Book excerpt: The EU is in deep trouble. As the eurozone crisis keeps raging on, the European dream lies shattered on the ground. Euroscepticism and nationalism are on the rise, tens of millions are unemployed, Great Britain is heading for the exit door, while Russia flexes its muscles and the Middle East burns. Is there any hopeful future for the European Union? Are we going to lose the race with the BRICS? Will Europeans ever truly engage with the EU institutes in Brussels? Next Europe gives some compelling answers to the big questions of our time. ‘EU Watcher’ Joop Hazenberg, a young Dutch writer who has been based in Brussels since early 2013, takes the reader on a venture across the globe to gain insight into the position of Europe in the 21st century. His findings are surprising. The old continent is stronger and richer than we are inclined to think. Though the EU is in a mess, so is the rest of the world. Many of the rising giants will stumble and may even fall before they can do Europe harm. But it is also true that we are no longer the coolest dudes on the planet and that new (and old) dangers threaten our security and well-being. Based on extensive research and interviews with leading experts, Next Europe soothes the unease that looms over our future. Joop Hazenberg also formulates a bold and strong agenda for reform of the EU. If we want to survive the coming age of uncertainty and tectonic shifts, then the European Union needs a restart. Not only in Brussels, but also in the capillaries of our society. By acting now, Europe could become, once again, a leading continent. Next Europe is the starting point for a better understanding of our world, whether you are a student, Commission bureaucrat, a voter for UKIP or a Chinese businessman. “A spirited and courageous work” - Jonathan Holslag, Professor of International Politics at the Free University in Brussels “Joop Hazenberg is a young thinker with the wisdom to realise that Europe has taken a wrong turn and the courage to want to change things” - Philippe Legrain, author of European Spring: Why Our Economies and Politics are in a Mess and How to Put Them Right

Book Europe Toward the Next Enlargement

Download or read book Europe Toward the Next Enlargement written by P. Coffey and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 243 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the third volume in the new series of books on International Regional Economic Integration published by Kluwer Academic Publishers. The Editor begins his examination with an extensive introduction which emphasizes the historic nature of the next enlargement of the European Union. The point of reference for enlargement is the European Commission's Agenda 2000, which covers all the policy areas which the new Member States will have to accept. Although this document is a very important one, it does not pay enough attention to the necessary policy changes and institutional changes which should be made in advance of enlargement. This volume tries to rectify this oversight by offering an assessment of the costs and benefits of enlargement to present and future EU Member States. In view of the importance of all these considerations, special attention is paid to the possible implications of the weak compromises made at the much-heralded Berlin Conference, held in March 1999. To that end, the volume presents an examination of the policy and institutional changes which must be made in advance of enlargement. The following major areas are covered, since with the exception of CAP, they would, in future years, have the most influence on the present and future EU Member States. These areas are: The economic and monetary union and the Euro; Enlarging the European Union: Is Agenda 2000 a guiding star for the new millennium? Regional policy; The impact of the single market on the big European countries - possible consequences for enlargement; and The financial markets.

Book The Transformation of EU Competition Law Next Generation Issues

Download or read book The Transformation of EU Competition Law Next Generation Issues written by Adina Claici and published by Kluwer Law International B.V.. This book was released on 2023-05-12 with total page 441 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The controversy surrounding EU competition rules has grown in recent years. Pressure from such phenomena as the COVID-19 pandemic, climate change and the digital economy have fostered a fragmentation in the interpretation of the rules at both national and EU levels. This volume takes stock of the current situation, assessing the successes and failures of the prevailing ‘modernisation’ policy and setting forth a range of potential legal adaptations designed to offer the right responses to a rapidly changing world. The book’s contributions are based on papers delivered at the 2022 Annual Conference of the Global Competition Law Center (GCLC) at the College of Europe in Bruges. The authors include prominent practitioners and academics, members of the European Commission, representatives of national competition authorities, and judges from both EU and national courts. They address such salient issues as the following: free competition versus ‘regulated competition’ as alternative or complementary models; new methods for the identification of consumer harm and benefits; sui generis competition law regimes for specific sectors; State aid enforcement and crisis management; and the green and digital objectives and their legal and political implications. Taken together, the essays provide extensive treatment of the EU Courts’ jurisprudence and the literature in the field. For practitioners, policymakers and academics working with competition law, the book will clearly explain the new competencies of the Commission, raise awareness of the latest case law on the analysis of effects, and ensure a forward-looking approach to competition law enforcement in Europe.

Book The RFID Roadmap The Next Steps for Europe

Download or read book The RFID Roadmap The Next Steps for Europe written by Gerd Wolfram and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2008-08-09 with total page 219 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: RFID is a key technology for Europe. Today there is a noticeable shift away from the days of RFID pilot projects, and towards a time where organisations are looking to RFID to drive efficiency and innovation. Although Europe is a leading player in the world of RFID technology, several challenges which are preventing RFID from reaching its full potential need to be addressed. To further the advancement of this technology, coordinated European efforts need to be promoted, specifically in the areas of standardisation, user guidelines, legislation, technology development, and research and development. These themes have been analysed, and clear recommendations have been derived, stating what the different RFID stakeholders can do to support the technology. This book is aimed at decision makers in all fields of society, e.g. in companies, politics, business associations, etc. The publication is a summary of the results of the coordination action CE RFID - "Coordinating European Efforts in the RFID Value Chain" - and is a network of European RFID technology providers, vendors and end users. It aims at promoting the use of RFID technology and supporting further development. The project was funded by the European Commission under the 6th Framework Programme.

Book Next Generation EU Cities

Download or read book Next Generation EU Cities written by Anna Lisa Boni and published by Ledizioni. This book was released on 2022-01-17 with total page 106 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As the world enters a new year, the Covid-19 pandemic is still upsetting our daily lives. And as 75% of EU citizens live in urban areas, cities are the most prominent stage both for responding to the health crisis, and for seizing opportunities to recover and move forward. Meanwhile, in 2020, EU countries agreed to Next Generation EU, a €750 billion recovery package that represents a once-in-a-generation opportunity. This report argues that cities should be given more say over how post-pandemic national recovery plans pan out between here and 2026, when all projects are supposed to be wrapping up. Indeed, the success of the EU recovery plans will hinge upon what cities do, or they don’t do over the next five years. How are cities rethinking their role within the “twin” green and digital transitions? How can they achieve gender parity, reduce inequalities, and preserve a vibrant cultural life?

Yet, despite the repeated interaction, fundamental assumptions about security and defence remain remarkably distinct across European nations. This book offers a comparative analysis of the security and defence policies of all 27 EU member states and Turkey, drawing on the concept of ‘strategic culture’, in order to examine the chances and obstacles for closer security and defence cooperation across the continent. Book Details:
  • Author : Andrew Duff
  • Publisher : Spinelli Group
  • Release : 2018-01-02
  • ISBN : 1981876995
  • Pages : 296 pages

Download or read book On Governing Europe written by Andrew Duff and published by Spinelli Group. This book was released on 2018-01-02 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Here is the story of the European Union by one of its leading thinkers. Andrew Duff describes how the EU was born at a time when federalism was seen as the only way to lasting peace, but how continuing tension between federalists and nationalists has left the Union unable to fulfil its promise. The author argues that the rise of impressive institutions such as the European Parliament, Bank and Court has not been matched by the emergence of a capable democratic executive: so the problem of weak governance at the European level must be rectified if the risk of illegitimacy is not to grow. In his career as a noted politician and commentator, Andrew Duff has worked towards the goal of federal union. He regrets Brexit but is not surprised by it, and argues that if the remaining EU makes a success of the federal experiment, the British may in due time be back.
