I won't answer that in my book, but, what I will do is give the reader the tools, even the skills, to make that decision for themselves. I have been living and working in Russia since 1994. This book is like a crash course on Russia and what makes Russia do what Russia does. The story does not unfold in a strict flow of time--it is my life and my thoughts and they appear here as they were needed to help me to better understand my "Russian journey," to answer the questions--what is Russia and why am I here?After graduating from high school in 1985, I learned Russian at the Defense Language Institute in Monterey, California and became a Russian linguist. In 1990. as a 22-year old student at Rutgers University, I was rambunctious and determined to change the world. Instead, I ended up in Leningrad--the Northern Capital of the Soviet Union. It was love at first site. Shortly after the failed coup in Moscow in August 1991, I returned and began my "life" in a Soviet-Russian context. I left again for graduate school at The School of International and Public Affairs at Columbia University. With a Master's in my hands, I was filled with the best intentions returning to help the struggling country survive the very difficult period of transition. Grants from the World Bank, Echoing Green and other funds fueled my vision and sure, my "two-cents" might have helped a bit; often it seems, though, that Russia was more helpful in my own survival. Having learned to think, feel, live and express myself in a post-Soviet world that was at times harsh and unforgiving, my 29 years in Russia have never been ones void of adventure.Despite having built major companies and leading brands in the post-Soviet space, I never set out to make lots of money like so many before and after me. My journey has been a love affair with a city that lured me to it since I was as young as ten. Those whispers of history called and called. Today, I am 53 years old and each day surviving Russia has been as unique as that first overcast evening at the Finnish border on June 15, 1990. There always seems to be a backdrop for everything in the country that just somehow makes you stop, take notice and say--Whoa, cool. I have survived three divorces, the death of both parents, grandmothers, the death of a brother and even the loss of a prematurely born child. I had a café called "The Brooklyn Bridge" practically stolen from me by the mafia and my own employees; and yet, here I am still trying to make the city a bit better, a bit more livable. My story is not a political one, however, but one about normal Russians who have crossed my path over the past 29 years. This story also does not delve into my professional accomplishments of the past 15 years (since 2005) despite the "amazing" level some of them have risen to. One thing that was of particular significance for me professionally, however, was the creation of Russia House in Davos during the World Economic Forum's Annual Meeting (2016-2018). Russia was officially avoiding Davos and I kept the country present on this world stage by launching "my" version of Russia. "White Nights and Dark Days" has helped me answer the question so many Americans have asked since I first set out for Russia in 1994--"what the hell are you doing in Russia?" I have asked myself this same question countless times --it seems that I might have actually stumbled an answer. If you like to explore other cultures then this book is for you. If you want to learn how to succeed professionally in a foreign culture, give this a read. Book excerpt: In January 1914 I visited Petersburg and Moscow for a couple of weeks; in September 1920 I was asked to repeat this visit by Mr. Kameney, of the Russian Trade Delegation in London. I snatched at this suggestion, and went to Russia at the end of September with my son, who speaks a little Russian. We spent a fortnight and a day in Russia, passing most of our time in Petersburg, where we went about freely by ourselves, and were shown nearly everything we asked to see. We visited Moscow, and I had a long conversation with Mr. Lenin, which I shall relate. In Petersburg I did not stay at the Hotel International, to which foreign visitors are usually sent, but with my old friend, Maxim Gorky. The guide and interpreter assigned to assist us was a lady I had met in Russia in 1914, the niece of a former Russian Ambassador to London. She was educated at Newnham, she has been imprisoned five times by the Bolshevist Government, she is not allowed to leave Petersburg because of an attempt to cross the frontier to her children in Esthonia, and she was, therefore, the last person likely to lend herself to any attempt to hoodwink me. I mention this because on every hand at home and in Russia I had been told that the most elaborate camouflage of realities would go on, and that I should be kept in blinkers throughout my visit.As a matter of fact, the harsh and terrible realities of the situation in Russia cannot be camouflaged. In the case of special delegations, perhaps, a certain distracting tumult of receptions, bands, and speeches may be possible, and may be attempted. But it is hardly possible to dress up two large cities for the benefit of two stray visitors, wandering observantly often in different directions. Naturally, when one demands to see a school or a prison one is not shown the worst. Any country would in the circumstances show the best it had, and Soviet Russia is no exception. One can allow for that.Our dominant impression of things Russian is an impression of a vast irreparable breakdown. The great monarchy that was here in 1914 and the administrative, social, financial, and commercial systems connected with it have, under the strains of six years of incessant war, fallen down and smashed utterly. Never in all history has there been so great a débâcle before. The fact of the Revolution is, to our minds, altogether dwarfed by the fact of this downfall. By its own inherent rottenness and by the thrusts and strains of aggressive imperialism the Russian part of the old 4civilised world that existed before 1914 fell, and is now gone. The peasant, who was the base of the old pyramid, remains upon the land, living very much as he has always lived. Everything else is broken down, or is breaking down.

All I know is that there is an exciting world out there which I want to explore. About the AuthorLawrence Bransby has taught English to both high and primary school children throughout his life, often taking his personal experience of working with young children and teenagers as the starting point of his novels - especially during the break-up of the hated Apartheid regime in South Africa when the all-white school he taught at became multi-racial.Of the eight teenage novels he has written, four have won literary prizes and one short-listed. Twice his novels were chosen by Book Chat as South African Children's Books of the Year (Homeward Bound and A Mountaintop Experience). It is not so easy to take the long view of socioeconomic history when you are participating in a revolution. For that reason, Russian economist Yegor Gaidar put aside an early version of this work to take up a series of government positions—as Minister of Finance and as Boris Yeltsin's acting Prime Minister—in the early 1990s. In government, Gaidar shepherded Russia through its transition to a market economy after years of socialism. Once out of government, Gaidar turned again to his consideration of Russia's economic history and long-term economic and political challenges. This book, revised and updated shortly before his death in 2009, is the result. Gaidar's account of long-term socioeconomic trends puts his country in historical context and outlines problems faced by Russia (and other developing economies) that more developed countries have already encountered: aging population, migration, evolution of the system of social protection, changes in the armed forces, and balancing stability and flexibility in democratic institutions.
