Book Epidemiological studies on gastro intestinal nematode infections in chickens

Download or read book Epidemiological studies on gastro intestinal nematode infections in chickens written by Kalyakorn Wongrak and published by Cuvillier Verlag. This book was released on 2014-09-29 with total page 120 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The study results indicated a high prevalence (>99%) of nematode infections with the most prevalent species beingthe caecal worm Heterakis gallinarum (98.5%), followed by the roundworm Ascaridiagalli(96.2%) and the hairworms Capillaria spp. (86.1%). Capillaria spp. were composed of C. obsignata, C. caudinflataand C. bursata. It can be concluded that chickens kept in free-range systems are exposed to a higher risk of nematode infections, even if the animals are kept in a rotational system and/or in small herd sizes. However, no obvious link between high mortality rates and nematode infections could be determined. The high genetic correlation between counts of closely related worm species (e.g., A. galliand H. gallinarum) may indicate the existence of similar/same genetically determined mechanism(s) for controlling these nematodesin chickens. High heritabilities for total worm burden suggest that it is feasible to select hens for nematode resistance. Nematode egg excretion in both naturally occurring and experimental infections follows repeatable diurnal fluctuations which may indicate adaptive strategies of the nematodes to both internal and external environmental factors. Since the analytic sensitivity of egg counts suffers from low faecal egg concentrations, results from the present study suggests that faeces samples taken during daytime hours have a higher diagnostic value.

Book Achieving sustainable production of poultry meat Volume 1

Download or read book Achieving sustainable production of poultry meat Volume 1 written by Steven C. Ricke and published by Burleigh Dodds Science Publishing. This book was released on 2017-01-01 with total page 503 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To meet growing demand, the FAO has estimated that world poultry production needs to grow by 2-3% per year to 2030. Much of the increase in output already achieved has been as a result of improvements in commercial breeds combined with rearing in more intensive production systems. However, more intensive systems and complex supply chains have increased the risk of rapid transmission of animal diseases and zoonoses. Consumer expectations of sensory and nutritional quality have never been higher. At the same time consumers are more concerned about the environmental impact of poultry production as well as animal welfare. Drawing on an international range of expertise, this book reviews research on safety, quality and sustainability issues in poultry production. Part 1 discusses risks from pathogens, detection and safety management on farms and in slaughterhouse operations. Part 2 looks at ways of enhancing the flavour, colour, texture and nutritional quality of poultry meat. Finally, the book reviews the environmental impact of poultry production. Achieving sustainable production of poultry meat Volume 1: Safety, quality and sustainability will be a standard reference for poultry and food scientists in universities, government and other research centres and companies involved in poultry production. It is accompanied by two further volumes which review poultry breeding, nutrition, health and welfare.

Book History of Technology

Download or read book History of Technology written by Ian Inkster and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2016-09-30 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Technical standards have received increasing attention in recent years from historians of science and technology, management theorists and economists. Often, inquiry focuses on the emergence of stability, technical closure and culturally uniform modernity. Yet current literature also emphasizes the durability of localism, heterogeneity and user choice. This collection investigates the apparent tension between these trends using case studies from across the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. The History of Technology addresses tensions between material standards and process standards, explores the distinction between specifying standards and achieving convergence towards them, and examines some of the discontents generated by the reach of standards into 'everyday life'. Includes the Special Issue "By whose standards? Standardization, stability and uniformity in the history of information and electrical technologies"

Download or read book Farm Animal Transport written by Claire A. Weeks and published by MDPI. This book was released on 2021-08-30 with total page 206 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most of the 70 billion animals that are farmed in the world are transported at least once in their lives. For improved animal welfare, sustainability, and profitability it is important that everyone involved in the transportation process takes responsibility for doing a good job. This may require legislation and assurance schemes backed up by inspections and driven by consumer awareness and demand. All aspects of the transportation process, including preparation for transport, handling during loading and unloading, handler and driver training, stocking density on the transport container, journey length, and weather have an effect on animal welfare, meat quality, health after transport, and even mortality during transit. These topics are covered in the papers and reviews in this book together with related aspects such as consumer perceptions of animal transport, cleaning of transport coops, and consideration of on-farm slaughter to obviate the need for transport to an abattoir. The book adds to the knowledge of farm animal transport and highlights areas for future research and improved practice.

