Book excerpt: "In the vein of Dave Cullen's Columbine, the first comprehensive account of the Sandy Hook tragedy--with exclusive new reporting that chronicles the horrific events of December 14, 2012, including new insight into the dark mind of gunman Adam Lanza. Drawing on hundreds of interviews and a decade's worth of emails from Lanza's mother to close friends that chronicled his slow slide into mental illness, Newtown pieces together the perfect storm that led to this unspeakable act of violence that shattered so many lives. Newtown explores the two central theories that have permeated the media since the attack: some claim Lanza suffered from severe mental illness, while others insist that, far from being a random act of insanity, this was a meticulously thought out, premeditated attack at least two years in the making by a violent video-gamer so obsessed with "glory kills" and researching mass murderers that he was willing to go to any length to attain the top score. Lanza's dark descent from a young boy with adjustment disorders to a calculating killer is interwoven with the Newtown massacre as it unfolded at the time, told from the points of view of eye witnesses, survivors, parents of victims, first responders, and Adam's relatives. A definitive account of a tragedy that shook a nation, Newtown features exclusive material including initial misinformation reported by the media and commentary on how this catastrophic event became a lightning rod for political agendas, much like Columbine did more than a decade ago"--

Book excerpt: Nick Ortner, founder of the Tapping World Summit and best-selling filmmaker of The Tapping Solution, is at the forefront of a new healing movement. In his upcoming book, The Tapping Solution, he gives readers everything they need to successfully start using the powerful practice of tapping – or Emotional Freedom Techniques (EFT). Tapping is one of the fastest and easiest ways to address both the emotional and physical problems that tend to hamper our lives. Using the energy meridians of the body, practitioners tap on specific points while focusing on particular negative emotions or physical sensations. The tapping helps calm the nervous system to restore the balance of energy in the body, and in turn rewire the brain to respond in healthy ways. This kind of conditioning can help rid practitioners of everything from chronic pain to phobias to addictions. Because of tapping’s proven success in healing such a variety of problems, Ortner recommends to try it on any challenging issue. In The Tapping Solution, Ortner describes not only the history and science of tapping but also the practical applications. In a friendly voice, he lays out easy-to-use practices, diagrams, and worksheets that will teach readers, step-by-step, how to tap on a variety of issues. With chapters covering everything from the alleviation of pain to the encouragement of weight loss to fostering better relationships, Ortner opens readers’ eyes to just how powerful this practice can be. Throughout the book, readers will see real-life stories of healing ranging from easing the pain of fibromyalgia to overcoming a fear of flying. The simple strategies Ortner outlines will help readers release their fears and clear the limiting beliefs that hold them back from creating the life they want.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Welcome to Newtown, Connecticut, as seen through the eyes of its children. It is a place with a flagpole in the middle of Main Street, and two-dollar movies at the old town hall. It is a place of afternoon sports practice, dance and music lessons, Scout meetings and playdates, and weekends filled with baseball games, Sunday school and hikes in wooded parks. It is a place where the start of summer is marked by the reopening of the local ice cream stand, where autumn means apple-picking and hay mazes, and where winter brings historic homes alive with dazzling lights. It is a place of wonder, of joy, of belonging and of promise. Above all, it is home. On December 14, 2012, when that familiar place of comfort was shaken and in danger of being cruelly redefined, many of us felt compelled to do what we could to help the community heal. For Kristina Applegate, who grew up in another small town just 20 minutes away from Sandy Hook Elementary School, it meant bringing her book-making workshop home to Connecticut. For her former high school classmates and newly-recruited volunteers, it meant coming together to reassure our children that their special place still exists. This book began as a nine-day after school program held in Newtown during April of 2013. Each afternoon, 27 children ranging in age from 6 to 12-many of them students at Sandy Hook Elementary School, and nearly all of them from the greater community-arrived at the Newtown Youth Academy to write stories, create illustrations, and ultimately have their work published in this book. Yet they did far more than that. Through a lighthearted curriculum carefully designed for them by a professional art therapist and an experienced teacher, the kids explored what was most important to them, what brought them comfort and what they might change if they could. They discovered new talents within themselves, and they forged new relationships. They shared a bit of their lives...even if they didn't realize it. The narratives and illustrations in this book tell of time travel, of hidden treasures, of super powers and of a world in which all creatures are happy, well cared for and safe. They are imaginative and funny and unfiltered, just like the kids who created them. We are thrilled to help Connecticut's children share their work, just as their counterparts in Asia and Latin America have done during past Kids Share Workshops. Book Legendary Locals of Newtown

Download or read book Legendary Locals of Newtown written by Daniel Cruson and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2013 with total page 130 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since its inception in 1705, Newtown has been an agricultural community at heart. Small, self-sufficient, subsistence farms grew but not substantially enough to overcome competition from the South and Midwest. Men like Ezra Johnson continued to farm until the beginning of the 20th century; others turned to dairy farming, like Israel Nezvesky, or to wholesale nursery operations, like Charles Newman, or to viniculture, like Morgan McLaughlin. Industry made contributions to Newtown's economic landscape in the 19th century through the efforts of William Cole of the New York Belting and Packing Company and Samuel Curtis of Curtis Packaging. James Brunot, developer of Scrabble, and William Upham, inventor of the tea bag, continued to innovate and form Newtown's unique culture. Community commitment thrives today through people like Laurie McCollum, who continues her grandfather's tradition as manager of Lorenzo's Restaurant, and Diane Wardenburg, who carries on Ginny Lathrop's legacy by guiding the Lathrop School of Dance to serve a new generation of aspiring dancers.

Book excerpt: Newtown changed most dramatically in the period from 1900 to 1960, and Newtown: 1900-1960 captures these changes photographically to show how Newtown became the suburban town with a small-town atmosphere that it is today. The book includes an outstanding array of photographs from three recently discovered collections, including a series on the army maneuvers of 1912, which shows the state of the American army before World War I. Newtown: 1900-1960 begins with the village, which is truly the heart of the town. It focuses on institutions such as the Newtown Savings Bank, which was the business center for almost a century and a half. The book then examines the industrial section of town, Sandy Hook, with businesses that both sustained life and just made life more pleasant. In addition, the book looks at the outlying settlements of Stevenson, Hattertown, Hawleyville, and Riverside, a summer colony that became a year-round place.

It is a book that can be appreciated on several levels; by adults who know the horrific details of the events that took place on the cold December morning, as well as by children who read the book or have it read to them as a sad story with an uplifting ending that outlines the strength of the human spirit. The tale has an even wider application to other news stories that portray bad things happening to good people.
