the two women, including their love of fashion and the clues people wear without knowing it, and the origins of Mimi's trunk full of mysteries, the trunk Lacey later inherits. And both Mimi and Lacey discover they have a passion for finding out how the story ends.

Book Rusch to Glory

Download or read book Rusch to Glory written by Rebecca Rusch and published by VeloPress. This book was released on 2014-10-01 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rebecca Rusch is one of the great endurance athletes of our time. Known today as the Queen of Pain for her perseverance as a relentlessly fast runner, paddler, and mountain bike racer, Rusch was a normal kid from Chicago who abandoned a predictable life for one of adventure. In her new book Rusch to Glory: Adventure, Risk & Triumph on the Path Less Traveled, Rusch weaves her fascinating life's story among the exotic locales and extreme conditions that forged an extraordinary athlete from ordinary roots. Rusch has run the gauntlet of endurance sports over her career as a professional athlete-- climbing, adventure racing, whitewater rafting, cross-country skiing, and mountain biking--racking up world championships along the way. But while she might seem like just another superhuman playing out a fistful of aces, her empowering story proves that anyone can rise above self-doubt and find their true potential. First turning heads with her rock climbing and paddling skills, Rusch soon found herself spearheading adventure racing teams like Mark Burnett's Eco-Challenge series. As she fought her way through the jungles of Borneo, raced camels across Morocco, threaded the rugged Tian Shan mountains, and river-boarded the Grand Canyon in the dead of winter, she was forced to stare down her own demons. Through it all, Rusch continually redefined her limits, pushing deep into the pain cave and emerging ready for the next great challenge. At age 38, Rusch faced a tough decision: retire or reinvent herself yet again. Determined to go for broke, she shifted her focus to endurance mountain bike racing and rode straight into the record books at a moment when most athletes walk away. Rusch to Glory is more than an epic story of adventure; it is a testament to the rewards of hard work, determination, and resilience on the long road to personal and professional triumph.

Book A Canyon Trilogy

Download or read book A Canyon Trilogy written by Chi Varnado and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 283 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The crime fiction novelist presents his first novella, A Lapse of Memory, based on his short story of the same name. When the mafia wants a mark eliminated, they turn to contract killer James Randall, a.k.a. Richard Johnson, and he usually delivers in spades. But Randall is aging and has developed the early stages of Alzheimer's. When a hit goes horribly wrong, he finds himself on the run, pursued by his former employers. Gritty, mesmerizing, A Lapse of Memory excites us with the chase, while also providing a back-story of a time long gone by. Himself in search of a lost past, the emotionally complex Randall is determined to evade his pursuers. But can he any longer differentiate friend from foe? Can he search out the secrets of his past as the present slips away? The novella is ripe with inventive incidents, is evocative of the present as well as the physical atmosphere of the 1950's, and offers a number of interesting characters. As usual in Curry's work, the presence of the sea and the city is keenly felt and connected to the psychological action of the story.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Fire Outside My Window reveals the story of the Cedar Fire, the largest fire in California’s recorded history, which ravaged the San Diego area in late 2003, burning nearly 280,000 acres, destroying more than 2,200 homes and hundreds of other buildings, and killing 15 people. Leaving her doomed home the night of the catastrophe, the author, Sandra Millers Younger, drove through flames and, along with her husband, was saved by a bobcat that showed her the road she couldn’t see through dense smoke. With this revealing narrative, she takes readers into the heart of an epic firefight, telling the stories of fire managers and air tanker pilots trying to combat a catastrophe bigger than they had ever imagined, and recounting both survivors’ and victims’ desperate efforts to escape flames moving faster than fire engines could drive. And she tells the story of the hapless hunter who got lost in the backcountry, with little water and no cell phone or GPS device, and started a signal fire that caused the calamity.