Book Organic Poultry Farming 101

Download or read book Organic Poultry Farming 101 written by Raph Billy and published by Independently Published. This book was released on 2024-03-22 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The sustainable and all-encompassing method of growing chickens that puts an emphasis on human health, environmental sustainability, and animal welfare is known as organic poultry farming. We will examine the essential ideas, advantages, and difficulties of raising organic poultry in this chapter. 1.1 What is farming poultry organically? Raising chickens, ducks, turkeys, and other poultry species in conformity with organic standards and principles is known as organic poultry farming. The use of synthetic chemicals, antibiotics, genetically modified organisms (GMOs), and other artificial inputs in the manufacturing process is usually prohibited by these regulations. Rather, to enhance the health and welfare of their birds, organic poultry producers depend on natural and organic means. 1.2 Organic Poultry Farming Principles Several fundamental ideas underpin organic chicken farming: 1.2.1 Care for Animals: For organic poultry producers, the well-being, comfort, and instinctive behavior of their birds come first. They provide the flock plenty of room to roam about, access to the outside world, and hygienic living arrangements to guarantee their wellbeing. 1.2.2 Care of the Environment: The focus of organic poultry production is on environmentally friendly, sustainable methods. This entails lowering pollution, preserving resources, and fostering biodiversity in the agricultural setting. 1.2.3 Organic Sources: To maintain the health and immunity of their birds, organic chicken producers employ natural inputs including probiotics, herbal supplements, and organic feed. They stay away from using growth accelerators, herbicides, and artificial chemicals. 1.3 Advantages of Raising Organic Poultry There are several advantages to raising chickens organically for customers, farmers, and the environment. 1.3.1 Product Healthier: Because organic chicken products don't include artificial chemicals or antibiotics, eating them is safer and healthier. Additionally, they often include greater levels of vitamins, minerals, and omega-3 fatty acids among other nutrients. 1.3.2 Preservation of the Environment: Soil, water, and air quality are protected by organic poultry farming, which prioritizes sustainable techniques. It encourages biodiversity on the farm and lessens the need for chemical inputs. 1.3.3 Care for Animals: Birds raised at organic chicken farms are given a more compassionate and natural environment, which reduces stress and enables them to display their natural behaviors. 1.3.4 Need in the Market: The market for organic poultry products is expanding as a result of increased consumer knowledge of the advantages organic goods provide for their health and the environment. Farmers of organic poultry now have the chance to sell their produce at exclusive marketplaces and for a higher price.

Book Global Trade Conference on Aquaculture

Download or read book Global Trade Conference on Aquaculture written by Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations and published by Food & Agriculture Org.. This book was released on 2007 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The conference was developed in five sessions. In the first session, "Aquaculture Growing Strength", an overview on production and trade was followed by five commodity presentations showing the success in shrimp, salmon, tilapia, catfish and bivalve aquaculture. The second session on "Challenges" highlighted the current and future challenges facing the sector. These included challenges related to assuring food safety in aquaculture products, maintaining and improving consumers' perceptions of the quality and environmental acceptability of aquaculture, improving aquatic animal health management, addressing issues related to feed quality and availability, and improving the view investors take to assure economic and financial sustainability. During the third session, the "Advantages and Opportunities" of aquaculture were covered by taking into account the globalization process and the requirements of processors and the food service and retail sectors, which all seem to have a preference for aquaculture products under special conditions. Seafood and health benefits, and the potential offered new species were seen as driving factors in the aquaculture sector. The opportunities and challenges for the small-scale fish farmers in Southeast Asia were also considered. The fourth session was fully dedicated to the aquaculture sector in China, with presentations on the domestic market, the export potential, safety and quality inspection and China's role in reprocessing seafood for re-export to the global market. In the last session on "Progress - The Future", the future developments expected for aquaculture were covered. Here the interaction between capture fisheries and aquaculture was analyzed and also presented in a case study on wild and aquacultured salmon. Aquaculture was viewed within the context of other intensive animal production systems. The enormous potential of the technical innovations in aquaculture compared to capture fisheries was highlighted under the term of "Blue revolution". The last session was closed with a description of the political framework required to allow for the sustainable development of aquaculture.
