Book Japan s Colonial Moment in Southeast Asia 1942 1945

Download or read book Japan s Colonial Moment in Southeast Asia 1942 1945 written by Nakano Satoshi and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-10-03 with total page 485 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first-ever attempt to paint a full-scale portrait of the Japanese Occupation of Southeast Asia during the Asia-Pacific War (1942–5). This book draws on the huge body of available narrative—military documents, bureaucratic records and personal accounts of combatants and civilians, including diaries, memoirs and collected correspondence—most of which have previously been either unknown or unavailable to non-Japanese readers. It examines how the Japanese imperial adventure in Southeast Asia sped up the collapse of the Japanese Empire as a whole, not only through its ultimate military defeat in the region, but also due to its failure as an occupier from the very beginning. Nakano explains the significance of the Japanese Occupation of Southeast Asia as a learning experience for the occupiers, whether soldiers on the frontlines or civilians on the home front. He uses a synthesis, overlay and juxtaposition of a selection of these narratives, to reassemble the narrative as a whole. This brings into focus the outlook of those Japanese who set out for Southeast Asia with the purpose to urge the region’s occupied people to collaborate with Japan to transform the region into an integral part of the Greater East Asia Co-Prosperity Sphere. Many would eventually discover that what required change was Japan and its whole approach to colonial rule, as was realized so quickly in the postwar era. The original Japanese version was published as Tonan Ajia senryo to Nihonjin: Teikoku Nihon no kaitai [The occupation of Southeast Asia and the Japanese: The dismantling of the Japanese Empire]. Tokyo: Iwanami Shoten, 2012. ISBN: 430922542X.

Book Japan s Reluctant Realism

Download or read book Japan s Reluctant Realism written by M. Green and published by Springer. This book was released on 2001-05-17 with total page 356 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Japan's Reluctant Realism , Michael J. Green examines the adjustments of Japanese foreign policy in the decade since the end of the Cold War. Green presents case studies of China, the Korean peninsula, Russia and Central Asia, Southeast Asia, the international financial institutions, and multilateral forums (the United Nations, APEC, and the ARF). In each of these studies, Green considers Japanese objectives; the effectiveness of Japanese diplomacy in achieving those objectives; the domestic and exogenous pressures on policy-making; the degree of convergence or divergence with the United States in both strategy and implementation; and lessons for more effective US - Japan diplomatic cooperation in the future. As Green notes, its bilateral relationship with the United States is at the heart of Japan's foreign policy initiatives, and Japan therefore conducts foreign policy with one eye carefully on Washington. However, Green argues, it is time to recognize Japan as an independent actor in Northeast Asia, and to assess Japanese foreign policy in its own terms.

Book The Japanese Wartime Empire 1931 1945

Download or read book The Japanese Wartime Empire 1931 1945 written by Peter Duus and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2021-07-13 with total page 426 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With this book the editors complete the three-volume series on modern Japanese colonialism and imperialism that began with The Japanese Colonial Empire, 1895-1945 (Princeton, 1983) and The Japanese Informal Empire in China, 1895-1937 (Princeton, 1989). The Japanese military takeover in Manchuria between 1931 and 1932 was a critical turning point in East Asian history. It marked the first surge of Japanese aggression beyond the boundaries of its older colonial empire and set Japan on a collision course with China and Western colonial powers from 1937 through 1945. These essays seek to illuminate some of the more significant processes and institutions during the period when the empire was at war: the creation of a Japanese-dominated East Asian economic bloc centered in northeast Asia, the mobilization of human and physical resources in the older established areas of Japanese colonial rule, and the penetration and occupation of Southeast Asia. Introduced by Peter Duus, the volume contains four sections: Japan's Wartime Empire and the Formal Colonies (Carter J. Eckert and Wan-yao Chou), Japan's Wartime Empire and Northeast Asia (Louise Young, Y. Tak Matsusaka, Ramon H. Myers, and Takafusa Nakamura), Japan's Wartime Empire and Southeast Asia (Mark R. Peattie, E. Bruce Reynolds, and Ken'ichi Goto), and Japan's Wartime Empire in Other Perspectives (George Hicks, Hideo Kobayashi, and L. H. Gann).

