Download or read book Next to leading Order 2 jet Production at the LHC written by and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 49 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We present next-to-leading-order QCD predictions for cross sections and for a comprehensive set of distributions in ??+2-jet production at the Large Hadron Collider. We consider the contributions from loop amplitudes for two photons and four gluons, but we neglect top quarks. We use BlackHat together with SHERPA to carry out the computation. We use a Frixione cone isolation for the photons. We study standard sets of cuts on the jets and the photons and also sets of cuts appropriate for studying backgrounds to Higgs-boson production via vector-boson fusion.

Book excerpt: This book reviews the latest experimental results on jet physics from proton-proton collisons at the LHC. Jets allow to determine the strong coupling constant over a wide range of energies up the highest ones possible so far, and to constrain the gluon parton distribution of the proton, both of which are important uncertainties on theory predictions in general and for the Higgs boson in particular.A novel approach in this book is to categorize the examined quantities according to the types of absolute, ratio, or shape measurements and to explain in detail the advantages and differences. Including numerous illustrations and tables the physics message and impact of each observable is clearly elaborated.

Book Jet Production at Hadron Colliders

Download or read book Jet Production at Hadron Colliders written by Teppo Tapani Jouttenus and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 104 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hadronic jets feature in many final states of interest in modern collider experiments. They form a significant Standard Model background for many proposed new physics processes and also probe QCD interactions at several different scales. At high energies incoming protons produce beam jets. Correctly accounting for the beam and central jets is critical to precise understanding of hadronic final states at the Large Hadron Collider. We study jet cross sections as a function of the shape of both beam and central jets. This work focuses on measuring jet mass but our methods can be applied to other jet shape variables as well. Measuring jet mass introduces additional scales to the collision process and these scales produce large logarithms that need to be resummed. Factorizing the cross section into hard, jet, beam, and soft functions enables such resummation. We begin by studying jet production at e + e- collisions in order to focus on the effects of jet algorithms. These results can be carried over to the more complicated case of hadron collisions. We use the Sterman-Weinberg algorithm as a specific example and derive an expression for the quark jet function. Turning to hadron colliders, we show how the N-jettiness event shape divides phase space into N +2 regions, each containing one central or beam jet. Thus, N-jettiness works as a jet algorithm. Using a geometric measure gives central jets with circular boundaries. We then give a factorization theorem for the cross section fully differential in the mass of each jet, and compute the corresponding soft function at next-to-leading order (NLO). We use a method of hemisphere decomposition, which can also be applied to calculate N-jet soft functions defined with other jet algorithms. Our calculation of the N-jettiness soft function provides the final missing ingredient to extend NLO cross sections to resunmmed predictions at next-to-next-to-leading logarithmic order. We study the production of an exclusive jet together with a Standard Model Higgs boson. Based on theoretical reasons and agreement between our calculation and data from the ATLAS collaboration, we argue that our results for the jet mass spectrum are a good approximation also for inclusive jet production and other hard processes.

Book Next to Leading Order Predictions for W 3 Jet Distributions at Hadron Colliders

Download or read book Next to Leading Order Predictions for W 3 Jet Distributions at Hadron Colliders written by and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 64 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We present next-to-leading order QCD predictions for a variety of distributions in W + 3-jet production at both the Tevatron and the Large Hadron Collider. We include all subprocesses and incorporate the decay of the W boson into leptons. Our results are in excellent agreement with existing Tevatron data and provide the first quantitatively precise next-to-leading order predictions for the LHC. We include all terms in an expansion in the number of colors, confirming that the specific leading-color approximation used in our previous study is accurate to within three percent. The dependence of the cross section on renormalization and factorization scales is reduced significantly with respect to a leading-order calculation. We study different dynamical scale choices, and find that the total transverse energy is significantly better than choices used in previous phenomenological studies. We compute the one-loop matrix elements using on-shell methods, as numerically implemented in the BlackHat code. The remaining parts of the calculation, including generation of the real-emission contributions and integration over phase space, are handled by the SHERPA package.

