Book Milford Haven and Neyland Branches

Download or read book Milford Haven and Neyland Branches written by John Hodge and published by Pen and Sword Transport. This book was released on 2022-09-15 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Part of the West Wales Railways series, this book starts at Clarbeston Road, covers the oil-rich town of Milford Haven, where oil refineries were opened mostly in the 1960s in association with the deep-water port, to accommodate super tankers from the Middle East, though the development of other products and pipelines in the oil world has seen the number of oil terminals there currently reduced to one at Robeston. Neyland was the original West Wales terminus of the GWR, after plans to develop Fishguard were delayed until 1906, and saw several through Passenger and Parcels trains to Paddington until 1963, when through passenger trains between Paddington and West Wales were terminated at Swansea with a DMU service beyond. The Neyland branch from Johnston was closed under the Beeching cuts of 1964, involving the closure of the important Motive Power Depot whose allocation of County Class engines is well illustrated, though the effect of this was largely nullified by the arrival of the diesel age.

Carter joined with Dick Farrar and John Williams to form the CFW Construction Company in Fayetteville, Tennessee, 1952. Named for the partners, CFW expanded into building plants, roads, tunnels, bridges, and more. Within forty years the company grew to five offices, 14 subsidiaries, a thousand pieces of equipment, and a proud workforce of more than 1,500 across a dozen states. Then came the scandals. By the end of the 20thcentury, CFW was gone, and the lives of everybody had changed. Dick Farrar’s son was there for the best and the worst. Now he’s written the definitive history, not just about a company, but a region and its people. With nearly a hundred restored photos, most in color, Farrar, Jr., tells the true story, naming names and documenting the details. The Rise and Fall of a Construction Giantis a keepsake, a historical record, the chronicle of an era, a compelling story told by the man at its center in the end.

Book The Everyday Life of an Algorithm

Download or read book The Everyday Life of an Algorithm written by Daniel Neyland and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-12-17 with total page 151 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This open access book begins with an algorithm–a set of IF...THEN rules used in the development of a new, ethical, video surveillance architecture for transport hubs. Readers are invited to follow the algorithm over three years, charting its everyday life. Questions of ethics, transparency, accountability and market value must be grasped by the algorithm in a series of ever more demanding forms of experimentation. Here the algorithm must prove its ability to get a grip on everyday life if it is to become an ordinary feature of the settings where it is being put to work. Through investigating the everyday life of the algorithm, the book opens a conversation with existing social science research that tends to focus on the power and opacity of algorithms. In this book we have unique access to the algorithm’s design, development and testing, but can also bear witness to its fragility and dependency on others.

Book Can Markets Solve Problems

Download or read book Can Markets Solve Problems written by Daniel Neyland and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2019-11-05 with total page 334 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A provocative analysis of market-based interventions into public problems and the consequences. Market-based interventions have been used in attempts to solve numerous public problems, from education to healthcare and from climate change to privacy. Scholars have responded persuasively through critiques of neoliberalism. In Can Markets Solve Problems? Daniel Neyland, Véra Ehrenstein, and Sveta Milyaeva propose a different route forward. There is no single entity knowable as “the market,” the authors argue. Instead, they examine in detail the devices, relations, and practices that underpin these market-based interventions. Drawing on recent work in science and technology studies (STS), each chapter focuses on a different intervention and critically explores the market sensibility around which it is organized. Trade and exchange, competition, property and ownership, and investment and return all become the focus of a thorough exploration of what it means to intervene in public problems, how problems are composed, and how solutions are continually reworked. Can Markets Solve Problems? offers the first book-length STS enquiry into markets and public problems. Weaving together rich empirical descriptions and conceptual discussions, the book provides in-depth insights into the workings of these markets, their continuous evolution, and the consequences. The result is a new avenue of critical inquiry that moves between the details of specific policies and the always-emerging, collective features of this landscape of intervention.