Book The Japanese Occupation of Borneo 1941 45

Download or read book The Japanese Occupation of Borneo 1941 45 written by Ooi Keat Gin and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2010-12-17 with total page 291 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Japanese occupation of both British Borneo – Brunei, Sarawak and North Borneo – and Dutch Borneo in 1941 to 1945 is a much understudied subject. Of particular interest is the occupation of Dutch Borneo, governed by the Imperial Japanese Navy that had long-term plans for ‘permanent possession’. This book surveys Borneo under Western colonialism, examines pre-war Japanese interests in Borneo, and analyses the Japanese military invasion and occupation. It goes on to consider the nature of Japanese rule in Borneo, contrasting the different regimes of the Imperial Japanese Army, which ruled the north, and the Navy. A wide range of issues are discussed, including the incorporation of the economy in the Greater East Asia Co-prosperity Sphere and the effects of this on Borneo’s economy. The book also covers issues such as the relationship with the various indigenous inhabitants, with Islam and the Muslim community, and the Chinese, as well as topics of acculturation and propaganda, and major uprisings and mass executions. It examines the impact of the wartime conditions and policies on the local multiethnic peoples and their responses, providing an invaluable contribution to the greater understanding of the significance of the wartime Japanese occupation in the historical development of Borneo.

Book Southeast Asian Minorities in the Wartime Japanese Empire

Download or read book Southeast Asian Minorities in the Wartime Japanese Empire written by Paul H. Kratoska and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-05-13 with total page 265 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Japanese invasion and occupation of southeast Asia provided opportunities for the peoples of the region to pursue a wide range of agendas that had little to do with the larger issues which drove the conflict between Japan and the allies. This book explores how the occupation affected various minority groups in the region. It shows, for example, how in some areas of Burma the withdrawal of established authority led to widespread communal violence; how the Indian and Chinese populations of Malaya and Thailand had extensive and often unpleasant interactions with the Japanese; and how in Java the Chinese population fared much better.

Book Power Through Discourse

Download or read book Power Through Discourse written by Leah Kedar and published by Praeger. This book was released on 1987 with total page 190 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume represents an interdisciplinary approach to the study of language and behavior in both formal public negotiation, as well as less formal communicative interaction settings. Its central theme is that language use plays a crucial role in the attainment and/or exercise of power. The notion of power, in this context, is seen as the measure of one's ability or inability to obtain or maintain personal objectives through discourse. The contributions focus specifically upon interaction between individual discourse strategies and the exercise of power.

Book Thailand and Japan s Southern Advance 1940 1945

Download or read book Thailand and Japan s Southern Advance 1940 1945 written by E. Bruce Reynolds and published by Palgrave Macmillan. This book was released on 1994-03-04 with total page 334 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: '...a fascinating story and is ably told. One key aspect of the book is that it provides an account of events in Bangkok immediately before the outbreak of war' - Antony Best, London School of Economics;'...This thorough account makes excellent reading for anyone who wants to know what went on away from the the battlefronts of World War II.'- Almanac '...Drawing on contemporary English, Thai and Japanese language accounts, Reynolds compellingly argues that Japanese officers and officials on the spot were well aware of their failure to cultivate more than outward sympathy from the Thai...He offers a fascinating account of how Thailand deftly managed to cultivate the Allies while not alienating Japan by pursuing a multitrack, flexible diplomacy...Fine books such as this should be required reading for aspiring Cabinet members to help ward off the selective amnesia that has caused such great embarrassment to Japan and distress among its neighbours.'- Jeff Kingston, Japan Times '...the collection offers a number of interesting observations on the nature of the Pacific War...The most significant issues that Dockrill addresses is that of how Japan views the war in retrospect, a question which not only tells us a lot about how events were seen in Japan in 1941 but is also...a matter still of importance in contemporary East Asian politics.' Antony Best, Intelligence & National Security The crises that marked the dramatic expansion of Japanese rule over Asia posed unique problems for Thailand. The only independent country in Southeast Asia, Thailand was clearly too weak to withstand Japan, but, as a sovereign state, it had the great advantage that it could not be 'liberated' by the Japanese military in the same manner as the European and American colonies. The abilities that had proven so vital in fending off British and French imperialism were also to be essential in dealing with Japan. This study, based on Japanese, Thai, and English language sources - including the Office of Strategic Services files and MAGIC intercepts - examines the circumstances and strategies that led Thailand into a wartime alliance with Japan, Tokyo's efforts to integrate Thailand into the Greater East Asia Co-Prosperity Sphere, and Thai manoeuvers to resist Japan's embrace. Finally, it explains how, during the latter stages of the war, Thailand was able to maintain relations with Japan while surreptitiously establishing links with the Allies.