Book Measurement of Higgs Boson Production Cross Sections in the Diphoton Channel

Download or read book Measurement of Higgs Boson Production Cross Sections in the Diphoton Channel written by Ahmed Tarek Abouelfadl Mohamed and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-11-12 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis presents the measurement of the Higgs boson cross section in the diphoton decay channel. The measurement relies on proton-proton collision data at a center-of-mass energy √s = 13 TeV recorded by the ATLAS experiment at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). The collected data correspond to the full Run-2 dataset with an integrated luminosity of 139 fb-1. The measured cross sections are used to constrain anomalous Higgs boson interactions in the Effective Field Theory (EFT) framework. The results presented in this thesis represent a reduction by a factor 2 of the different photon and jet energy scale and resolution systematic uncertainties with respect to the previous ATLAS publication. The thesis details the calibration of electron and photon energies in ATLAS, in particular the measurement of the presampler energy scale and the estimation of its systematic uncertainty. This calibration was used to perform a measurement of the Higgs boson mass in the H → γγ and H → 4l channels using the 36 fb−1 dataset.

Book Beyond Standard Model Phenomenology at the LHC

Download or read book Beyond Standard Model Phenomenology at the LHC written by Priscila de Aquino and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-09-16 with total page 166 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis provides an introduction to the physics of the Standard Model and beyond, and to the methods used to analyse Large Hadron Collider (LHC) data. The 'hierarchy problem', astrophysical data and experiments on neutrinos indicate that new physics can be expected at the now accessible TeV scale. This work investigates extensions of the Standard Model with gravitons and gravitinos (in the context of supergravity). The production of these particles in association with jets is studied as one of the most promising avenues for researching new physics at the LHC. Advanced simulation techniques and tools, such as algorithms allowing the computation of Feynman graphs and helicity amplitudes are first developed and then employed.

Book Di photon Production at the LHC

Download or read book Di photon Production at the LHC written by and published by . This book was released on 2003 with total page 4 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The standard model production of two photons is one of the most important backgrounds to light Higgs boson production at the LHC. In this talk we discuss the di-photon background, with emphasis on the effects of the recently calculated next-to-leading-order (NLO) corrections to the gluon-gluon-initiated component. We find that the K-factor for this component is smaller than that for the analogous gg → H process, and that the correction to the total irreducible di-photon production is modest. We also investigate ways to enhance the statistical significance of the Higgs signal in the [gamma][gamma] channel.

Book Future Of The Large Hadron Collider The A Super accelerator With Multiple Possible Lives

Download or read book Future Of The Large Hadron Collider The A Super accelerator With Multiple Possible Lives written by Oliver Bruning and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2023-08-08 with total page 455 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Large Hadron Collider (LHC) is the highest energy collider ever built. It resides near Geneva in a tunnel 3.8m wide, with a circumference of 26.7km, which was excavated in 1983-1988 to initially house the electron-positron collider LEP. The LHC was approved in 1995, and it took until 2010 for reliable operation. By now, a larger set of larger integrated luminosities have been accumulated for physics analyses in the four collider experiments: ATLAS, CMS, LHCb and ALICE.The LHC operates with an extended cryogenic plant, using a multi-stage injection system comprising the PS and SPS accelerators (still in use for particle physics experiments at lower energies). The beams are guided by 1232 superconducting high field dipole magnets.Intense works are underway in preparation of the High Luminosity LHC, aimed at upgrading the LHC and detectors for collecting ten times more luminosity, and extending the collider life to the early 2040's. So far, the (HL-)LHC project represents a cumulation of around one hundred thousand person-years of innovative work by technicians, engineers, and physicists from all over the world; probably the largest scientific effort ever in the history of humanity. The book is driven by the realisation of the unique value of this accelerator complex and by the recognition of the status of high energy physics, described by a Standard Model — which still leaves too many questions unanswered to be the appropriate theory of elementary particles and their interactions.Following the Introduction are: three chapters which focus on the initial decade of operation, leading to the celebrated discovery of the Higgs Boson, on the techniques and physics of the luminosity upgrade, and finally on major options - of using the LHC in a concurrent, power economic, electron-hadron scattering mode, when upgraded to higher energies or eventually as an injector for the next big machine. The various technical and physics chapters, provided by 61 authors, characterise the fascinating opportunities the LHC offers for the next two decades ahead (possibly longer), with the goal to substantially advance our understanding of nature.
