Book National Health Services of Western Europe

Download or read book National Health Services of Western Europe written by Guido Giarelli and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-08-14 with total page 291 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book draws on research within neo-Weberian and neo-institutionalist perspectives to critically analyse National Health Services (NHSs) in Western Europe. Exploring the challenges posed by neo-liberal policies, it also looks at the impact of the role of the state, the medical profession, the public and the medical–industrial complex in their development. Bringing together a top-line range of expert international contributors, this book includes national studies from three European macro-regions: Britain, Scandinavia and the Mediterranean. In the first part, the NHSs of each country considered are examined historically and in a contemporary context in face of emerging challenges – from cost containment to governance. The second part looks across the macro-regions at the influence of the main actors involved in their evolution and sustainability. Comparing and contrasting the NHSs of Western Europe, the book ends with a discussion of future directions. This book makes a vital contribution at a time when health services globally have been under great pressure in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic. It is written for academics and advanced students of healthcare, management, public policy, social policy and sociology – in addition to health professionals and policymakers.

Book The Provision of Cross border Health Services for Wales

Download or read book The Provision of Cross border Health Services for Wales written by Great Britain: Parliament: House of Commons: Welsh Affairs Committee and published by The Stationery Office. This book was released on 2009 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Given the divergence in health policy between England and Wales, and the significant number of patients who cross the border for treatment, the Welsh Affairs Committee examined the interface between the two systems and the effectiveness of co-ordination between the Department for Health and the Welsh Assembly Government. It wanted to discover whether cross-border patients are treated fairly and whether the Welsh Assembly Government and the Department of Health consider the border in the development of the diverging policy environment. The Committee was aware of significant confusion amongst patients, for example in knowing what they are entitled to receive from their health service and that cross-border providers were being disadvantaged by the need to cope with two separate funding and commissioning schemes. The Committee's interim report on this topic (HC 870, session 2007-08, ISBN 9780215521682) concluded that four key criteria should be established in cross-border health policy: clinical excellence as close to home as possible; border-proofing of policy and practice; cross-border citizen engagement; and transparent and accountable co-operation between localities, regions and governments. This report returns to these key criteria. The Committee is very disappointed that a protocol on cross-border health services has not been agreed, further evidence of a clear lack of co-ordination between the UK and Welsh Assembly governments and which leaves clinicians and administrators in a strained position and risks adversely affecting patients as a result of cross-border commissioning and funding problems. Better information for patients must be provided. The Committee finds the Department of Health's delay in responding to its interim report until some 6 months after publication to be unacceptable.

Book Equality and Public Policy

Download or read book Equality and Public Policy written by Paul Chaney and published by University of Wales Press. This book was released on 2011-01-31 with total page 235 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Equality of opportunity is a contested concept. It evokes strong emotions from proponents and opponents alike. Enduring issues of inequality and discrimination mean that it remains at the forefront of political priorities in the twenty-first century. Traditional analyses tend to focus on developments at the level of the unitary state or European Union. In contrast, this book underlines the salience of multi-level governance and offers the first detailed comparative analysis of contemporary efforts to promote equality of opportunity in the wake of constitutional reform in the UK. It presents a summary of social theory on equalities in relation to gender, and a full range of social groups and identities - such as disability, ethnicity, sexual orientation and age. It outlines the contemporary evidence base relating to patterns and processes of inequality in the 'devolved' nations. A 'governance perspective' is also advanced; one that details how constitutional law establishing the devolved legislatures contains equality clauses that enable and empower government to promote equality in public policy and law. Analysis reveals the development of distinctive regulatory structures and equalities policy lobbies in each territory. Overall, this volume charts the development of divergent legal rights and public policy on the promotion of equality in the wake of constitutional reform in the UK. Notwithstanding ongoing challenges, it is argued that the move to quasi-federalism is significant for it marks a shift from the predominant, centralised administration of social policy witnessed throughout the twentieth century, to divergent approaches designed to address contrasting socio-economic patterns and processes in Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland.

Book Management for Child Health Services

Download or read book Management for Child Health Services written by Norman T. Begg and published by Springer. This book was released on 2013-12-20 with total page 348 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The provision of health care services for children is central to improving the nation's health and remains a key feature of every government's policy. This concept has been recognised in the United Kingdom since nineteenth century visionaries prompted increasing interest in the welfare of the country's school children. Successive generations have built upon these foundations and have been diligent in promoting effective service development. It is right that we follow their example, for the young have only one chance of a healthy upbringing. They are totally dependent on others to provide the right services, which are sensitive enough to address individual needs, yet sufficiently comprehensive to enable as many children as possible to reach adulthood with their potential uncom promised by illness. Our objective must be to enable today's children to enjoy a healthy childhood and to equip them to maximise the benefits of a healthy lifestyle in the years to come. We are making an essential investment in the future and must appreciate the challenges which come with that commitment. We need a multi-professional approach, positive management skills and the adoption of good management practice. I therefore welcome this book on managing child health services and commend the initiative of its editors in bringing together such an impressive team of contributors from different disciplines.
